To disconnect Bluetooth devices across your Windows PC, turn Bluetooth off in Settings. To stop just one device temporarily, turn that peripheral off; to make Windows forget it, remove its saved pairing. These actions have different effects, so choose based on whether you want to reconnect without setup later.
Choose the kind of disconnect you need
| Action | What it affects | What happens when you reconnect |
|---|---|---|
| Turn Bluetooth off in Windows | Bluetooth connections generally across the PC | Turn Bluetooth back on to resume using Bluetooth. |
| Turn off one peripheral | Only that headset, speaker, mouse, keyboard, or other device | Power the peripheral on again; its saved pairing remains. |
| Remove the device in Settings | Its saved pairing with the PC | Pair it with Windows again before using it. |
Microsoft’s Windows instructions describe turning off Bluetooth and removing a device, but do not document a universal Windows per-device “Disconnect” button that works across devices. If Bluetooth should stay available for other devices, use the peripheral’s power control for a temporary interruption.
Turn Bluetooth off for the whole PC
Windows 11
- Select Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Switch Bluetooth off.
You can also select the Network, Sound, or Battery icon beside the time and date to open Quick Settings, then select the Bluetooth tile. If the tile is not shown, add it to Quick Settings.
Windows 10
- Select Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
- Switch Bluetooth off.
This is a PC-wide Bluetooth setting, not a way to stop only one peripheral. Microsoft notes that switching Bluetooth off and back on resets Bluetooth and may help with connection problems. Microsoft’s instructions for turning Bluetooth on or off.

Remove a device and forget its pairing
Windows 11
- Go to Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
- Find the device, open its More options (…) menu, and select Remove device.
- Confirm if prompted.
Windows 10
- Go to Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
- Select the device, choose Remove device, and confirm if prompted.
Removal forgets the saved pairing; it is not simply a temporary disconnect. To use the device again, pair it anew: in Windows 11, select Add device; in Windows 10, select Add Bluetooth or other device. Choose Bluetooth and then select the device when it appears. See Microsoft’s Bluetooth pairing instructions.
Stop one peripheral temporarily
If you want other Bluetooth devices to remain connected or available, use the power switch or control on the device you want to stop. For example, switch off a headset or speaker, or turn off a wireless mouse. This avoids disabling Bluetooth for the PC and preserves the device’s saved pairing.

If the Bluetooth setting or tile is missing
A missing or unavailable Bluetooth control may mean the PC has no Bluetooth adapter or its adapter driver is not installed. If you know the PC has Bluetooth hardware but the control is missing or grayed out, the issue may involve hardware, drivers, or firmware rather than disconnecting a paired device. Microsoft recommends consulting the PC manufacturer for model-specific guidance.
