In OBS, playlist playback and the on-screen title are separate jobs: use a VLC Video source to play the playlist, then add a Text source above it to display Hindi text. Choose a font that covers Devanagari, load the title from a UTF-8 text file, and check the actual characters in the OBS preview. The Text source does not automatically follow the current VLC playlist item in the documented workflow, so you must update its text separately or supply your own synchronization method.
Set up the playlist and a separate title source
- Add the playlist. In the OBS Sources dock, select + and choose VLC Video. VLC must be installed for this source to appear. Add your video files to its playlist, then configure the available playback options, such as loop or shuffle, as needed. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Create a title file. Make a plain-text file containing the Hindi title you want displayed. Save it as UTF-8 as a practical starting point. A legacy OBS help guide lists UTF-8 and UTF-16 for FreeType 2 text input and UTF-8 for GDI+ text input, but use the controls and behavior in your installed OBS version in preference to that older guidance: legacy OBS Studio help guide.
- Add the title. In the Sources dock, select + and add a Text source. Enable its option to read from a file and select the title file. OBS documents font selection and text appearance controls; the exact available options can depend on the text-source implementation. See the OBS Text Sources guide.
- Choose and verify a Devanagari-capable font. Select a font, then inspect the title in the OBS preview. The font picker does not certify that a font contains Hindi glyphs or renders every title correctly. Check the actual characters, including vowel marks and joined forms, rather than assuming a readable file will render properly.
- Put the title over the video and make it readable. Move the Text source above VLC Video in the Sources list; higher sources appear above lower ones. Resize and position it in the preview. Where available, adjust alignment, outline, background opacity, and wrapping or text extents to suit the title and keep it legible. The OBS Sources Guide explains source ordering and preview positioning.
Keep the displayed title in sync with the playlist
The documented VLC Video source supports playlist playback, but its guide does not describe sending the current filename or title to an OBS Text source. Treat the title as separately supplied: when the playlist advances, update the text file or text source yourself unless you have a tested external tool or custom overlay that handles synchronization. A static title file will not automatically change just because VLC starts the next video.
A Browser Source can load a custom web overlay and offers more layout flexibility, including local HTML and CSS, on Windows, macOS, and Linux. But the page still needs a way to receive or determine the current title; the OBS Browser Source guide does not document a feed from the VLC playlist.
Why a playlist metadata plugin may not solve video titles
The OBS forum listing for NowPlaylisting describes a Windows-only plugin that requires OBS Studio 30.0.0 or later and extracts artist and title metadata on Windows for audio. Its listing says video is played without a metadata text overlay, so it is not a documented solution for showing the current video title. The listing reports an update on March 20, 2026; plugin compatibility and behavior can change.
