Use Python’s / operator to divide two numbers and get the ordinary quotient. For inputs that may vary, check that the second number is not zero before dividing.
Python program to divide two numbers
This example reads two values, converts them to floating-point numbers, checks for a zero divisor, and prints the quotient:
first = float(input("Enter the first number: "))
second = float(input("Enter the second number: "))
if second == 0:
print("Cannot divide by zero.")
else:
print("Quotient:", first / second)For example, entering 10 and then 2 displays Quotient: 5.0. Python’s ordinary division operator returns a floating-point result even when both operands are integers; the Python tutorial demonstrates this with 8 / 5, which produces 1.6.
Algorithm for dividing two numbers
- Read or assign the first number (the dividend).
- Read or assign the second number (the divisor).
- If the divisor is zero, report that division cannot be performed.
- Otherwise, divide the first number by the second using
/. - Display the quotient or return it from a function.

Use // only when flooring is what you want. It does not simply discard the fractional part: with negative values, -7 // 3 is -3, not -2. These results and the behavior of % and divmod() are documented in Python’s numeric type documentation.
Handle division by zero
Dividing by zero raises ZeroDivisionError for ordinary numeric division. The input program checks the divisor first so it can print a clear message instead of stopping with an exception. The behavior is described in Python’s arithmetic expression reference.

For reusable code, you can instead define how the function handles an invalid divisor. This version raises ValueError deliberately as its own validation policy:
def divide(a, b):
if b == 0:
raise ValueError("divisor cannot be zero")
return a / b
print(divide(10, 2)) # 5.0Floating-point precision and other number types
Python’s built-in float type uses binary floating-point representation, so many decimal fractions cannot be stored exactly. A displayed or calculated decimal result can therefore be an approximation; Python’s floating-point tutorial explains why. For a basic division exercise, / with integers or floats is usually the right choice.

- For decimal arithmetic with an explicit precision and rounding policy: use
decimal.Decimal. Construct values from strings when decimal input should not first pass through a binary float. See the Decimal documentation. - For exact rational values: use
fractions.Fraction, which can represent values such as one third as a fraction. See the Fraction documentation.
Calling round(result, 2) can round a displayed result, but it does not make earlier floating-point calculations exact. With Decimal, note a type-specific distinction: its // operator truncates toward zero, unlike built-in integer floor division, which floors toward minus infinity.
