remove_filter( 'the_excerpt', 'wpautop' );This changes front-end output processing. It is not a universal switch for every formatting change in the editor, during pasting, or in saved content, so first identify where the unwanted change occurs.
What WordPress formats automatically
WordPress’s wpautop() function converts double line breaks into paragraph elements and, by default, converts remaining line breaks into <br /> tags. In other words, plain-text spacing can become HTML when post content or an excerpt is rendered.

Disable paragraph and line-break insertion in rendered output
1. Choose a maintained location for the code
Add the filters in a location that remains active for the content you want to change, such as an appropriate maintained theme or a site plugin. WordPress documentation demonstrates the approach in a theme’s functions.php, but the correct location depends on how your site is maintained and which rendering path your theme or plugins use.

2. Remove the filters
remove_filter( 'the_content', 'wpautop' );
remove_filter( 'the_excerpt', 'wpautop' );The first line affects content passed through the the_content hook. The second affects excerpts passed through the_excerpt. If you remove only one filter, the other output path keeps its automatic paragraph processing.
3. Test the actual output
- Back up the site or ensure you have a tested way to restore the previous code.
- Apply the change in a staging environment when possible.
- Open a post containing multiple paragraphs and intentional single line breaks.
- Inspect the rendered HTML and confirm whether the unwanted
<p>or<br />elements are gone. - Check excerpts, archive listings, widgets, page builders, and custom templates that may use different hooks or apply their own formatting.
Removing the filter leaves spacing and HTML presentation to the authored content or to another rendering layer. Existing posts may therefore look compressed, run together, or lose intended spacing until their markup is adjusted.

If the change happens inside the block editor
The PHP filter above changes output processing; it does not provide a universal editor preference. The Block Editor Handbook documents @wordpress/autop as a JavaScript implementation of automatic paragraph conversion and documents removep for reversing paragraph tags. If text changes while you type, paste, or save a block, inspect that editor-side behavior rather than assuming wpautop is responsible.
Diagnose the timing
- During typing or pasting: investigate block-editor transformations and the block’s stored content.
- Only after the page renders: inspect
the_content,the_excerpt, theme templates, and plugin filters. - Only in one template or component: check whether it uses a custom hook instead of the standard content hooks.
Smart quotes are a separate problem
If WordPress changes straight quotation marks into curly quotes, removing wpautop will not address it. Paragraph insertion and typographic substitutions use separate processing paths; investigate wptexturize() and the filters applied by your theme and plugins instead.

Use a narrower change when possible
Removing a filter from a standard hook can affect every post or excerpt that uses that hook. Before applying it site-wide, decide whether you actually need:
- a site-wide change to rendered post content;
- a change to excerpts only;
- a correction in one custom template or component; or
- an editor-side adjustment for a particular block workflow.
A targeted solution reduces the risk of changing layouts that currently depend on automatic paragraph spacing. Review the final HTML in the contexts where visitors see it, not just in the editor.

Troubleshooting after removal
Paragraphs disappear or text runs together
Add explicit, valid HTML paragraphs or other spacing in the authored content or template, then retest the affected templates.
Single line breaks no longer appear
Because the default wpautop() behavior also creates <br /> tags for remaining line breaks, removing it can eliminate those breaks. Add the required markup deliberately where the design needs it.

Nothing changes
The content may not pass through the_content or the_excerpt, or another filter may add formatting later. Trace the actual hook and inspect the final rendered source before changing more filters.
The editor still changes text
That indicates an editor-side transformation rather than only a front-end PHP filter. Examine the block’s saved markup and the block editor’s automatic paragraph behavior.
