A DOM mutation or a frame resize can signal other kinds of change, but neither proves that the pixels a visitor sees have changed.
Choose the signal that matches the change you need to detect
| Method | Detects | Does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshot comparison | Differences in rendered pixels within the capture scope | Whether a difference is a bug rather than an expected content change |
MutationObserver |
DOM-tree changes in an iframe document the parent is allowed to access | Whether a mutation is visible; a DOM change can leave the appearance unchanged |
ResizeObserver |
A change in the iframe element’s box size | Whether content inside a frame of unchanged size has changed visually |
| Iframe load lifecycle or a message | That the parent’s frame load state changed, or that a cooperating child sent a defined event | A pixel-level difference unless you separately compare images |
For visual regression checks, Playwright Test supports screenshot assertions and frame selection. Its documentation notes that rendering can vary with the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode, so create and compare baselines in a consistent environment (Playwright visual comparisons).
Compare iframe screenshots with Playwright
Use this approach when you need a repeatable check in a browser test. The example assumes you have a Playwright Test project and a stable test page with an iframe whose title is Account preview. Adapt the URL, title, and readiness condition to your page. The first run creates a baseline; review it before treating it as the expected appearance.
Capture and compare the frame
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('account preview has not changed visually', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/account');
const frame = page.frameLocator('iframe[title="Account preview"]');
await expect(frame.locator('body')).toBeVisible();
// Replace this with a meaningful condition for the content you expect.
await expect(frame.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Account overview' })).toBeVisible();
await expect(frame.locator('body')).toHaveScreenshot('account-preview.png');
});
toHaveScreenshot() compares the current capture with a saved reference and reports a difference when it exceeds the configured tolerance. Use a selector for the smallest stable region that answers your question. Capturing the whole frame body is convenient, but may include volatile content; a specific element can make the check more focused.

For an assertion against the page region around the iframe instead, locate the iframe element from the parent page and screenshot it:
const iframeElement = page.locator('iframe[title="Account preview"]');
await expect(iframeElement).toHaveScreenshot('account-frame.png');
Playwright’s frame APIs support locating and interacting with content in frames (Playwright frames). Screenshot assertion options include a perceived-color threshold, maximum differing pixels or ratio, masking, and screenshot styles. Consult the current Page assertions API for supported options and syntax for your installed Playwright version.

Control what is considered a change
- Wait for meaningful readiness. Prefer an assertion about expected frame content over an arbitrary short timeout. If content is loaded asynchronously, wait for the condition that represents the state you intend to monitor.
- Keep capture conditions consistent. Use the same browser, operating system, viewport, and rendering setup when generating and checking baselines. Differences between environments can create image noise unrelated to a product change.
- Handle dynamic regions deliberately. Clocks, randomized values, rotating promotions, and animations can create changing pixels. Playwright supports masking and screenshot styles to suppress selected volatile areas; avoid masking the very region whose appearance matters.
- Set tolerance based on risk. A threshold allows some perceived color difference; pixel-count limits constrain how much of the image may differ. There is no universal correct threshold. Choose one that catches meaningful visual changes without making insignificant rendering variation fail every run.
- Review diffs before updating baselines. A diff proves the captured output differs from the reference, not that the new output is defective. Inspect the changed region before accepting a new baseline.
Observe DOM changes in a same-origin iframe
If the parent page is permitted to access the iframe document, a MutationObserver can report structural, text, or attribute changes. This is useful when the question is whether particular content changed, but it is not a substitute for visual comparison: hidden or off-screen mutations may not alter the screenshot, while visual rendering can change without the DOM change you chose to observe.
const iframe = document.querySelector('iframe');
iframe.addEventListener('load', () => {
try {
const doc = iframe.contentDocument;
const target = doc?.querySelector('.status-panel');
if (!target) {
console.warn('Status panel not found in iframe');
return;
}
const observer = new MutationObserver((records) => {
console.log('Observed DOM changes:', records.length);
// Respond to relevant mutations; take a screenshot separately
// if the requirement is to verify visual appearance.
});
observer.observe(target, {
subtree: true,
childList: true,
characterData: true,
attributes: true
});
} catch (error) {
console.error('Cannot access iframe document:', error);
}
});
Observe the narrowest subtree and the mutation categories that matter, rather than the entire document by default. If the frame reloads, its document is replaced; attach observation to the newly loaded document. Browser security and page timing can also prevent the target from being available at the moment your code runs.

Use ResizeObserver only for iframe size changes
ResizeObserver reports changes to an element’s size; it does not inspect the rendered pixels inside that element. It is appropriate when a frame becoming taller or wider is itself the event to detect. The W3C describes the API as an element-size observation mechanism (W3C Resize Observer; the cited document is a First Public Working Draft dated 11 February 2020).
const iframe = document.querySelector('iframe');
const resizeObserver = new ResizeObserver((entries) => {
for (const entry of entries) {
console.log('Iframe size changed:', entry.contentRect.width, entry.contentRect.height);
}
});
resizeObserver.observe(iframe);
This observes the iframe element’s box. A stable-size frame can display completely different content without triggering a resize notification.

What changes when the iframe is cross-origin?
The browser’s same-origin policy prevents parent-page scripts from inspecting most properties of a different-origin frame’s Window, including its embedded document. A parent-page MutationObserver therefore cannot watch the DOM inside an unrelated cross-origin iframe. See MDN’s iframe documentation.
- Need the frame’s size? Observe the iframe element from the parent with
ResizeObserver. - Need load lifecycle information? Listen for the iframe element’s
loadevent; it does not reveal what changed inside. - Control both pages? Have the child send a narrowly defined
postMessageevent, and have the parent validate the sender origin before trusting the message. Do not treat an unvalidated message as proof of a trusted change. - Need visual verification? Use browser automation to target the frame and compare screenshots. Frame access in automation is separate from unrestricted parent-page JavaScript access.
Troubleshooting visual checks
- The test cannot find the frame or content. Check the iframe selector and its title, wait for the frame’s expected content rather than only the outer page navigation, and confirm the frame is present in the test page.
- The baseline differs on every run. Look for timestamps, animation, randomized data, network-dependent content, or inconsistent browser and operating-system settings. Stabilize the input or mask only irrelevant regions.
- The frame appears unchanged but the test fails. Inspect the diff image and verify viewport, browser version, device scale, fonts, and capture scope. Rendering can differ even if application data is unchanged.
- A DOM observer throws a security error. The iframe may be cross-origin. Move observation into code served by the child, arrange a validated message protocol if both pages are yours, or switch to screenshot-based browser automation.
- A DOM observer reports too many changes. Narrow the observed subtree and disable mutation categories that are irrelevant to the question.
- The screenshot passes despite a meaningful change. Check that the capture includes the changed region, that the test waits for the relevant content state, and that tolerance or masking is not too permissive.
- A resize check does not fire. Confirm the iframe element’s box actually changed. Internal content changes in a fixed-size iframe are not resize events.
Or skip the browser setup
For a one-off capture or a screenshot workflow that does not need a local browser test, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. It can capture the containing page as an image, but this one-call example does not configure iframe-specific frame selection or compare against a saved baseline; use Playwright when you need an automated visual assertion targeted to a frame.
