For a quick manual check, open Plugins in the WordPress dashboard to inspect installed plugins, or go to Appearance > Themes for theme details, activation, and live preview. To display the same information in custom PHP, use get_plugins() for installed plugin metadata, wp_get_theme() for one theme, and wp_get_themes() to enumerate themes. Use themes_api() only when you need information from the WordPress.org theme directory.
Check plugin and theme information in the dashboard
Plugins
In the WordPress administration area, open Plugins. This is the simplest way for an administrator to inspect installed plugins without writing code.
Themes
Open Appearance > Themes to see installed themes. Select a theme to view its details; the screen also provides actions such as Activate and Live Preview, and may link to the theme’s WordPress.org details. These screens are intended for people managing the site, not for automatically publishing information on a public page.
Display installed plugin information with PHP
get_plugins() scans the plugins directory and returns plugin records keyed by plugin file name. The records include header information such as name, URI, version, description, author, text domain, and network status. The function returns data; it does not create or style a public-facing page for you.

When calling it from front-end code, load the admin plugin functions file if the function is not already available. For example:

?>Escape values with esc_html() when inserting them into public HTML. The function’s first results are cached; WordPress Developer Resources recommends calling it at least after the after_setup_theme action so plugins can filter the results.

Show the active theme or another specific theme
Use wp_get_theme() when you need one theme, such as the active theme. It returns a WP_Theme object whose fields can be read with get():

?>To retrieve a particular installed theme instead, pass its stylesheet directory name to wp_get_theme( $stylesheet ). Keep escaping values before printing them, just as you would for plugin information.

List all installed themes
Use wp_get_themes() when you actually need a collection. It returns an array of WP_Theme objects and accepts errors, allowed, and blog_id arguments. Those options are relevant when including themes with errors or filtering themes in multisite. For example, the basic enumeration pattern is:

?>Enumerating themes is more work than retrieving one: WordPress documents that wp_get_themes() is expensive and its cost grows linearly with the number of themes. Prefer wp_get_theme() when you only need the active theme or one known theme. Do not use get_themes() in new code; it has been deprecated since WordPress 3.4.0 in favor of wp_get_themes().

Distinguish installed data from WordPress.org directory data
get_plugins(), wp_get_theme(), and wp_get_themes() describe items installed locally. If you need theme-directory information instead—for example, to search themes or retrieve information by slug—use themes_api(). Its supported actions include query_themes and theme_information, with arguments such as slug, search, author, tag, locale, and fields. Label directory results separately from locally installed theme details so visitors do not mistake a directory listing for software installed on their site.

Keep public output safe and appropriately scoped
Only publish plugin or theme inventories if visitors need them. For a public display, escape metadata at the point it is printed; the examples use esc_html() for text in HTML. A dashboard screen is usually more suitable when the information is only for administrators. On multisite, select the relevant site context and use the available allowed and blog_id options when enumerating themes, rather than assuming every theme applies to every site.
