Use Selenium WebDriver to put the application into a known state, then capture named checkpoints and compare them with approved visual baselines. Selenium drives the browser; a visual testing layer handles image comparison and review. Reliable results depend on repeatable page state, deliberate screenshot scope, and disciplined baseline approvals—not on accepting every changed image.

What Selenium does—and what visual testing adds

Selenium WebDriver automates browser actions such as opening a page, clicking controls, and entering data. Visual regression testing adds a second task: capturing the interface at chosen checkpoints, comparing each capture with an accepted baseline, and reviewing differences. Selenium’s documentation describes its browser automation components; the comparison and approval policy belongs to the visual testing layer and your team.

A screenshot is not a useful test merely because it was captured. The test needs a meaningful application state, a consistent capture scope, and a way to decide whether a difference is an intended design change, a defect, or capture noise.

Build a visual test workflow

  1. Choose meaningful checkpoints. Capture states users can see and that matter: a page after it has loaded, a menu or dialog after interaction, a validation error, an empty or loading state, or a responsive layout at a relevant viewport.
  2. Drive the state with WebDriver. Navigate and interact as the user would. Do not treat navigation completing as proof that the interface is ready for capture.
  3. Wait for the relevant UI condition. Use an explicit wait suited to the page—for example, wait until a target element is visible or a loading indicator disappears. Selenium’s wait documentation covers WebDriver waiting strategies. Avoid relying on an arbitrary sleep as the only readiness check.
  4. Capture a consistently named checkpoint. Use names that identify the page and state, such as checkout-validation-error. Keep names unique where the tool requires it; Percy’s Python Selenium integration documents a required snapshot name.
  5. Compare and review. Inspect changes against the approved baseline. Accept only understood, intended visual changes; investigate unexpected differences before updating the reference.
  6. Run in relevant environments. A browser and viewport combination is one rendering context, not proof that every browser renders identically. Selenium Grid can distribute browser tests across machines when broader coverage is needed.

Make captures repeatable

Visual tests become noisy when the page changes between runs for reasons unrelated to the code under test. Control the inputs that matter to your application: test data, user state, browser size, and the point at which capture occurs. Consider whether timestamps, rotating content, ads, maps, avatars, or other changing regions should be stabilized, tested as-is, or excluded narrowly.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Handle motion and volatile regions deliberately

Percy’s Selenium integration documents options including freezing animated images, injecting CSS for a capture, and ignoring selected regions. These are tool-specific controls, and package behavior or requirements can change. Use them to address a known source of nondeterminism, not to hide broad portions of the interface. An ignored region reduces what the test verifies; keep it small and document why it changes unpredictably.

Do not confuse waiting with stability

A wait can ensure that a specific interface condition has occurred; it cannot make inherently changing content deterministic. If the page is still showing rotating content or test data varies from run to run, identify and control that cause rather than extending a timeout blindly.

Choose viewport, element, or full-page screenshots

Decide what a checkpoint is meant to verify. A viewport capture focuses on what is visible in the browser window. An element or region capture can focus review on a component. A full-page capture covers more content, but it is not interchangeable with a viewport screenshot.

Full-page capture may involve scrolling or stitching. Sticky or floating elements can move as the page scrolls, which can create artifacts in a stitched image. Verify the behavior in the browser and capture tool you use rather than assuming all screenshot implementations work the same way. Applitools’ screenshot guidance illustrates this caveat, although that article dates to 2018; Percy’s current Python Selenium repository documents a full_page option for its flow.

Maintain trustworthy visual baselines

A baseline is an approved reference, not an oracle. The first capture may preserve a defect if it is accepted without review. Later differences may be intentional product changes, regressions, or noise from an unstable capture.

Use Selenium capabilities appropriate to the job

WebDriver and Grid

WebDriver is the browser-driving interface. Grid distributes browser tests across machines, which can help when tests need to run against multiple browser environments. Distribution does not remove the need to define which browsers, viewports, and application states matter.

WebDriver BiDi

Selenium describes WebDriver BiDi as a bidirectional protocol using a WebSocket connection to stream browser events, including network requests, console messages, and JavaScript errors. Selenium says BiDi support is still being implemented while aiming to maintain backwards compatibility. It can help with event-aware automation and diagnostics, but it is not a prerequisite for screenshot comparison; the documentation cited here does not establish a BiDi-specific screenshot workflow. See Selenium’s BiDi documentation.

Example implementations and tool-selection criteria

Two vendor examples document Selenium integrations. Applitools has a Java Selenium quickstart for Visual AI tests and result review; it requires an account and API key. Percy’s Python Selenium integration documents driver snapshots and capture options such as full-page screenshots, animation freezing, CSS injection, and ignored regions. These examples show possible integrations, not a neutral ranking or a pricing comparison.

Troubleshoot common visual-test failures

Symptom Likely cause What to do
Intermittent diffs in the same test The page is captured before the target state is ready, or dynamic content changes between runs. Wait for a UI-specific condition, stabilize test data and state, and identify changing content. Apply a narrow capture control only when the changing region is intentionally outside the check.
A large diff after a small change The viewport, page state, or capture scope may differ; alternatively, the change may have broader layout effects. Check the browser size, checkpoint, and screenshot type, then inspect the full difference before accepting a baseline.
Missing content in a full-page capture The capture implementation may not load or include all content as expected, especially content revealed by scrolling. Verify full-page behavior in the selected browser and tool. If the content is lazy-loaded, ensure the application has reached the state the test intends to capture.
Misplaced sticky or floating controls in a long screenshot Scrolling or stitching can capture a moving element in inconsistent positions. Compare against a viewport or targeted element capture if that better matches the assertion, or verify the tool’s full-page behavior for this page.
Snapshot creation fails or collides with another checkpoint A required name may be missing or duplicated. Give each snapshot a stable, unique name; Percy’s Python integration specifically documents a snapshot name requirement.
Tests pass locally but differ in another browser environment Rendering context or page state differs. Run the test in the browser environments that matter and inspect each baseline in its own context; do not infer cross-browser equivalence from one capture.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a standalone website screenshot rather than a Selenium-driven interaction flow, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. It accepts a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie banners and consent overlays, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of a page:

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo supports capture options including full-page and CSS-selector element captures, viewport and device presets, dark mode, retina scale, waits, custom CSS or JavaScript, and request blocking. It does not replace Selenium when a test must first click through an application or establish an authenticated UI state through browser interaction.

The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free.
