In Playwright Test, use a stable locator and toHaveScreenshot() to compare the post-click state with a reviewed baseline.
Write a Playwright test for the post-click state
This example assumes the page is available at /example and the button is named “Show details.” Replace both with values from your application. The visible-text assertion is a synchronization point: it helps establish that the interaction produced the intended state before the screenshot assertion runs.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('captures the expanded details state', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/example');
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Show details' }).click();
await expect(page.getByText('Additional details')).toBeVisible();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('details-expanded.png');
});
Run this with the Playwright Test runner. Screenshot assertions such as toHaveScreenshot() are runner features, not a generic screenshot call available in every Playwright setup. See the official PageAssertions documentation.
Why the order matters
A screenshot captured before the click cannot detect content or layout that appears only after the interaction. The test must reproduce the user action, establish that the intended state appeared, and capture that state. Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing the last one with the expected image; that helps with settling, but does not replace checking that the correct state was reached.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a reliable button locator
Prefer a role locator with the button’s accessible name, such as page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Show details' }). Role locators align with how users and assistive technology perceive controls. If your project deliberately defines test IDs as its testing contract, a test ID can be appropriate instead. See Playwright’s locator guidance.
Assert the actual state
Choose an assertion that proves the relevant transition occurred: for example, that the expanded content is visible. Adapt the example to the page; it does not assume that every button reveals text. A button might expand a panel, reveal an image, switch a tab, or trigger navigation. If it opens a popup or navigates, test that outcome and capture the resulting page or state rather than asserting on content that never appears in the original page.

Create and maintain the visual baseline
On the first run, Playwright creates a reference screenshot. Later runs compare the captured state with that baseline. Review and commit the reference image alongside the test so changes can be inspected in version control. Update a baseline only after a reviewer confirms the visual change is intentional; otherwise, refreshing it can make a regression look like the expected result.
Keep rendering conditions consistent
Use the same browser project and rendering environment when creating and checking baselines. Browser, operating system, hardware, rendering settings, and headless mode can affect pixels. Differences between environments may therefore produce diffs unrelated to an application change. Playwright’s visual comparisons guide explains baseline workflow and environment variance.

Reduce noise narrowly
Playwright disables animations by default for screenshot assertions. Its visual comparison options also allow thresholds and stylesheets to filter volatile content. Use those controls carefully: a high tolerance can overlook real differences, and hiding a region means the test cannot catch meaningful changes there. Prefer controlling the source of volatility when practical, and filter only elements that genuinely should not determine the result. See the assertion options and visual comparison guidance.
When a hosted visual review workflow fits better
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() is a direct choice for teams already using Playwright that want screenshot assertions and committed baselines in their tests. Its local baseline workflow is straightforward, but rendering differences across environments can create diffs, and the assertion requires the Playwright test runner.

Percy with Playwright is another option when a team wants hosted visual review, responsive or browser rendering, and a CI-oriented approval workflow. Percy describes capturing application states, comparing baselines, reviewing visual diffs, and integrating with CI. It adds a vendor service and review process, so confirm current terms and integration requirements before adopting it. For a quick screenshot of a URL, ScreenshotNeo takes a URL in one GET request and returns an image or PDF. This does not replace the Playwright workflow above for clicking a control and verifying a post-click state: ScreenshotNeo’s request captures a URL, while the test needs to perform the interaction first.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo says it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed; and an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. Its Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo, or sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
Troubleshoot failed or noisy comparisons
- The screenshot misses the revealed section: Make sure the test clicks the correct control before capturing. Add an assertion for the resulting state, such as visibility of the expanded content.
- The click times out or targets the wrong control: Check the accessible button name and whether the page has loaded the control. Prefer a role locator with the correct name; use a test ID only if that is the project’s deliberate contract.
- The expected image changes across machines: Run baseline creation and comparison under the same browser project and rendering conditions. Differences in browser, operating system, hardware, settings, or headless mode can affect pixels.
- The page is still changing when the screenshot runs: Assert the specific outcome of the click before capturing. The screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match, but a state assertion clarifies that the test reached the intended UI.
- Unrelated animation or volatile content causes diffs: Playwright disables animations by default for screenshot assertions. For remaining volatile content, consider a narrow threshold or stylesheet filter; do not hide regions whose visual changes matter.
- A navigation or popup makes the assertion fail: Assert the navigation or popup outcome and capture the page or state that resulted from the action, rather than expecting the original page’s content to change.
- The assertion API is unavailable: Confirm the test runs with Playwright Test. The screenshot assertion API requires that runner.
