To digitize a family cassette, inspect it first, play it on a clean, maintained cassette deck, record its line-level output to a computer or USB audio interface, and save an unprocessed WAV capture before editing. Then make convenient listening copies, document who and what the recordings contain, and keep backups in separate places. If a cassette is dirty, damaged, jammed, or difficult to play, do not risk another playback: seek help from an audio-preservation specialist.
1. Inspect the cassette before playing it
Playback can damage magnetic tape, and each additional play creates another opportunity for harm. NARA advises limiting plays and prioritizing important recordings. Examine the shell and tape through the cassette window without touching the tape itself. If it is visibly dirty, dusty, shedding debris, damaged, jammed, or has loose tape—or if the cassette does not turn normally—stop and ask a preservation specialist for guidance rather than forcing it through a deck. See NARA’s audio guidance and its machine-readable media guidance.
Keep cassettes in protective cases, stored vertically on edge, away from strong magnetic fields such as speakers, motors, transformers, and surge protectors. NARA’s archival guidance recommends 30–40% relative humidity and 50–65°F for magnetic tape; these are collection-storage recommendations, not a reason every household must install climate-control equipment. NARA recommends reformatting audio tape older than 15 years; that is an age-based recommendation, not a prediction that a tape will fail at that age.
2. Choose a playback and recording setup
You need a working cassette deck and a way to send its audio into a computer. Use the deck’s line outputs when available; do not assume a microphone input is equivalent to a line input. Check the deck manual, computer connections, and interface specifications before buying cables or equipment.

| Setup | Connection | When it may suit you |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional cassette deck plus USB audio interface | Connect the deck’s RCA line outputs to an interface with line-level inputs, then connect the interface to the computer. | Useful if you already have a suitable deck, want to reuse it, or may record other audio sources. The deck and interface must be compatible and in good working condition. |
| USB cassette deck | Connect the deck to the computer by USB, then select it as the recording input in your audio software. | May simplify the connection if you do not have a conventional deck and interface. Confirm that the computer recognizes the device and that its channel settings match the tape. |
Audacity documents both USB cassette devices and conventional-deck connections; its USB recording guidance explains device selection, while its connection guidance covers line connections. The cited guidance does not establish that either setup always sounds better. Playback mechanism condition, correct connections, and appropriate settings matter, so avoid choosing equipment based on an unsupported blanket sound-quality claim.
Match the tape’s playback settings
Check the cassette for a Dolby marking and use the corresponding Dolby playback setting on the deck when available. Audacity warns that playing a Dolby-encoded tape without the matching setting can make the result sound too bright. Clean and maintain the deck’s heads and tape path according to its manual; do not improvise repairs on a fragile recording.

3. Make a test recording, then capture the tape
- Connect the deck. Route its line output to a computer line input or a USB audio interface with line-level inputs. For a USB deck, connect it and confirm that the computer detects it.
- Select the recording input. In your audio software, choose the actual connected device and a channel setting that matches the source. Audacity’s recording workflow describes recording and saving a project.
- Record a short test passage. Watch the input meter while the tape plays. If peaks clip, lower the input level and test again. Audacity’s sample tape-digitization workflow recommends keeping the maximum peak around −6 dB; that is its example workflow’s recommendation, not a universal requirement.
- Capture both sides. Record each side, either in one project with clear boundaries or as separate files. Preserve the original order and note which side or sequence each file represents.
- Save an unprocessed WAV capture. Keep this source separate from edited versions. Audacity’s sample workflow demonstrates exporting a 32-bit float WAV as a raw capture that can be brought back into the editing project. Treat that as a documented workflow option, not a mandatory setting for every home transfer.
Do not begin with noise reduction or cuts. First preserve what the playback setup captured. Noise reduction is optional, and results depend on tape condition, playback alignment, head cleanliness, and Dolby settings. Software cannot restore information that was never captured or repair physically damaged tape.

4. Make listening copies and preserve the recording’s context
From the unprocessed capture, you can create smaller, compressed files for convenient listening or sharing. Keep those access copies distinct from the higher-quality, minimally compressed preservation copy. NARA explains the difference between preservation and access copies in its audio guidance. If you hire a transfer service, ask what file formats it will deliver and whether you will receive both types of copy.

Use an open file format where possible, as the Library of Congress recommends in its personal audio archiving guidance. Give files descriptive names and record known details in file metadata or a separate note, such as:
- Names of the people speaking or performing, if known.
- Recording date and place, preserving uncertainty honestly—for example, “date unknown; probably late 1970s.”
- The original cassette label, side, and sequence.
- The digitization date and any transfer notes that could help explain the files.
Add a short text or PDF description explaining what the collection contains and how the digital files relate to the original cassettes. Contextual documentation helps family members interpret a recording later; the Canadian Conservation Institute’s audio-tape digitization guidance also addresses documentation and monitoring.

5. Back up the files and check them over time
Keep at least two copies in separate physical locations, such as one at home and one elsewhere. The Library of Congress recommends checking that saved audio files remain readable at least once a year and creating new media copies every five years or as needed. These practices reduce the risk of losing the only copy; they do not guarantee permanent preservation. See its audio personal-archiving recommendations.

When to use a professional transfer service
Choose professional help when a recording is fragile, valuable, visibly contaminated, physically damaged, or difficult to play—or when you do not have reliable playback equipment. NARA points readers to the ARSC Audio Preservation and Restoration Directory and the AIC conservator search, which includes electronic media conservators. Ask about the delivered preservation and listening copies, file formats, and documentation before handing over irreplaceable recordings.

How archival transfer practices relate to home digitizing
The Library of Congress says its institutional recorded-sound transfers use 96 kHz/24-bit broadcast WAV. That describes its collection practice, not a required setting for a household transfer. For a family recording, the priorities are a safe, correctly configured playback; an unclipped, unprocessed capture; useful documentation; and copies stored and checked responsibly. See the Library’s sound preservation overview.
