For Tamil subtitles that every viewer can see in an OBS YouTube stream, render the subtitles into the video image before adding the video to OBS. If your video already contains an embedded Tamil subtitle track, OBS’s VLC Video source may display it when you enable and select that track. Uploading an SRT file to YouTube Studio is a separate option for selectable captions on a regular YouTube video; it does not guarantee captions will appear in OBS’s live output.
Choose how you want subtitles to appear
| Approach | Part of the OBS stream image? | Viewer can toggle it? | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Render (burn) subtitles into a video copy | Yes | No | Predictable visible text for everyone watching the stream |
| Use an embedded track with OBS VLC Video | Intended to display the selected track; verify with your file | No separate viewer toggle for the OBS composite | A video that already contains a compatible Tamil subtitle track |
| Upload a subtitle file in YouTube Studio | Not established as part of OBS live output | YouTube captions are viewer-selectable | Adding captions to a regular uploaded YouTube video |
For the first approach, the Tamil text is part of the pixels in the video, so viewers cannot switch it off or choose another language. For a selectable caption track on a normal YouTube upload, use YouTube Studio instead.
Option 1: Render Tamil subtitles into the video before OBS
This is the safest workflow when your goal is for Tamil text to be visible in the live program. Use a video editor that can import your subtitle text or timed subtitle file and render it onto the picture. Export a new video, then play that version in OBS.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check the subtitle timing and Tamil text. Confirm each line matches the spoken content and appears for the intended duration. Review spelling, punctuation, and line breaks.
- Render the subtitles onto a copy of the video. Keep the original unchanged so you can correct translations or timing later. Choose text size, position, and contrast that remain legible against the image.
- Check screen-safe placement. Keep text away from the edges and from important on-screen content. Preview scenes with both bright and dark backgrounds.
- Add the rendered copy to OBS. In the Sources dock, select + → Media Source, create a source, and choose the rendered file in its properties. The Media Source documentation covers local file selection and playback controls, including looping; it does not document a separate external subtitle-file selector (OBS Media Sources).
- Test the complete scene. Record a short sample in OBS and review it at normal playback size. Confirm Tamil glyphs render, timing is right, and text is not cropped before starting the stream.
Option 2: Display an embedded subtitle track with VLC Video
If the video already has a Tamil subtitle track inside the media file, OBS’s VLC Video source provides controls for enabling subtitles and selecting a track. Whether a particular file works depends on its container, subtitle format, and text rendering, so verify the exact file rather than assuming compatibility.

- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. The OBS guide specifies that VLC and OBS bitness must match; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Add the VLC source. In OBS, use the Sources dock’s + menu and choose VLC Video Source. Select the media file or configure the playlist in the source properties.
- Enable and select subtitles. Turn on Subtitles Enabled, then choose the intended entry under Subtitle Track. The exact controls and source behavior are described in the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Inspect a test recording. Check that the Tamil characters display correctly, the right track is selected, and the subtitles stay in sync. If the track is missing or the text is broken, use a rendered copy instead.
OBS’s documented Media Source properties do not show how to load an external .srt sidecar directly. Do not assume that placing an SRT file next to a video will make Media Source display it.
Option 3: Add selectable Tamil captions in YouTube Studio
YouTube Studio can add subtitles to a video through an uploaded file, auto-sync, or manual entry. This is useful for a regular YouTube video whose viewers should be able to turn captions on or off. It is not evidence that the captions will be composited into an OBS live stream.

- Open YouTube Studio and select the uploaded video.
- Open Subtitles and choose the option to add a language; select Tamil.
- Upload a timed subtitle file, use auto-sync, or enter captions manually. YouTube lists SubRip (.srt) as a basic supported format when the file uses plain UTF-8. See YouTube’s supported subtitle and caption files.
- Review the timing and text, then publish the subtitle track. Check the video’s caption controls to confirm the track is available.
YouTube says subtitles and captions can help reach deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers and people who speak another language (Add subtitles and captions). This Studio workflow creates captions associated with the uploaded video; it should not be treated as a live OBS overlay.

YouTube lists Tamil among the languages supported for automatic captions on long-form videos, but its help page says live automatic captions are English-only. Automatic captions can also misrecognize speech because of pronunciation, accent, dialect, or background noise; review generated text rather than relying on it as a translation or definitive transcript. YouTube documents a separate live-caption workflow: captions must either be embedded in the video as 608/708 captions or sent through supported caption software over HTTP POST (YouTube live caption requirements). A subtitle file uploaded to Studio is not the same as sending captions through that live-caption path.
Troubleshooting Tamil subtitles in OBS
- No subtitle appears with Media Source: Media Source’s documented properties do not include an external subtitle-file selector. Render the subtitles into a video copy, or try VLC Video with a compatible embedded track.
- The VLC subtitle track is absent: Confirm the source file actually contains an embedded track and that VLC can read the file. If OBS cannot expose the track, render subtitles into the picture before adding the video.
- Subtitles are enabled but Tamil text is missing or garbled: Check the selected track and inspect the same file in an OBS preview and recording. Tamil glyph rendering can vary with the media, subtitle format, and system setup; the documentation does not guarantee font fallback for every system. A rendered video copy avoids depending on OBS to draw the subtitle text during playback.
- Text appears too early, too late, or on the wrong lines: Check subtitle timing and encoding in the source file or editing workflow, then make a new test recording. Do not correct timing while live.
- Text is clipped or hard to read: Adjust its position, line breaks, size, and contrast in the editor, export again, and inspect it in the OBS scene at the size viewers will see.
- The YouTube video has captions but the live stream does not: Studio captions for an uploaded video and captions in an OBS live program are separate workflows. Use subtitles rendered into the video, a verified embedded VLC track, or YouTube’s documented live-caption method.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the video and subtitles are ready but you do not want a computer or home connection to stay on for a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload the rendered video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not stream from a camera; it plays uploaded videos to YouTube.
