To temporarily allow maintenance, suspend BitLocker; to remove encryption, choose Turn off BitLocker and let Windows decrypt the drive. These actions are not interchangeable: suspension leaves data encrypted but makes the decryption key available in the clear, while turning BitLocker off removes protection as decryption completes.

Suspending BitLocker and turning it off are different

Microsoft distinguishes a temporary suspension from decryption. Suspension keeps the drive encrypted, but BitLocker does not validate system integrity at startup while protection is suspended. Turning BitLocker off starts a full decryption process; it is not an instant toggle. Microsoft’s BitLocker operations guide describes both actions and their consequences.

What changes Suspend protection Turn off BitLocker
Duration Temporary; protection can be resumed manually or after a specified number of restarts. Decryption continues until the selected volume is decrypted.
Is data still encrypted? Yes. The volume remains encrypted, but its key is made available in the clear while suspended. No, once decryption completes.
Is normal protection active? No. Startup integrity validation is not performed while protection is suspended. Protection is removed as decryption completes.
Does it resume automatically? It can, depending on the restart count you specify; otherwise, resume it manually. No. Turning protection back on later is a separate action.

Microsoft puts the permanent option plainly: “Decrypt completely removes BitLocker protection and fully decrypts the drive.” That is why suspension is generally the appropriate choice for a temporary maintenance window, while decryption is for when encryption is no longer required.

When to suspend protection

Consider suspending BitLocker before certain non-Microsoft software updates or firmware and hardware maintenance if the change could cause Windows to request a recovery key at startup. Follow the instructions for the specific maintenance task, then resume protection as soon as it is complete.

Do not suspend BitLocker just for routine Microsoft quality or feature updates. Microsoft says those updates require no user action. Decrypting a drive is not a general troubleshooting measure; Microsoft advises doing so when protection is no longer needed, not as a way to troubleshoot a problem.

How to suspend and resume BitLocker

Use an account with the necessary administrator rights, and confirm that your Windows edition and organizational policy allow the management option you intend to use. Microsoft documents the Control Panel, PowerShell, and manage-bde.exe routes for supported Windows versions.

Using Control Panel

  1. Open Control Panel and go to System and Security > BitLocker Drive Encryption.
  2. Find the drive and select Suspend protection. Confirm if Windows asks.
  3. After the maintenance task, return to the same screen and select Resume protection.

Using PowerShell

To suspend protection on the C: volume until you resume it manually, run PowerShell as an administrator and enter:

  • Super fast USB 3.0 Connection - Data transfer speeds up to 10X faster than USB 2.0
  • Software Free Design - With no admin rights needed
  • Sealed from Physical Attacks by Tough Epoxy Coating
  • Brute Force Self Destruct Feature
Suspend-BitLocker -MountPoint "C:" -RebootCount 0

Then, after maintenance, resume protection with:

Resume-BitLocker -MountPoint "C:"

Microsoft’s Suspend-BitLocker reference says that if you omit the reboot count, protection resumes after one restart. The value 0 keeps it suspended until you run the resume command.

Using Command Prompt

To suspend protection on C: until you resume it manually, open Command Prompt as an administrator and run:

manage-bde -protectors -disable C:

Resume protection with:

manage-bde -protectors -enable C:

Check that you have named the intended volume before running either command. Suspending on the wrong drive changes that drive’s protection state instead.

How to turn off BitLocker and decrypt a drive

Turn BitLocker off only if you intend to remove encryption from the selected volume. Decryption can take time, and Microsoft’s documentation does not specify a universal duration; it depends on the drive and device. Keep the device powered and allow the operation to finish.

Using Control Panel

  1. Open Control Panel and go to System and Security > BitLocker Drive Encryption.
  2. For the volume you want to decrypt, select Turn off BitLocker.
  3. Confirm the action and let Windows complete decryption.

Using PowerShell

In an elevated PowerShell window, run the command for the volume you intend to decrypt:

Disable-BitLocker -MountPoint "C:"

Microsoft documents Disable-BitLocker as a way to turn off BitLocker on the specified volume. Allow the operation to complete rather than treating command execution as proof that decryption has finished.

Using Command Prompt

In Command Prompt opened as an administrator, run:

manage-bde -off C:

This starts decryption of C:. Microsoft’s manage-bde off reference states that key protectors are removed when decryption completes. Check the volume’s status to verify completion.

A recovery key unlocks a drive; it does not disable encryption

A BitLocker recovery password or key can unlock a protected drive when Windows requests recovery. That restores access; it does not decrypt the volume or turn off BitLocker. Microsoft documents unlocking separately in its manage-bde unlock reference. If your goal is only to regain access, use the recovery process rather than turning off encryption.

Verify the drive’s status after making a change

After maintenance, verify that protection is active again. In PowerShell, check the intended volume with:

Get-BitLockerVolume -MountPoint "C:"

Review the reported protection and encryption status rather than assuming a command completed the change you intended. If you suspended protection, resume it; if you turned BitLocker off, wait for decryption to finish before treating the volume as decrypted.
