To develop a music streaming app for Android, build the playback client with AndroidX Media3 and ExoPlayer, keep playback and its media session in a foreground MediaSessionService, and connect the app’s interface with a MediaController. Separately, decide how you will source and authorize the music, deliver streams, and handle accounts and monetization: Android’s player library does not provide a catalog or streaming business.

How do I develop a music streaming app for Android?

Start with the service you intend to offer, then build the Android player around that product. A working player can play an audio URL, but that alone does not establish permission to stream the recording or provide the catalog, delivery infrastructure, or customer features a service needs.

1. Define the catalog and service

Decide whether the app will play music you own, third-party music you have licensed, user uploads, or a combination. Define the countries where the service will be available, whether listening will require an account, and whether you plan to offer subscriptions, advertising, or downloads. Secure the necessary permissions for music and artwork before distributing content.

Music rights are not one-size-fits-all. A song may involve rights in both the musical composition and the particular sound recording. The rights and permissions required depend on the catalog, territory, and business model; get jurisdiction-specific legal advice rather than treating a playable stream URL as proof of authorization. Google Play prohibits apps that infringe others’ intellectual property and explicitly gives unauthorized streaming as an example in its Intellectual Property policy.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

2. Choose the Android playback foundation

Use AndroidX Media3’s Player abstraction, with ExoPlayer as the usual starting implementation. Android describes ExoPlayer as Media3’s default Player implementation and recommends it for common playback cases in its ExoPlayer guide. Media3 supports playlists, progressive and adaptive streaming, client-side and server-side ad insertion, and DRM-protected playback.

These are player capabilities, not turnkey service features. Media3 does not provide your music catalog, rights, backend, content-delivery network, subscription system, or a decision about which streaming format or DRM configuration your service should use.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

3. Build the playback experience around real listening needs

Plan the app’s playback model before choosing delivery details. A small service playing progressive streams has different needs from one that offers adaptive quality, large queues, advertising, DRM, or offline listening. Select formats, encoding, and delivery architecture based on your content origin, expected network conditions, quality goals, target devices, and operating costs. Verify format and DRM compatibility for the Android versions and devices you intend to support.

The Android playback documentation establishes that ExoPlayer supports a range of formats and features, but it does not identify a preferred backend vendor, CDN, catalog provider, or codec ladder. Those choices must come from the requirements and economics of your service.

How do I keep music playing in the background on Android?

Do not make the Activity or Fragment the owner of long-running playback. Put the player and media session in a MediaSessionService configured for foreground playback, then have the app’s UI connect to it through a MediaController. Android documents this pattern in its background playback guide.

  1. Create the service: implement a MediaSessionService to own playback independently of the screen.
  2. Initialize player and session: create the ExoPlayer instance and associate it with a MediaSession in the service.
  3. Connect the interface: use a MediaController so screens can issue commands and reflect the session’s current playback state.
  4. Release resources: release the player and session according to the service lifecycle, including when the service is destroyed.

This separation lets playback continue when the user leaves the screen, while the foreground UI can be closed or recreated without being the playback engine. Consult the current Android documentation and release notes as you implement; Media3 APIs and dependency versions change over time.

How do system controls and Android Auto work?

A MediaSession exposes player state and playback commands through Android’s standard media-control model. System controls and compatible external clients can interact with the session, including physical playback buttons and, where supported and configured, Android Auto and companion devices. Android explains session and controller behavior in its Media3 session guide.

Decide which controllers your service should allow to connect and which commands they may issue. A session provides an integration surface; it does not mean every client is automatically authorized or that your app’s catalog becomes browsable everywhere.

When should you use MediaLibraryService?

Use a MediaLibraryService when you want compatible client apps to browse a structured catalog, rather than only control playback already underway. It supports a media-library session for exposing browseable content. For an app whose catalog is available only through its own screens, a regular MediaSessionService may be the appropriate service design.

What should you test before launch?

Validate the complete listening experience with content the service is authorized to use. Testing should cover more than whether the first track starts:

  • Startup delay, seeking, and queue transitions.
  • Behavior during network interruption and recovery.
  • Audio focus and interruptions from other apps or system events.
  • Continued background playback and notification or lock-screen controls.
  • Playback across the Android versions and device types in your target market.

These are recommended validation areas, not claims that a particular app or device configuration has been tested. Google Play’s policy also makes unauthorized copyrighted content a risk in app listings and demonstration materials, not just in the live catalog.

Which decisions remain specific to your service?

The Android client gives you a playback foundation, but the product still needs decisions that cannot be made from player documentation alone:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Catalog and rights: what music and artwork you can use, and in which territories.
  • Delivery: stream formats, encoding, backend, and network recovery strategy.
  • Protection and access: whether DRM, account controls, or authorized downloads are required.
  • Business model: how subscriptions, advertising, or other service features fit the product.
  • Client scope: whether playback is app-only, available to system controls, or exposed as a browsable library to other clients.

Resolve these choices against the catalog permissions, expected listening conditions, target devices, and operating costs. A Kotlin reference book may supplement implementation learning, but it is not a prerequisite; Android’s official Media3 guide includes Kotlin examples.
