To detach Puppeteer while leaving Chrome running, call await browser.disconnect(). To shut down the browser Puppeteer launched, call await browser.close(). To clean up just one isolated browser context, call await context.close().
Choose the cleanup method that matches what should stay open
| What you want to dispose of | Call | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Puppeteer’s connection to the browser | await browser.disconnect() |
Puppeteer detaches; the browser process and its pages remain running. Puppeteer Browser.disconnect() API |
| The browser Puppeteer launched | await browser.close() |
The browser and all its associated pages close. Puppeteer Browser.close() API |
| One non-default browser context | await context.close() |
That context and its pages close; other contexts and the browser remain. The default context cannot be closed this way. Puppeteer BrowserContext.close() API |
These are different scopes of cleanup: a connection, the entire browser, or one isolated context. The Puppeteer browser-management guide also notes that disconnecting does not close pages, unlike closing the browser. Browser management guide
Use disconnect when Chrome should keep running
Call disconnect() when your script is finished using the browser for now but another process, later script, or operator should be able to use the still-running browser.

await browser.disconnect();
This drops Puppeteer’s connection; it does not terminate the browser process or close its pages. The method returns a promise, so await it before the surrounding task exits. The Browser API reference identifies this method in Puppeteer 25.10.0; check the documentation for the version installed in your project if its API differs. Browser.disconnect() API

Use close when the browser should stop
If your code launched the browser and owns its lifecycle, use close() when the work is complete and the browser and its pages should be shut down.
await browser.close();
Do not use this in place of a simple detach: it closes the browser and all associated pages. The Browser API reference identifies this method in Puppeteer 25.10.0. Browser.close() API

Close only an isolated context when possible
A browser context is useful when a task needs a separate session. Closing that context removes its pages without shutting down the whole browser.
const context = await browser.createBrowserContext();
const page = await context.newPage();
// Use page for the task.
await context.close();
Do not call close() on the default browser context; Puppeteer documents that it cannot be closed. BrowserContext.close() API

Disconnect now and reconnect later
Save the browser’s WebSocket endpoint before detaching. A later Puppeteer connection can use that endpoint; close the browser when its owner is ready to stop it.
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const browserWSEndpoint = browser.wsEndpoint();
await browser.disconnect();
const browser2 = await puppeteer.connect({ browserWSEndpoint });
await browser2.close();
This follows Puppeteer’s documented Browser API example. It demonstrates that a later connection is possible; reconnecting is not a prerequisite for closing a browser. Puppeteer Browser API

What about Connection.dispose()?
Puppeteer’s lower-level Connection.dispose() method is documented as synchronous and returns void. Its reference does not establish it as the normal application-level way to clean up a browser. For application code, choose the Browser lifecycle method—disconnect() or close()—that matches whether the browser must remain alive. The Connection reference identifies version 25.3.0. Connection.dispose() API
Common cleanup mistakes and fixes
- The browser disappears when you only wanted to detach: use
browser.disconnect(), notbrowser.close(). - Chrome stays running after the script: disconnecting leaves the process running by design. If your script owns the browser and should stop it, use
browser.close(). - Closing one task’s pages shuts down other work: if the task used a separate context, close that context with
context.close()rather than closing the browser. - You cannot close the default context: Puppeteer does not allow it. Create a separate context for work that needs independently scoped cleanup.
- You are unsure which method exists in your installed version: check the API documentation matching your Puppeteer version. The cited references identify different versions, and the browser-management guide is labeled Next.
Or skip the browser setup
If the goal is a website screenshot rather than managing a local Puppeteer browser, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF with one GET request. For example, this cURL call saves a WebP shot of Stripe; replace the URL and set your API key:
