Visual testing for React apps means rendering a page or component in a browser, capturing its pixels, and comparing them with an approved baseline. Use Playwright Test for route and user-flow screenshots, or Storybook stories when you want to check individual component states. A difference is a prompt for review—not proof of a bug—because intended design changes also alter screenshots.

What visual testing catches—and what it does not

A visual test can reveal appearance changes such as shifted layouts, missing icons, unexpected colors, or text wrapping differences. It complements tests for behavior and interaction; it does not establish that a button works or that an application’s logic is correct. Storybook describes the purpose directly: “Visual tests catch bugs in UI appearance.” Storybook’s visual-testing documentation explains the story-based workflow.

Choose the test scope that matches the risk. Page screenshots cover a route as users see it, while component screenshots can isolate a control or state that appears in many places. A screenshot comparison reports a difference; a person must decide whether to accept an intentional update or investigate a regression.

Choose page tests or component tests

Approach Best fit What to account for
Playwright Test screenshot assertions Teams that already run browser tests, or need screenshots of full pages and flows with code-managed baselines. Your team manages snapshot files, consistent rendering environments, and review of visual diffs. Playwright screenshot assertions
Playwright component testing Teams that want browser-rendered checks of React components and can render them through a development server. It is a browser-driven component setup; check Playwright’s current component-testing guidance before adopting, since implementation details can change.
Storybook with Chromatic Teams already documenting component states as Storybook stories and wanting visual review centered on those stories. The workflow sends a Storybook build and snapshots to Chromatic’s cloud service. Review its current terms and whether that suits project requirements. Storybook visual testing and Chromatic’s Playwright overview
Percy Teams evaluating a hosted visual-testing service and a Storybook-oriented workflow. The available product overview is vendor-authored. Verify current capabilities, pricing, and workflow in the service’s current documentation before choosing. Percy

Compare options on test scope, local versus hosted operation, browser coverage, baseline ownership, CI and review integration, environment reproducibility, and current cost. Available documentation establishes workflows, not current service prices or plan limits, so check provider terms directly rather than assuming a particular quota or price.

Build a reliable visual-testing workflow

1. Select the states worth protecting

For page tests, list important routes and the states users can encounter: for example, empty, loaded, error, and interactive states. For components, make Storybook stories for the variants and states where a visual regression would matter. These are practical selection guidelines; neither a screenshot tool nor a story automatically determines which states are important.

2. Make rendering repeatable

Keep the browser, operating system, viewport, fonts, and test data consistent between baseline creation and later runs. Avoid capturing unstable content, or filter it out. Playwright warns that browser rendering may vary with the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Its screenshot assertions support a custom stylesheet for hiding or stabilizing volatile elements. See Playwright’s snapshot guidance.

Examples of content to stabilize or exclude include timestamps, rotating promotions, randomized avatars, and live counters. Prefer deterministic test data or a narrowly scoped stylesheet over ignoring large parts of a screenshot; broad exclusions can hide actual regressions.

3. Capture and compare with Playwright Test

After navigating to the intended React state, use toHaveScreenshot(). On first use, Playwright creates a reference screenshot; later runs compare the rendered page with that reference. The following test assumes the app is already running and reachable at the example local URL:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('home page matches its approved appearance', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('http://127.0.0.1:3000');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home-page.png');
});

Run the test with your existing Playwright Test command, such as npx playwright test. The first run records a baseline; subsequent runs compare against it. If you need to tolerate a small number of differing pixels, Playwright documents the maxDiffPixels option. Set thresholds deliberately: a permissive threshold can conceal meaningful changes. Options and baseline behavior are documented in Playwright’s screenshot assertion guide.

4. Review diffs before changing baselines

Inspect each meaningful difference against the intended UI change. Fix unintended changes in the app or test setup; accept an intentional design change only after review. Playwright documents --update-snapshots for updating references, and Storybook’s visual-testing workflow likewise separates accepting intended changes from fixing unintended ones. Do not automatically refresh snapshots just to make a failing build pass.

5. Run checks in CI and keep references reviewable

Run visual checks in the same pull-request workflow as code changes, and keep screenshot references under version control so reviewers can inspect baseline updates. Match the CI browser and rendering environment to the one used to establish baselines. If a different host or browser version is introduced, assess whether resulting differences reflect the UI or the environment before updating references.

Use Storybook stories for component states

When the main concern is a component rather than an entire route, create stories for the states that need protection—for example, a default button, a disabled button, and a validation-error field. Storybook’s documented visual-testing approach uses stories as renderable test cases and integrates with Chromatic for cloud-based checks and review. This is useful when stories already represent the component states your team cares about; it adds a hosted workflow whose terms and suitability should be reviewed.

Playwright component testing is another browser-rendered component option. Its setup differs from ordinary page screenshot assertions, so use the current official component-testing guide before designing around it: Playwright component testing. The documentation cited here does not establish a universal winner between component testing and stories; choose based on where your component states live and how your team wants to review changes.

Troubleshoot noisy or failing screenshot checks

  • Many pixels differ after a CI or browser update: check whether the host OS, browser version, headless mode, fonts, viewport, or other rendering conditions changed. Restore the baseline environment or deliberately review a new baseline.
  • Only timestamps, ads, or rotating content differ: make the test data deterministic or filter the volatile element with a narrowly scoped screenshot stylesheet. Avoid hiding broad regions that may contain regressions.
  • The first run creates a screenshot instead of passing against one: this is expected when no reference exists yet. Review the newly created baseline, then commit it so later runs can compare against it.
  • A change fails even though the design update was intentional: inspect the diff first, then update the snapshot using Playwright’s documented --update-snapshots workflow. Include the baseline change with the UI change for review.
  • A component test will not render in the chosen setup: confirm the React development server and component-testing configuration meet the current Playwright guidance; component testing is a distinct browser-driven setup, not just a page test with a different assertion.
  • A screenshot passes but a control is broken: add or retain behavior-focused tests. Pixel comparisons verify appearance, not interaction semantics or application logic.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need an on-demand screenshot rather than a committed visual-regression baseline, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. A single GET request returns an image or PDF; this cURL example saves a WebP capture of your React app’s public URL. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and setup.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://your-app.example -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Keep the purpose of a diff clear

Visual checks are most useful when the state is deliberate, the rendering environment is repeatable, and reviewers treat each difference as evidence to inspect. Keep behavior tests for behavior, review intended appearance changes before updating references, and choose page-, component-, or story-based checks to match the UI you need to protect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does visual testing replace React unit or interaction tests?

No. It checks rendered appearance; retain tests for application logic, accessibility, and user interactions.

Can a screenshot diff tell me whether a change is a bug?

No. It identifies a difference from the baseline. A reviewer must determine whether that difference is intended.
