For ordinary household use, put used adult diapers (briefs) and incontinence pads in household garbage, following your local waste authority’s rules. If practical, empty solid stool into the toilet, wrap or bag the product, close the bag, and place it in the designated garbage container. Never flush the brief, pad, liner, wipe, or other absorbent product. A closed, intact bin and shaded storage can help limit odor. If a health professional gives you separate instructions for infectious or treatment-related waste, follow those and your local clinical-waste process.

How to dispose of a used adult diaper

  1. Put on gloves if you are helping someone. Washington State caregiver guidance includes gloves during disposal and handwashing afterward: Washington State caregiver training manual.
  2. Empty solid stool into the toilet if practical. This can help with odor. Flush only the waste itself, never the absorbent product.
  3. Wrap the brief or pad, then place it in a closeable bag. A regular household bag is sufficient under the cited local guidance; specialty disposal bags are not established as necessary. Calgary, Toronto, York, and South African household guidance all support bagging or wrapping used products: Calgary incontinence product guidance, Toronto waste sorting guidance, York black-bin guidance, and South African household absorbent-waste guidance.
  4. Put the closed bag in the locally designated garbage container. Calgary, Toronto, and York list ordinary incontinence products in household garbage for their service areas. Check your own waste provider’s instructions because accepted routes and collection arrangements vary.
  5. Wash your hands. Washington State caregiver guidance advises handwashing after disposing of the bag.

Do not flush briefs, pads, liners, wipes, or similar absorbent products. Calgary warns that flushing sanitary products can harm drainage pipes and the environment: Calgary’s disposal instructions.

How to control odor between collections

  • Remove stool to the toilet when practical, then wrap the product tightly before bagging it.
  • Use a small closeable bag, or double-bag if needed to contain odor or leakage. Ordinary household bags are an option; there is no evidence here that a branded or scented disposal bag works better.
  • Keep the garbage bin closed, intact, and in good condition. If it is stored outdoors, keep it out of direct sunlight where practical.
  • Keep pets away from stored waste, and wash the bin after emptying it if needed.
  • If the room still smells after disposal, Washington State caregiver guidance says to deodorize the room as needed but does not endorse a particular product.

South African household guidance mentions cat litter, crystals, and bicarbonate of soda as general odor-removal suggestions. These are suggestions, not proven comparative treatments. South Gippsland Shire Council also recommends wrapping or tying products, closing the bin, and storing it in shade; its FAQ says a well-managed general-waste bin is not noticeably smellier over a two-week collection cycle. That is the council’s stated experience, not a controlled study: South Gippsland nappy and incontinence waste FAQ.

When household garbage may not be the right route

Ordinary used incontinence products do not automatically count as infectious clinical waste. York lists adult nappies and incontinence pads as suitable for household black-bin waste in its service area, while identifying certain infectious dressings and dialysis products as separate clinical waste: York black-bin guidance. Virginia’s regulation likewise excludes routine personal-hygiene waste unless a health professional determines it is capable of producing infectious disease: Virginia medical-waste regulation.

These are jurisdiction-specific examples, not a universal classification. If a clinician identifies waste as infectious, or gives instructions for waste connected with a particular treatment or condition, follow that advice and ask your local authority or waste provider how it must be collected. Do not assume that rules from another city or country apply where you live.

Check the local collection rules

Calgary, Toronto, and York provide examples of municipal guidance that routes used incontinence products to ordinary garbage after bagging. Collection details can still differ by area, so look up your municipality or waste provider’s current instructions for incontinence products, adult nappies, or absorbent hygiene products. If you are unsure whether a clinician-directed waste stream applies, ask the treating professional before placing it in household garbage.
