Good API documentation lets a developer make one working request without hunting across scattered pages. Put the prerequisites, credential setup, complete request, expected response, and first troubleshooting steps in one focused quickstart; use the endpoint reference for the full contract and edge cases.

What a first-request quickstart should accomplish

A quickstart should take a reader from an empty terminal to a recognizable successful response. It is a task guide, not a substitute for the full API reference: it supplies the sequence and decisions a newcomer needs, while the reference documents the complete behavior of each operation.

Keep the example specific to the API being documented. Authentication schemes, endpoint paths, required inputs, SDK support, response shapes, errors, and limits differ by API; do not present one vendor’s implementation as a universal rule.

State prerequisites and credential setup first

Before the request, tell readers what they need and where to get it. Name the API base URL, whether an account or project is required, the credential type, and any SDK or command-line setup. If credentials must be created in a dashboard, identify the relevant account area or link to the API’s authoritative instructions rather than making readers guess.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Explain the authentication scheme and show exactly how the credential is sent, using a placeholder or environment variable rather than a real secret. For example, OpenAI’s API overview says API keys are secrets and should not be exposed in client-side code. Follow the documented API’s own guidance, and make clear that secret credentials belong in a trusted server-side environment—not browser-facing code where users can inspect them.

Show one complete, minimal request

Choose a small operation that demonstrates a useful outcome with as few unrelated options as possible. Include the HTTP method, full endpoint URL or base URL plus path, required headers, and every required query parameter or body field. State the example’s language and prerequisites. Avoid unexplained variables and ellipses that force the reader to infer what to send.

When the API supports both direct HTTP and an official SDK, offer both routes or clearly explain which one the quickstart uses. OpenAI’s API overview, for example, presents an official client library or direct HTTP as ways to get started and directs readers toward a first request. That is a useful pattern, not a requirement that every API provide both.

A request snippet should be runnable once the reader supplies their own credential. For an API-specific example, use the actual documented endpoint, fields, and authentication scheme; never substitute a plausible-looking endpoint or response that the service does not guarantee.

Show how to recognize success

Place a representative response beside the request. Label it as an example if values vary, and identify the success status and response fields the reader should check. Explain what the returned identifier or data means only to the extent established by the API’s documentation.

Then give one natural next step, such as a link to another operation or the full endpoint reference. OpenAI’s API overview describes its reference as the place to look up endpoints, schemas, client methods, authentication, errors, rate limits, and request IDs; a quickstart should make that deeper material easy to reach without front-loading it.

Put first-call troubleshooting next to the example

Readers should not have to leave the page to interpret the most likely initial failures. Tie each symptom to a concrete check or recovery action, using the API’s authoritative error definitions. For the OpenAI API, the error guidance distinguishes invalid authentication from rate limiting: check the key and organization for an authentication error; for rate limiting, pace requests and follow the Retry-After header when it is present.

  • Authentication failure: Confirm the credential is valid, belongs to the intended account or organization where relevant, and is being sent using the documented scheme.
  • Rate limit: Reduce request pace and honor a documented retry interval such as Retry-After when supplied.
  • Other failures: Link to the API’s error reference and explain how to use its status code, error body, or request ID if the service documents those details.

Do not imply that these remedies cover every API or every failure. The exact status codes, limits, and recovery behavior must come from that API’s reference.

Pair task-based guidance with a complete reference

The endpoint reference should give developers the operation’s method and path, parameters, headers, request and response schemas, authentication requirements, possible errors, and relevant limits. Keep the quickstart focused on completing one useful workflow, then link directly to the operations and concepts it depends on.

OpenAPI 3.0.4 is a formal format for describing an API, including its operations and schemas. A structured OpenAPI description can support a consistent reference, but it does not by itself explain the beginner’s sequence, prerequisites, or choices. Pair machine-readable contract information with task-based prose. Confirm that the OpenAPI version and features match the API and tooling in use.

Keep examples and reference aligned with the API

Treat request and response examples as artifacts that need review when endpoints, schemas, authentication, or SDK versions change. If examples can be executed or routinely verified, do so as part of maintenance; otherwise, check them against the shipped API and current authoritative reference. The goal is to prevent a quickstart from teaching a request that the API no longer accepts.

A July 23, 2026 Mintlify guide to API documentation recommends covering authentication, a focused quickstart, endpoint references, runnable samples, realistic responses, error handling, rate limits, edge cases, and a changelog. It also discusses generating documentation from OpenAPI and using Git reviews to keep documentation aligned with an API. These are practical editorial approaches, not a guarantee of any particular onboarding or support outcome.

Evaluate a quickstart by the work it removes

When reviewing documentation, assess whether a developer can move from the landing page to a successful call without assembling missing information. Check whether examples stay synchronized with the API, whether the languages and SDKs readers need are represented, and whether authentication and secret handling are unambiguous. Also check whether error and rate-limit guidance gives actionable recovery steps, and whether links to deeper reference are easy to find without overwhelming the first-request path.
