To show the current sermon title, update the YouTube live broadcast’s title in Live Control Room, add a separate text overlay in your streaming software if you want the title visible over the video, or do both. These are separate jobs: changing YouTube metadata does not add text to the picture, and an on-screen overlay does not automatically change the title on YouTube’s watch page.

Choose where the sermon title should appear

What viewers see How to update it What it does not do
YouTube watch-page title and YouTube surfaces Edit the live broadcast’s metadata in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. It does not put a title graphic over the video.
Text over the video itself Add a text or browser source to the active scene in OBS, or use another graphics system. It does not necessarily change the YouTube watch-page title.

If the congregation or online viewers need to see the sermon name while watching, use an on-video overlay. If you also want the title to be clear around the player and in YouTube listings, update the broadcast metadata as well.

Update the YouTube watch-page title

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and identify the scheduled or current broadcast. Confirm that you have an account role that can edit it.
  2. Open the broadcast’s stream settings or metadata controls and edit its title. YouTube documents editing metadata while creating a stream, from the stream settings page, or while scheduling.
  3. Enter the current sermon title, along with any service or church identification your viewers need.
  4. Check the selected broadcast and its preview before the service. If you reuse a previous stream, inspect the copied title and other settings: YouTube says reusing a stream copies metadata, settings, and the stream key, and the new stream can be edited after creation.

Churches that describe their channel as “always-on” may either keep one broadcast running continuously or schedule a new broadcast for each service. Identify which setup you are editing before changing metadata; the same workflow should not be assumed for every channel.

Put the title on screen in OBS

OBS can render text in a scene, including text read from a file, and can display web content through a browser source. A text overlay is useful when viewers should see the sermon name over the video rather than only around the YouTube player.

Use a text source for a simple title

  1. In OBS, select the scene used for the church broadcast and add a text source. Place it where the title should appear, such as a lower-third area.
  2. For a one-time update, edit the source text and enter the sermon title before the service.
  3. To make weekly changes easier, enable the text source’s “Read from file” option. Edit the plain text file when the sermon title changes; OBS reads the displayed text from that file.
  4. Inspect the active scene and the YouTube preview. Check the spelling, contrast, placement, and legibility on a phone-sized screen, and keep the text clear of important picture content and player controls.

Use a browser source for a designed graphic

  1. Add a browser source to the OBS scene and point it to the local HTML graphic or URL that provides the overlay.
  2. Make sure the person or team responsible for the overlay updates the sermon title before the broadcast. A browser source displays the supplied web content; it does not know the current sermon title unless that content is updated or connected to an update system.
  3. Preview the scene and the YouTube feed to confirm the graphic is visible and current.

OBS documents these capabilities in its Text Sources, Sources Guide, and Browser Source documentation.

Automate updates to YouTube’s title with the API

A developer-maintained integration can update broadcast metadata using Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API operation liveBroadcasts.update, which can set snippet.title. This is a metadata update, not an overlay-rendering feature.

The API requires OAuth authorization and a correctly maintained broadcast resource. Google warns that writable properties omitted from an update can be deleted, so an integration should identify the intended live broadcast and preserve the required and current fields instead of sending a partial resource copied from an example without checking its effects. Recheck Google’s API reference when implementing the integration.

Keep the always-on setup safe and ready

  • Identify the right broadcast: Confirm whether the service is a scheduled broadcast or an already-live broadcast before editing it.
  • Protect the stream key: YouTube describes stream keys as similar to a password and address for the stream. Treat the key as sensitive; do not put it in an overlay or public document. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
  • Check copied settings: Reused streams can carry forward their prior metadata, settings, and stream key. Verify the sermon title before going live.
  • Preview and monitor: YouTube recommends previewing in Live Control Room and monitoring the stream’s audio and video quality. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
  • Use RTMPS when appropriate: If your encoder setup uses RTMPS, retrieve the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and use an encoder that supports it. YouTube defines RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL; see YouTube’s streaming protocol information.

Where the title appears YouTube metadata only YouTube metadata plus an OBS overlay Use an overlay if viewers need the sermon title over the picture.
How the overlay changes Type into an OBS text source Read from a maintained text file or show a browser overlay Match the method to who will own weekly updates.
How YouTube’s title changes Edit the broadcast in Live Control Room Use a developer-maintained Live Streaming API integration Automation is most useful when the team can maintain and safely authorize it.

Troubleshoot a title that is missing or outdated

  • The YouTube page has the old title: Check that you edited the correct scheduled or current broadcast, then inspect reused-stream metadata and confirm the change in the Live Control Room or watch-page preview.
  • The overlay is missing: Confirm that the text or browser source is in the scene currently being sent to YouTube, and check its visibility and placement in OBS.
  • The overlay has last week’s title: If using a text file, verify that OBS is reading the file you edited. If using a browser source, update the HTML or web content that it displays.
  • The API title update affects other metadata: Review the update resource and the API’s field requirements. A writable property omitted from an update can be deleted; correct the integration before using it on a live broadcast.
  • The preview is not the expected feed: Reconfirm the selected broadcast and encoder destination in Live Control Room. For RTMPS, use the URL provided there and an encoder that supports the protocol.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping on a YouTube channel from the cloud. For an always-on recorded service or other pre-recorded church content, upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed; you still need to update YouTube metadata or prepare an overlay separately if the sermon title must change.
