To show a radio schedule on a YouTube livestream, add it as a text or graphic overlay in the encoder that produces your video. Scheduling the event in YouTube Studio can promote it and let viewers set reminders, but it does not put the lineup on screen. You can use a fixed graphic or text for a stable schedule, or build a data-fed overlay if your scheduling system and encoder support it.
What appears on the livestream screen?
Your encoder sends the video viewers see, including any graphics layered over it. YouTube Studio’s scheduled event is separate: its title, description, thumbnail and start time describe and promote the event, but do not render a radio lineup into the video. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers overlays and graphics as part of encoder-based production.
OBS is one encoder option listed by YouTube. The OBS Project describes OBS as free and open source, with no watermark or usage limitations, and says it may be used commercially. Its Help Portal also explains how dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection to the streaming service or a connection that cannot sustain the selected bitrate.
Choose what viewers need to see
Pick a display that remains readable at the size people will actually watch. A whole weekly lineup can be useful, but compressing it into a corner often makes the text too small. A compact “On now / Up next” panel is usually a clearer starting point; a short rotating panel can show more programs without keeping a dense schedule on screen.

- Information: Show the full day or week, or focus on the current and next shows.
- Update method: Use a fixed graphic, manually edited text, or an externally data-fed overlay.
- Visibility: Keep the panel always visible, show it between programs, or switch it with scenes.
- Format: A compact panel is quick to scan; a ticker fits more text, but moving text may be harder to read. Check the actual playback rather than assuming it works.
- Time zone: Label the station’s time zone, especially if viewers are spread across regions.
- Screen space: Check that the schedule does not cover important parts of the radio visual and has enough contrast against the background.
How do I add a schedule overlay in OBS?
The specific menu labels can vary by OBS version. YouTube’s guidance confirms that encoder streams can include graphics, but does not establish a current click-by-click OBS text-source procedure. Use the following workflow to add the schedule to the composition you send to YouTube.
- Prepare the schedule. Decide whether to show the whole lineup or only “On now / Up next.” Include a clear time zone and confirm the listed hours match the station’s published schedule.
- Create the visual. Make a graphic asset or enter text using the graphics and text options in your encoder. For a static schedule, update the artwork or text whenever the lineup changes.
- Add it to the encoder composition. In OBS or another graphics-capable encoder, place the schedule above the radio image or video in the scene. Position it within the visible frame and avoid covering important content.
- Check the preview at viewing size. Play the actual background image or video, then inspect the encoder preview. Confirm the text is legible on a phone-sized player, has adequate contrast, and is not clipped at the frame edges.
- Check YouTube’s preview. Connect the encoder and inspect the Live Control Room preview before going live. Verify the schedule appears as intended in the outgoing video.
Can my livestream schedule update automatically?
Yes, if your production setup can render an overlay from a reliable schedule-data source. The general overlay capability does not mean YouTube Studio automatically turns a radio station’s program schedule into on-screen graphics; YouTube’s encoder guidance does not document a native radio scheduling integration.

Before relying on an automatic overlay, confirm that the station’s scheduling system can provide current data and that the overlay can read it. Check time-zone handling, how quickly changes appear, and what happens if the data source is unavailable. If the setup cannot supply and render dependable data, use a manually updated graphic or text instead.
Schedule the YouTube event separately
Once the overlay is ready, schedule the YouTube event if you want to promote the stream or let viewers set reminders. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to open Live Control Room, select Manage, then choose SCHEDULE STREAM. Scheduling gives you an event URL to share and can offer viewers reminders; it does not replace the encoder overlay.

- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, select Manage, and choose SCHEDULE STREAM.
- Enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in your encoder, as directed by YouTube. Keep the stream key private.
- Start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check that the schedule graphic is visible and correctly placed.
- When the preview is ready, click Go live in Live Control Room for the scheduled stream.
If the channel has never streamed live before, YouTube says initial live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, so set it up ahead of the planned broadcast. YouTube also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Common schedule-overlay problems
- The schedule does not appear in the YouTube preview: It may be absent from the active encoder scene or layered behind another visual. Check the encoder composition, then inspect the Live Control Room preview before going live.
- The text looks tiny or is hard to read: Reduce the amount of information, increase the text size or contrast, and check the result at phone-player size.
- The schedule shows the wrong time: Make the station’s time zone explicit and compare the displayed hours with the published lineup. For an automatic overlay, verify the source’s time-zone behavior.
- The lineup changes but the display does not: A static graphic or manually entered text will not update itself. Replace it before the broadcast, or configure and test a data-fed overlay.
- The video drops frames: OBS notes that rising dropped-frame counts can point to an unstable connection to the streaming service or a connection that cannot sustain the chosen bitrate. Check the connection and encoder settings before relying on the broadcast.
