A screenshot failure does not prove that Cloudflare is down. The fault may be a Cloudflare incident, DNS or Workers configuration, a connection problem at your origin, or an error page generated by the origin itself. Classify the layer first: record the exact URL, UTC time, runner region, status code and headers; check Cloudflare’s component and region status; then compare the proxied request with a controlled direct-origin test. This produces evidence you can give your host and a repeatable test for recovery.
Start by classifying what actually failed
A screenshot runner can return a blank image, a Cloudflare-branded error page, an application error page, or a page whose main document loads while CSS, JavaScript, fonts, images or API calls fail. Those outcomes point to different layers, so save the failure before refreshing it.
- Edge or Cloudflare service: an incident, routing fault or Cloudflare-generated 502/504 can stop the request before your server responds.
- DNS or Workers: an invalid DNS target, a record pointing to a Cloudflare address, or a Worker exception can fail a route even when the origin is healthy.
- Origin connectivity: the origin may be down, refusing Cloudflare connections, overloaded, unreachable from Cloudflare, or unable to complete a request before a timeout.
- Origin-generated response: your web server or application can return a 5xx page that Cloudflare merely passes through.
- Browser-only failure: the document may be healthy while scripts, consent overlays, blocked resources or client-side API calls prevent a usable screenshot.
The visible bitmap cannot identify these layers by itself. Headers, status codes, trace data and a request log can.
1. Establish scope, timing and the exact reproduction
- Copy the complete URL, including path and query string. A failure on one route may not be a zone-wide outage.
- Record the time in UTC and the local timezone, the screenshot runner’s region, browser version and profile, and the response status.
- Describe the artifact precisely: blank image, branded Cloudflare page, application error, partial page or missing assets.
- Run the same URL twice without changing settings. Note whether the result is deterministic or intermittent.
- Test a known-good page on the same hostname and, if appropriate, a different hostname on the same origin. This separates a route problem from a broader failure.
Keep the original screenshot and response body. Do not overwrite the first capture after a retry; its timestamp and cf-ray value may be the most useful correlation data.

2. Check Cloudflare’s official status before changing DNS
Open the official Cloudflare Status API and its component/region view before disabling the proxy, changing nameservers or editing DNS. Components are reported as operational, degraded performance, partial outage or major outage. Match the incident’s start time and affected geography to your screenshot runner’s region.
A green aggregate status does not prove that your zone, route or region is healthy. Conversely, an incident does not prove that every failed screenshot has the same cause. Continue collecting request-level evidence and avoid making irreversible DNS changes during a broad incident.
3. Read the HTTP response instead of relying on the image
Reproduce the request from a shell and preserve both headers and body:

A branded Cloudflare 502 or 504 generally means Cloudflare is reporting an origin response. An unbranded, empty or otherwise unusual 502/504 can be Cloudflare-generated. In either case, inspect origin load, crashes, network failures and request timeouts rather than assuming the edge is at fault.
4. Use browser DevTools to find visual and asset failures
Open the URL in an Incognito or Private window and reproduce the problem with the Network panel open. Preserve the document request and every failed dependent request. Filter for status codes 4xx and 5xx, blocked requests, CORS errors, certificate errors and requests that remain pending.

Compare the main document with CSS, JavaScript, fonts, images and API calls. A successful document status does not guarantee a complete screenshot: a blocked stylesheet can make a page appear blank, while a failed API call can leave a client-rendered application empty. Record the response headers and cf-ray for the failed requests, not only the top-level page.
Export a HAR when the issue is visual, involves broken elements, is slow or requires the full browser request sequence. Before sharing it, remove cookies, authorization headers, payment data, personal information and private keys. A sanitized HAR gives your host a reproducible timeline without disclosing credentials.
5. Separate Cloudflare, DNS and origin behavior
Only perform a direct-origin comparison when you control the zone and server. Preserve the current proxy configuration so you can roll it back. If you know the origin IP, a controlled HTTPS test can use the production hostname and the correct Host header:

Do not treat a direct test as equivalent if it bypasses authentication, a load balancer, firewall rules or application routing. A direct success with a proxied failure points toward Cloudflare, DNS, edge policy or the path between Cloudflare and the origin. A direct failure points toward the origin or its network, although Cloudflare may still expose a different failure to clients.
A temporary DNS-only comparison can provide the same evidence, but make the smallest possible change, record the exact time, and restore the original proxy state immediately after testing. DNS propagation and cached resolver answers can make a change appear inconsistent.
6. Interpret the common Cloudflare errors

This correlation is more reliable than treating every 520 as an origin shutdown.
8. Build an evidence packet for your host
Send one concise packet rather than a stream of screenshots. Include:
- Full URL and the exact UTC timestamp, with timezone noted.
- Screenshot runner region, browser version and profile, and whether the failure was blank, branded, partial or application-generated.
- HTTP status, response headers,
cf-ray,cf-error-typeandcf-error-originwhen present. - Relevant
/cdn-cgi/traceoutput and sanitized HAR files. - Direct-origin or DNS-only results, including the time the comparison was made and the proxy state.
- For 520,

Cloudflare’s guidance for most 5xx errors is to contact the hosting provider or site administrator with the specific code, time and URL. The packet above gives that team enough information to correlate logs without asking you to repeat the test.

9. Verify recovery, not just a green landing page
- Wait until the status incident is resolved or the configuration fix is deployed.
- Rerun the identical URL from the same screenshot region and browser profile.
- Confirm the main document, stylesheets, scripts, fonts, images and API calls all return successfully.
- Compare the new status, headers,
cf-rayvalues and HAR with the failure capture. - Repeat from a second region or a known healthy network if the original failure was regional.
- Keep the incident identifier, before-and-after timestamps and artifacts for trend analysis.
Recovery is established when the same capture path works and its dependent resources are healthy. A single successful landing-page status is not sufficient for a visually complete screenshot.

The browser works, but the screenshot is blank
Check whether the runner received a consent overlay, bot challenge, JavaScript exception or blocked asset. Compare the document and asset requests in DevTools or a HAR. A browser profile, geolocation or user agent difference can also select a different application path.
The page alternates between success and 52x
Record every cf-ray, region and timestamp. Intermittency commonly indicates origin capacity, a failing pool member, network filtering or a regional edge path. Compare affected and healthy regions before changing DNS.
Direct origin succeeds but Cloudflare fails
Verify firewall allow-lists, TLS certificate presentation, origin health checks, DNS targets and Worker routes. Preserve the successful direct response and the proxied headers so the host can correlate the edge request.

Cloudflare status shows an incident, but only one path fails
Continue with route-level evidence. The path may have a Worker exception, an application dependency failure or an origin response unrelated to the incident. Test a static asset and a known-good route on the same hostname.

The response is 200, but the screenshot is incomplete
Inspect dependent requests and client-side errors. Confirm that images loaded after scrolling or lazy-loading, fonts, API calls and scripts completed before capture. A document status alone cannot validate visual completeness.
