To develop an ecommerce website that works well, define what you need to sell and support, choose a hosted platform or custom build, then design and test the complete path from product discovery to order confirmation. Make mobile usability, accessibility, payment security, performance, and ongoing operations part of the build—not launch-day fixes.

1. Define the store’s requirements

Start with the business and operating needs the website must support. Turn them into specific requirements and acceptance checks before choosing a platform or writing code.

  • Catalog: products, variants, categories, product attributes, inventory rules, and expected catalog size.
  • Customers and regions: customer types and the countries or regions you intend to serve.
  • Fulfillment: shipping methods, delivery estimates, pickup or other fulfillment needs, and how orders will be handled.
  • Payments and policies: payment options, taxes, returns, privacy, shipping, and other store policies that customers need to review.
  • Integrations: inventory, accounting, customer support, analytics, marketing, or other services the store needs to work with.
  • Operations: who will update products, process orders, handle refunds, and maintain the website, plus expected traffic and available technical skills.

Write acceptance checks for important flows—for example, selecting a variant must show the correct price and inventory status, and a completed purchase must produce an order confirmation.

2. Choose a hosted platform or a custom build

A hosted ecommerce platform can provide a storefront and managed checkout workflow. A custom storefront can offer more control, but your team must account for the extra implementation and ongoing maintenance. Neither approach is best for every store.

Decision factor Questions to answer
Time and expertise Can your team build and maintain the storefront, integrations, and checkout, or is a managed workflow more practical?
Customer experience Do the platform’s design and checkout options support the buying experience you need?
Catalog and operations Can you manage products, variants, inventory, shipping, and fulfillment as required?
Integrations and geography Are the payment options and services you need available for your target regions?

Total operating cost Compare the costs relevant to your actual setup, including platform or development work, integrations, payment arrangements, and maintenance.

Shopify documents its checkout and theme system, but that documentation is not an independent comparison of ecommerce platforms. Requirements for its themes and apps can change. Review the current platform documentation and confirm that a candidate meets your project needs before committing. See Shopify’s Theme Store requirements and Shopify’s App Store requirements.

3. Build the catalog and buying path

Organize the store so shoppers can find products, understand what they are buying, and complete an order without avoidable uncertainty.

Product discovery and product pages

Use clear categories and navigation, then make each product page a useful purchase decision page. Shopify’s Theme Store requirements provide a platform-specific checklist that can also help when planning a broader storefront:

  • Product title and description.
  • Variant options, their names and values, and the applicable price.
  • Unit price where it applies, plus compare-at price where used.
  • Product imagery customers can view.

Make price and availability clear as shoppers change variants. Use accurate images and descriptions, and provide alternative text for images that convey product information.

Cart, checkout, and after-purchase details

Let customers review their selections and costs before placing an order. Explain shipping and relevant store policies at an appropriate point in the journey. The checkout should collect the information needed for delivery and payment, allow the customer to review the order, and lead to a clear confirmation after purchase. Shopify describes its managed checkout workflow in its Shopify Checkout documentation; the exact implementation depends on the platform and payment arrangement you choose.

4. Choose a payment arrangement with compliance in mind

Select a payment provider that supports your needs, then follow its integration instructions. Before drawing conclusions about payment security or PCI DSS obligations, establish how the payment page is actually implemented: payment elements may be embedded in your site, the customer may be redirected, or the flow may be fully outsourced.

PCI SSC’s guidance makes a specific distinction for SAQ A. Its script-attack criterion applies to pages that embed a third-party payment page or form; it does not apply to the redirect or fully outsourced examples described in the FAQ. That distinction alone does not establish a merchant’s eligibility. PCI SSC says SAQ A eligibility requires all payment-page elements to originate from PCI DSS-compliant service providers and none to originate from the merchant’s website, and every other eligibility criterion must also be met. Review the relevant PCI SSC FAQ on the SAQ A script-attack criterion and PCI SSC FAQ on payment-page origins and SAQ eligibility, then ask your payment provider or assessor which requirements apply to your implementation. A hosted processor does not by itself establish that the entire store is compliant.

5. Design for mobile use and accessibility

Plan mobile browsing and purchasing from the start. Test category navigation, product selection, cart review, forms, and checkout on narrow screens as well as desktop. Shopify requires Theme Store themes to be responsive and lists supported mobile browsing environments; check the current requirements because browser support specifications can change. These platform submission requirements are not a substitute for testing your own store.

Include accessibility checks throughout the buying path:

  • Make navigation and controls operable by keyboard.
  • Keep keyboard focus visible so users can tell which control is selected.
  • Provide appropriate alternative text for informative images.
  • Associate labels with form controls, including checkout fields.

6. Test real store content before launch

Test populated pages and realistic purchase scenarios, not just empty templates or the homepage. Shopify currently requires Theme Store submissions to achieve an average Lighthouse performance score of 60 and an average accessibility score of 90 across product, collection, and home pages on desktop and mobile. Those figures are submission thresholds for Shopify’s Theme Store, not universal ecommerce standards or guarantees of usability, accessibility, or sales performance. See the current Shopify Theme Store requirements for scope and details.

Run through checks such as these before launch and after meaningful changes:

  • Broken links, navigation, and product imagery.
  • Variant selection, displayed prices, and inventory behavior.
  • Cart contents, shipping calculations, payment flow, and order confirmation.
  • Confirmation emails, order processing, refunds, and analytics.
  • Keyboard use, visible focus, image alternatives, form labels, and mobile layouts.
  • Performance and accessibility on product, collection, and home pages with realistic content.

Repeat the purchase flow when you change checkout settings, payment integrations, shipping rules, or important storefront behavior. Automated scores can flag issues, but they do not tell you whether a real customer can understand the offer and complete the purchase.

7. Secure and maintain the store

Security responsibilities depend on your platform, integrations, and payment architecture. Keep the payment provider’s implementation guidance and applicable assessor advice in view; do not treat a hosted checkout as proof that every part of the store meets your obligations.

If you build a Shopify app to accompany a store, Shopify’s App Store rules require TLS for client-to-server exchanges and access scopes limited to what the app needs to function. These are Shopify app requirements, not a complete security or privacy review. Consult the Shopify App Store requirements and review the security and privacy needs of the whole implementation.

8. Capture screenshots for visual checks

When reviewing responsive layouts or documenting a storefront, you can use a browser’s built-in responsive tools and screenshots as a manual check. For repeatable captures, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF capture. The example below requests a screenshot of a store page; replace the URL with a page you are authorized to capture.

Or skip the browser setup

Send one GET request with your API key and target URL. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

Does using a hosted payment provider make my whole store PCI compliant?

No. Eligibility depends on the payment-page implementation and all applicable criteria. Ask your payment provider or assessor which requirements apply.
