Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore retrying a failed HTTP request, determine what failed and whether the first attempt may already have changed server state. Preserve the response or transport-error details, check the API’s retry and idempotency rules, then retry only if replay is safe and the failure could be temporary. Honor any Retry-After header and keep retries within a deadline and attempt budget.
Why a failed request may have an unknown outcome
A client can lose its connection before receiving a response even though the server received and applied the request. A timeout or connection drop therefore does not prove that the operation failed. Replaying a state-changing request in that situation may create a duplicate order, payment, or resource.
HTTP status codes help classify a response, but they do not by themselves establish whether an operation took effect. The API’s contract and the operation’s semantics determine whether another attempt is safe.
What to capture from the failed attempt
Record enough to distinguish an HTTP error from a transport failure and to correlate the event with server-side logs. Useful fields include:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- HTTP method and target endpoint.
- Status code, if a response arrived, along with response headers—especially
Retry-After—and the API error code or response message. - Elapsed time and, when known, the timeout phase or connection state.
- Request or correlation ID and a timestamp.
- Whether the client knows the request was transmitted, if the failure occurred before any response.
Do not put credentials, secrets, or sensitive request bodies in logs. Logging method, URL, status, message sizes, timestamps, and client/server version information is discussed in O’Reilly’s HTTP logging overview; treat that 2002 material as background, not current logging policy.
Classify the failure before deciding to retry
HTTP response received
Interpret the status and error body using the endpoint’s documentation. A 429 commonly signals throttling, while some 5xx responses are transient retry candidates; neither category guarantees that a state-changing operation was not applied. Authentication, authorization, validation, and unsupported-operation errors generally call for correcting credentials, permissions, input, or configuration rather than sending the same request again. API-specific rules can differ.

RFC 9110 defines 502 as a gateway or proxy receiving an invalid upstream response, 503 as temporary inability to handle a request, and 504 as a gateway not receiving a timely upstream response. Those definitions describe the response path, not whether downstream work happened. See RFC 9110 and Microsoft’s transient fault guidance.
No HTTP response received
Separate DNS, TLS, connection, and timeout failures where your client can identify them. A failure before the request was sent may establish that the operation could not have been applied; a disconnect after transmission usually leaves the outcome uncertain. Record what is known, but do not infer “not applied” simply because no response arrived.

Check whether replay is safe
Ask whether sending the same request again has the same intended effect, whether the API documents an idempotency or deduplication mechanism, and whether you can read current state to determine whether the first attempt succeeded.
RFC 9110 treats safe methods, PUT, and DELETE as idempotent by intended effect. That does not rule out incidental side effects in an implementation, and the method alone is not the whole application contract. For a non-idempotent operation such as a create or payment, do not assume an idempotency key is supported: use one only if the particular API documents it. Otherwise, verify the operation’s state before replaying when possible. RFC 9110 says a client should not automatically retry a non-idempotent request unless it can establish safe semantics or detect that the original was never applied.

Honor Retry-After
If the response includes Retry-After, parse the format documented by the API and do not retry sooner than the indicated time. RFC 9110 allows either an HTTP date or a non-negative number of delay seconds; Retry-After: 120 is a protocol example, not a universal recommended delay. Microsoft also advises waiting at least as long as the specified duration.

Use bounded retries when there is no server delay
For a plausibly transient failure with safe replay, use a policy suited to the operation’s deadline and the service’s documented limits. Microsoft recommends exponential backoff with jitter for background operations and cautions against overly aggressive retries. AWS likewise warns that frequent retries can degrade a target service and recommends idempotency for operations used with retry and backoff: AWS retry with backoff guidance.
Set a timeout for each outbound call before adding retry logic, as Microsoft advises. Also set an overall deadline or maximum attempt count; stop if the error is permanent, replay is unsafe, or the budget is exhausted. There is no standards-based universal attempt count or delay: choose based on latency tolerance, operation deadline, SDK behavior, and the API’s limits. Check whether your client library already retries so that retries at multiple layers do not multiply unexpectedly.
A practical decision sequence
- Save the evidence: record the method, endpoint, response or transport error, timing, relevant headers, and correlation ID without logging secrets.
- Classify the failure: determine whether you received an HTTP response or encountered DNS, TLS, connection, or timeout failure; interpret HTTP errors against the API contract.
- Assess the outcome: decide whether the first attempt may have been applied and whether the operation is idempotent or protected by a documented deduplication mechanism.
- Select the next action: correct permanent errors; verify state or reconcile an ambiguous non-idempotent operation; retry only when safe and plausibly transient.
- Bound the retry: honor
Retry-Afterwhen present, otherwise use an appropriate backoff policy, per-call timeout, and overall retry budget.
What determines the right policy for a particular API?
The correct decision depends on the endpoint’s idempotency guarantees, error contract, rate limits, SDK version, and operation deadline. General HTTP guidance cannot substitute for those provider-specific details; consult the API documentation before automating retries.
