Keep a swollen or damaged lithium-ion battery out of household trash and curbside recycling. If you think it may catch fire imminently, call 911. Otherwise, contact the battery or device manufacturer and your local household hazardous-waste program for instructions on safe interim storage and an accepted handoff. The right destination depends on where you live and whether a site accepts damaged batteries.
First, check whether the battery may be damaged
Swelling is a sign of damage and a potential fire hazard. Other warning signs identified by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) include casing discoloration, an unusual smell or corrosion, loose or damaged wires, and known misuse.
If you see these signs, treat the battery as damaged rather than as an ordinary battery ready for routine recycling. Do not pry open a device to get at a battery that is embedded or not designed to be removed by the user.
What to do, based on the immediate risk
If a fire seems imminent
Do not spend time looking for a recycler or trying to arrange a drop-off. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says: “If you think you have an imminent risk of fire, you may need to call 911.” Follow emergency responders’ directions.

If there is no apparent imminent threat
- Keep it out of the waste stream. Do not put the battery—or a device containing it—in household garbage or a curbside recycling bin.
- Contact the manufacturer or retailer. Explain that the battery is swollen, damaged, or possibly defective, and ask for specific handling and disposal instructions.
- Contact your local household hazardous-waste program or state waste agency. Describe the battery’s condition and ask which location, if any, will accept it and how they want it brought in.
- Keep it in a safe place while you wait. Follow the instructions you receive; do not travel with the battery until the receiving program or manufacturer has explained whether and how to hand it over.
Why trash and curbside recycling are unsafe choices
Municipal recycling facilities are generally designed to process materials such as paper, plastic, metal, and glass—not batteries. A lithium-ion battery that enters the waste or recycling stream can be crushed or damaged during collection or sorting, creating a fire hazard. A recycling symbol or the fact that a battery contains recoverable materials does not mean it belongs in a curbside bin.
Specialized battery collection and processing are different from municipal curbside recycling. For a damaged battery, however, do not assume a standard battery collection box is suitable: confirm that the specific program accepts damaged batteries before going there.

How to store it while you arrange a handoff
Keep the battery or device away from flammable materials and in a location that is safe while you wait for instructions. EPA gives a bucket containing a fire suppressant such as sand or kitty litter as an example of an interim storage location. This is an example, not a certified container specification; it does not make the battery safe to touch or transport and does not authorize a particular disposal method.
Do not improvise repair or preparation steps. In particular, do not disassemble, puncture, or deliberately discharge a damaged battery, and do not assume that ordinary advice for end-of-life batteries—such as taping terminals or placing a battery in a bag—applies to a damaged one. Ask the manufacturer or local program what, if anything, they want you to do before handoff.

Why you should not mail or ship it on your own
Transporting damaged, defective, or recalled lithium batteries is subject to specialized hazardous-materials rules. PHMSA’s May 2022 advisory says those batteries may be transported only by highway, rail, or vessel—not by commercial aircraft—and describes special packaging and marking requirements. That regulatory guidance is not a do-it-yourself shipping recipe. Do not put a damaged battery in the mail or hand it to a consumer shipping service unless a qualified shipper or the receiving program gives you specific instructions under current rules.

There is no single drop-off destination that can be recommended for every U.S. household. State and local waste rules can be stricter than federal requirements, and individual programs and retailers may differ in whether they accept damaged batteries. Call before you travel, clearly describe the battery’s condition, and confirm the handoff process. For a battery embedded in a phone, laptop, or other device—or a medium or large battery system—contact the manufacturer, dealer, or installer rather than trying to remove it yourself.
