To show a WordPress post date as “5 minutes ago,” pass its Unix timestamp to PHP’s human_time_diff(), then add and translate the “%s ago” wording yourself. For block-editor JavaScript, use the @wordpress/date package. Relative labels work well for recent items; an absolute date and time can preserve useful calendar context for older ones.
Show a relative date in a PHP theme or plugin
human_time_diff() returns a duration such as “5 minutes,” not a complete sentence. Supply the timestamp and wrap the result in a translatable phrase, escaping the final text for HTML output:

?>Here, get_post_time( 'U', true ) requests the post’s Unix timestamp in GMT. WordPress documents human_time_diff() as accepting Unix timestamps; its second argument defaults to the current server time. Check the timestamp helper and timezone assumptions in your particular code path, especially if you are working with a timestamp from another source. See the WordPress human_time_diff() reference.
The wrapper is translatable, and WordPress’s duration strings can use their own singular and plural translations. Replace your-text-domain with your theme or plugin’s text domain. Escape according to the output context; this example is for HTML text.

What the result means
The function calculates an absolute difference between the supplied timestamps and selects a rounded unit: seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months or years. Its duration alone does not say whether the timestamp is in the past or future. If future dates are possible in your interface, handle the direction separately rather than always appending “ago.”
Use JavaScript in block-editor interfaces
For editor-side scripts, WordPress provides date helpers through @wordpress/date. Its humanTimeDiff() function produces a human-readable time difference, while dateI18n() formats dates in a localized way similar to PHP’s wp_date(). The package documentation describes date inputs in the WordPress timezone. Check the expected input type for the value you pass: JavaScript dates, strings and numbers are not interchangeable with PHP Unix timestamps without conversion. Pair relative labels with localized absolute dates when useful
“5 minutes ago” is quick to scan, but it does not show a calendar date or exact time. A practical display policy is to use relative wording for recent entries and switch to a localized absolute date and time for older ones, or provide both when readers need precision. This is a usability choice, not a WordPress requirement.
WordPress core offers one example in its privacy-request admin table: it displays a translated relative time for timestamps less than one day old, and a date and time otherwise. That is an example of core behavior rather than a rule for every site. See the WP_Privacy_Requests_Table reference.

Format an absolute date with wp_date()
For localized absolute dates, use wp_date( $format, $unix_timestamp ). It accepts a true Unix timestamp and defaults to the WordPress site timezone. Choose a format appropriate to your display, for example:

Why not treat date_i18n() as a drop-in formatter?
date_i18n() has legacy timestamp-with-offset semantics: its timestamp argument is described as a Unix timestamp plus a timezone offset. Do not pass a normal Unix timestamp to it under the assumption it behaves like wp_date(). For new absolute-date formatting, use wp_date(); consult the date_i18n() reference when maintaining older code.
