Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo detect unauthorized changes, give each contractor an individual, least-privilege account; record approved work; collect CMS, hosting, deployment, and file-change logs; and compare important content and code with a known-good baseline. When something unexpected appears, preserve the evidence and investigate before restoring or deleting anything. A log can identify an account or event, but it cannot by itself prove which person acted or what they intended.
Set the rules before granting contractor access
Write down the contractor’s identity, individual account, role, systems they can access, tasks they may perform, who approves work, and the expected work window. Use separate named accounts rather than a shared administrator login, and grant only the permissions needed for the assignment. Review access when the project scope changes and disable or remove it when the engagement ends. Federal CMS access-control guidance offers an example of these practices; it is not automatically binding on every private website. CMS access-control guidance
Agree on a change path: request, approval, implementation, review, and release. For consequential changes, use staging and have a named owner approve the move to production. Keep the approved request and maintenance window in a record you can later compare with actual activity. That helps distinguish planned work and routine maintenance from unexplained events.
How can I tell what a web developer changed on my website?
Build a timeline from more than one source. A useful event record identifies when the event happened (including time zone), the account and role, the affected component or object, the event type, and whether it succeeded. A source address can help when available. CMS technical guidance emphasizes identifying the component involved and recording outcomes, but logs only contain events the system emits and retains. Start with CMS history and revisions
Enable native content revisions and activity history where your CMS provides them. In WordPress, the security handbook recommends revision control and monitoring changes. Depending on the platform and installed integrations, application logs may reveal content edits, account and role changes, settings changes, plugin or theme actions, and some file activity. Check coverage for your precise WordPress version, page builder, plugins, API routes, and deployment process rather than assuming the log captures everything. WordPress hardening guidance
WordPress plugin listings describe examples, not universal guarantees. WP Activity Log’s listing says its event details can include time, user or role, source IP, and affected object, and that it records a range of content, account, settings, plugin/theme, and file events. It describes a default three-month retention period, configurable retention, and premium export and external-storage or mirroring options. Confirm current edition limits, settings, permissions, retention, and compatibility before relying on these capabilities. WP Activity Log listing

Simple History’s WordPress.org listing describes a timeline, before-and-after content details, user changes, plugin events, and Site Editor event logging in release notes dated August 2026; it says logs are stored in the WordPress database and can be exported. These are vendor-maintained listing statements, not independent comparative test results. Simple History listing
Check systems beyond the CMS
A change may come through version control, SFTP, a hosting control panel, a server configuration edit, a database tool, an API, or a compromised account. Correlate CMS history with hosting, SSH/SFTP, server, database, identity-provider, and deployment logs where available. For code and configuration, compare version-control history or a clean comparison copy. File-integrity monitoring can flag added or modified files that the CMS does not record. WordPress’s hardening guidance discusses system utilities, revision control, kernel-level monitoring, OSSEC, and external integrity monitoring. WordPress hardening guidance

For public-facing changes, periodically compare key pages with a known-good snapshot or an external page-change monitor. This can reveal visible differences, but it may not identify the account or person behind them, explain why a change occurred, or detect changes that do not alter the rendered page.
Track changes made by a contractor in WordPress
- Use an individual WordPress account. Assign the role and capabilities required for the specific work; avoid sharing an administrator login. Record who approved access and when it should end.
- Keep revisions and activity history available. Enable the relevant native revision features and configure an activity-log plugin or other monitoring appropriate to your site. Review its event documentation for content, users, roles, settings, plugins, themes, files, and any API or deployment path you use.
- Test event coverage. In a staging environment, make representative edits and account or configuration changes through the same editor and integrations used in production. Confirm what appears in the log, which details are recorded, and whether alerts arrive promptly.
- Export or separately protect records where possible. If logs exist only in the same WordPress database and an administrator can alter them, they are vulnerable to the same access being monitored. Consider an export or separately controlled destination, and confirm who can delete or disable the logging.
- Compare unexpected events with approved work. Check the timestamp and time zone, account, affected object, source address if recorded, related authentication events, and release schedule. Ask the contractor through the agreed channel for context before treating account attribution as proof of a person’s intent.
When selecting a WordPress activity log or broader monitoring tool, verify coverage against your actual site rather than relying on a broad claim that it logs “everything.” Assess whether it records before-and-after values where useful, alerts on privileged actions, exports and retains records for your needs, and prevents monitored users from silently disabling or deleting the history. Compatibility, privacy, storage, and operating cost also matter.

Protect logs and the approved baseline
Set a review cadence based on site risk: respond promptly to high-impact alerts and review activity around releases and contractor offboarding. Decide in advance how long logs should be retained and who reviews them. Keep approved requests and known-good baselines protected from the same accounts whose changes you are monitoring; where practical, mirror or export logs to a separately controlled destination.
The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration’s web-records guidance says procedures should identify authorized creators, protect records against unauthorized addition, deletion, or alteration, and document website changes. It quotes ISO Technical Report 15489-2, section 7.2.4: “records systems should maintain audit trails or other elements sufficient to demonstrate that records were effectively protected from unauthorized alteration or destruction.” NARA web-records guidance

What to do when a change looks unauthorized
- Preserve evidence first. Save relevant log entries and timestamps, note the time zone, and capture the current affected content or configuration before making changes that could erase useful context.
- Compare against the approval and baseline. Check the request, release record, current page or files, and known-good version. Look for related CMS, hosting, authentication, and deployment events.
- Investigate attribution carefully. Review the account, source address if present, authentication history, related events, and scheduled or automated processes. Contact the contractor to confirm the work and its context. A logged account is a lead, not conclusive proof of the human actor or intent.
- Contain credible risk. If the change is harmful or an account may be compromised, restrict or revoke affected access, rotate potentially exposed credentials, and inspect related accounts and files. Restore from a known-good backup when appropriate, after preserving evidence.
- Document the response. Record what was found, which evidence was retained, decisions and actions taken, and any follow-up changes to access approvals or monitoring. Seek qualified incident-response help if the impact exceeds your ability to investigate safely.
These response steps are practical recommendations based on audit and integrity principles, not a sequence prescribed by one specific authority. WordPress’s security guidance notes that attacks can leave traces in logs or the file system, including new or modified files. WordPress hardening guidance

It reports page verdict and billing status in response headers: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. It also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. This can help document visible page state, but a screenshot does not establish who changed a page or replace CMS and infrastructure logs. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an activity log prove a contractor made a change?
No. It can associate an event with an account and recorded details, but that alone does not establish which person used the account or their intent. Correlate it with approvals, authentication, hosting, and deployment records.
Recommended Free Tools
Will a WordPress activity-log plugin capture every change?
No universal coverage is established. Events vary by plugin, version, integrations, and the route used to make the change. Verify the exact coverage on your own setup before depending on it.
What if I find no log entry for a visible change?
Check hosting, file-transfer, server, database, identity, and deployment records, then compare the page or files with a known-good baseline. The event may have occurred outside the CMS or may not have been recorded.
