To display a password-protected PDF in a web application, use a browser-side viewer such as Mozilla PDF.js or Adobe PDF Embed API, then provide the document through a URL or bytes and handle the password prompt without confusing permission to view with permission to edit. For PDFs hosted on another domain, configure CORS or fetch the file through your application’s proxy. Which approach fits best depends on how much viewer control you need and how you want to manage document access and storage.
Choose a viewer: PDF.js or Adobe PDF Embed API
Both options provide a JavaScript-based way to display PDFs in a web application, but they differ in integration and data handling.

PDF.js is a practical choice when you want control over the rendering stack and can manage delivery and compatibility. Its three layers are Core, which parses and interprets PDF data; Display, which provides rendering and document-information APIs; and Viewer, which supplies the user interface. Mozilla’s guide listed stable version 6.4.299 on October 4, 2026; that is a version observed on that date, not a permanent recommendation. Mozilla PDF.js getting started
Adobe PDF Embed API is an alternative if you want an integrated viewer. Adobe documents its core functionality as running in a sandboxed HTML iframe, which limits access across the iframe boundary. Its security documentation describes the API as client-side JavaScript and WebAssembly and says the viewer does not manage customer PDF storage. Adobe PDF Embed API security

Understand the two PDF password types
A PDF’s password prompt does not always mean the same thing. Adobe distinguishes a document open password, also called a user password, from a permissions password, also called an owner password. Adobe: Secure PDFs with passwords
- Open password: The person opening the PDF must enter the password.
- Permissions password: Protects settings that may restrict printing, editing, or copying. A permissions-only password does not necessarily prevent someone from opening or viewing the document.
A PDF secured with both types can be opened with either password, but Adobe says only the permissions password allows restricted features to be changed. Design your application’s prompt and access flow around the action being requested: opening for viewing is not the same as changing document restrictions. Request only passwords the user is authorized to provide.

Load a PDF with PDF.js
PDF.js can load a document from a URL or from raw bytes. When working with bytes, Mozilla recommends a Uint8Array rather than converting the file to base64, because base64 conversion uses more memory. If you provide a document URL in the viewer’s query string, encode it with encodeURIComponent(). Mozilla PDF.js FAQ
A URL-based request must also be permitted by the browser’s origin security rules. Mozilla explains that PDF.js runs with the same permissions as other JavaScript code and cannot make cross-origin requests by default. Configure the PDF server to allow the requesting origin with CORS, or have your application retrieve and serve the document through a proxy. The generic/demo viewer also blocks this behavior on deployments outside mozilla.github.io to reduce content-spoofing risk; do not treat that demo restriction as a substitute for configuring your own application. For large PDFs, PDF.js may use HTTP Range Requests to retrieve portions needed for visible pages. This depends on browser support and the server’s range-request headers, so partial loading is not guaranteed in every deployment. Plan password handling and processing carefully
When a PDF requires an open password, your application needs an authorized user to supply it to the viewer that opens the document. Do not treat a permissions password as though it were required merely to view every restricted PDF, or imply that a viewer can legitimately remove restrictions without authorization.

Adobe states that PDF files secured to require a password to open cannot be processed by PDF Services API. Its documentation describes Remove Protection for cases where the password is known and the PDF author has authorized removal. That is not a method for bypassing an unknown password. Keep authorization in your application’s delivery path: a viewer does not replace your controls over who may retrieve a document. Adobe says its Embed API does not manage PDF storage, so access and storage controls remain with the integrating website or browser. Do not conflate the Embed viewer with Adobe’s PDF Services workflows. Those service APIs process uploaded or externally stored documents; Adobe documents 24-hour default retention for uploaded or generated assets in the described workflows and supports signed URLs for certain external storage providers. Adobe also states that content in transit for Acrobat Services is encrypted using TLS 1.2 or greater.
