Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo disable Secure Boot for a Hyper-V virtual machine, shut down the Generation 2 VM, then clear Enable Secure Boot under Settings > Security in Hyper-V Manager. You can also run Set-VMFirmware -VMName 'TestVM' -EnableSecureBoot Off in PowerShell, replacing TestVM with the VM’s exact name.
Before you change the setting
- Secure Boot is available for Generation 2 VMs and is enabled by default. Generation 1 VMs use legacy BIOS and do not have this Secure Boot setting. See Microsoft’s generation comparison.
- Shut down the VM before changing Secure Boot. Microsoft’s documented procedure specifies that the VM should be Off.
- Disabling Secure Boot removes a boot-time protection that helps prevent unauthorized firmware, operating systems, and UEFI drivers from running. Microsoft explains this feature in its Generation 2 security overview.
- A shielded VM enforces Secure Boot as part of its security requirements, so disabling it may not be compatible with that VM’s configuration.
- You cannot change a VM’s generation after creating it. If the VM is Generation 1, the Generation 2 firmware controls described here do not apply.
Disable Secure Boot in Hyper-V Manager
- Shut down the virtual machine and confirm its state is Off.
- In Hyper-V Manager, right-click the VM and select Settings.
- Select Security in the settings list.
- Clear Enable Secure Boot, then select Apply or OK to save the change.
- Start the VM when appropriate for your workload.
Disable Secure Boot with PowerShell
Run PowerShell with permissions to manage the VM, and substitute its exact name for TestVM:
Set-VMFirmware -VMName 'TestVM' -EnableSecureBoot Off
Microsoft documents Set-VMFirmware for configuring Generation 2 VM firmware; its -EnableSecureBoot parameter accepts On or Off. See the Set-VMFirmware reference.
Check the firmware setting
To retrieve the VM’s firmware configuration after making the change, run:

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Get-VMFirmware -VMName 'TestVM'
Replace TestVM with the same VM name. The cmdlet retrieves Generation 2 firmware configuration; inspect the returned object for the Secure Boot setting. Microsoft’s Get-VMFirmware reference does not specify a particular output string to look for.
If a Linux VM still will not boot
Disabling Secure Boot is not the only option to check. Microsoft documents the Microsoft UEFI Certificate Authority Secure Boot template for Linux distributions. Depending on the guest and its boot components, selecting that template may allow Secure Boot to remain enabled. The setting is in the VM’s Settings > Security area; Microsoft describes the template and related Generation 2 security options in its security overview.

Secure Boot in the VM is separate from the host
Generation 2 Hyper-V VMs have virtual firmware, so their Secure Boot setting is configured for the VM. Do not look for this option in the physical computer’s BIOS or UEFI settings: the host’s Secure Boot state is not the control used to enable or disable Secure Boot for an individual Generation 2 guest.
