To stop automatic frame-rate switching, first identify which device is requesting the change. On Apple TV, turn off Match Frame Rate; on supported Roku players, disable Auto-adjust display refresh rate. NVIDIA SHIELD TV’s documented match feature is a playback-time action, while a TV or monitor’s VRR setting is mainly for compatible gaming devices—not a universal streaming fix.

What automatic frame-rate switching means

Video has a content frame rate: the number of images shown each second. A screen has a refresh rate: how often it updates. A streaming device can keep a fixed output mode and fit video into it, or request a display-mode change to better align the output with the video’s cadence. Roku describes how displaying still frames in quick succession creates the illusion of motion in its refresh-rate support article.

Frame-rate matching is usually controlled by the streaming player or app. VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), by contrast, lets a compatible gaming source vary a display’s refresh timing; it is not interchangeable with a streaming box’s match-content control. Android TV documentation describes APIs that allow supported apps to request display matching on supported hardware, so behavior can vary by app as well as device (Android Developers).

Turn off matching on the streaming device

Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD

  1. Open Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content.
  2. Turn off Match Frame Rate.

Apple treats Match Frame Rate and Match Dynamic Range as separate controls. Leave Match Dynamic Range unchanged if you only want to stop frame-rate changes. Options depend on the Apple TV model, connected display, and selected format (Apple Support; Apple TV user guide).

Roku streaming player

On supported Roku players, open the advanced display settings and turn off Auto-adjust display refresh rate. Roku says that when this option is enabled, the player switches to a title’s native format when playback begins. Menu labels and availability can vary by model and software; if the setting is absent, consult the manual or support information for your exact player (Roku Support).

NVIDIA SHIELD TV

SHIELD’s documented Match frame rate (beta) is launched from playback quick settings while a video is playing. NVIDIA describes it as a manual action, not a permanent global mode: the refresh rate returns to its original value when playback stops, and you must invoke the action for each playback session. To avoid switching, do not activate it and check whether the app has its own playback controls. NVIDIA notes that not all apps support the feature and some displays may have difficulty with certain refresh rates (SHIELD TV guide; NVIDIA Support).

Other smart TVs and streaming devices

There is no single menu path established for every television brand, monitor, Fire TV device, app, or firmware version. An internal TV app and an HDMI streaming box can behave differently on the same screen. Look in the source device’s video or playback settings for frame-rate, refresh-rate, or match-content options, then check the model-specific manual if you cannot find one.

When to check the TV or monitor instead

If the change happens during a game or while using a PC or console, inspect the display’s VRR, Adaptive-Sync, or gaming settings, as well as the source device’s settings. Amazon describes VRR as syncing a Fire TV Smart TV’s refresh rate with a compatible gaming device; ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) lets a gaming device cause the TV to enter a low-lag mode. Both are model-dependent gaming features, not general streaming frame-rate switches (Amazon Fire TV Help).

Disabling VRR may address a gaming or display issue, but it will not necessarily stop a streaming app or box from requesting a video-mode change. The available evidence does not establish a current universal menu path for turning off a “Match Original Frame Rate” setting on Fire TV streaming sticks, so check the exact device’s current settings and documentation rather than assuming the Smart TV controls apply.

Diagnose a brief black screen or flicker

  1. Note when it happens. A switch at playback start or when changing titles points first to the player or app’s matching settings. A change during gaming points toward VRR or another gaming/display setting.
  2. Identify the source and model. Determine whether the video comes from a TV’s internal app, an HDMI streamer, a PC, or a console. A TV menu cannot necessarily override a mode request from an HDMI player.
  3. Change one relevant setting. For example, disable Apple TV’s Match Frame Rate without changing Match Dynamic Range, or turn off Roku’s auto-adjust control if available. On SHIELD, avoid its beta quick action and inspect app controls.
  4. Check the connection if the screen still blanks. A blank can accompany a display-mode change, but it can also indicate an HDMI connection or signal-chain problem. Check the HDMI connection, receiver or soundbar input, and cable as Amazon advises in its Fire TV blank-screen troubleshooting guide. Replacing a cable is not a guaranteed way to stop a deliberate refresh-rate switch.
  5. Retest the same app or title. If motion cadence looks worse with matching disabled, restore the setting. The preferred behavior depends on the content, display, and viewer; fixed output is not universally smoother or better.

What to expect after disabling the setting

Turning off a matching control can prevent that device from switching output modes automatically, but it may leave video playing at a fixed output cadence rather than matching the content’s native cadence. The exact result depends on the device, app, selected output format, and display. If a setting is missing or has no effect, another component may be requesting the change, or the app or hardware may not support that control.
