Run feature checks inside PhantomJS with page.evaluate(): check whether an input exposes checkValidity() and validity, then test a deliberately invalid field. This tells you what the specific PhantomJS executable does—not what every PhantomJS release supports. If your application relies on a particular rule or on browser-visible validation UI, test that behavior separately in the target build.
What to test—and what each result means
PhantomJS uses QtWebKit, but a WebKit version number alone is not a reliable way to infer support. PhantomJS’s standards guidance recommends feature detection and cautions that detecting a feature does not guarantee complete support. Check the actual executable and the behavior your page depends on.

checkValidity() is a programmatic query: it returns false when a constraint is violated. Interactive validation is a distinct behavior associated with form submission, unless the form uses novalidate, or with reportValidity(). WebKit’s article about interactive validation, published December 12, 2016, describes this distinction; it does not establish which PhantomJS releases incorporated that behavior.
Run a feature and behavior check in PhantomJS
Save this as detect-validation.js. It opens a blank page, creates separate controls for common constraints in the webpage context, and returns a JSON-serializable result. The required-field test is the minimum useful behavior check; the additional cases help reveal whether the rules your application uses are actually enforced.

phantomjs detect-validation.jsThe expected observation for each supported and enforced case is "rejected": true; when the corresponding validity state is exposed, its named flag should also be true. A false value for rejected means that case did not behave as expected in this run. If the method is absent, the test reports that fact rather than attempting to call it. A value of null for a flag means there was no validity object or flag to inspect.
Record the executable, not just the result
Run the test through the same binary, build, operating environment, and page settings used by your application. Record the executable’s version output alongside the JSON so a later run can be compared with the same context. Do not turn a result from one binary into a general statement about PhantomJS.

Keep the test in the page context
page.evaluate() executes its function in the webpage. PhantomJS’s API documentation specifies that values passed into and returned from that function should be simple serializable values. Return booleans, strings, arrays, or plain objects as above—not DOM nodes, functions, or complex host objects. Node-side variables are not automatically available inside the evaluated function; put the test logic inside it or pass serializable arguments explicitly.
Test the exact constraints your page uses
The sample checks required, an invalid type="email" value, pattern, and numeric min and max. Treat every case as an independent probe, not as a blanket HTML5 compatibility verdict. If your form also uses other input types or constraints, add a control configured like the real one and assert its specific result.

Use valid as well as invalid values when a false positive would matter: a rule should reject the test value that violates it, but should not reject a value that meets it. For production-sensitive behavior, use representative boundary values and the same input types and attributes as the real form. A minimal feature probe is not a substitute for regression tests of your application’s own form.

Separate validity checks from validation UI
A passing checkValidity() assertion demonstrates a programmatic result for the tested constraint. It does not show that a form submission is blocked, that a message bubble appears, that focus moves to the invalid control, or that reportValidity() behaves as your interface expects. Those are separate requirements.
If the application relies on interactive behavior, test the actual form with its real attributes and submission path in the deployed PhantomJS build. In particular, check whether the form has novalidate, because that changes submission validation behavior. Do not treat the presence of a reportValidity method as proof that a user-visible message is rendered correctly. A headless test that only reads DOM state cannot establish visual behavior; use a browser and test approach that can verify the interface your users must see.
Make the test match the page settings
PhantomJS page settings default javascriptEnabled to true, and settings apply during the initial page.open() call. If the application disables JavaScript or configures the page differently, reproduce those settings before opening the page. A successful synthetic test on about:blank establishes the feature behavior for that test context; it does not prove the application page loads, runs its scripts, or constructs the form in the same way.

For an application-page test, open the page with page.open(), wait until its form is ready, then use page.evaluate() to inspect the actual control and call checkValidity(). Keep the readiness condition specific to the page; evaluating before client-side code creates the form can produce a missing-element result that says nothing about validation support.
Troubleshoot unexpected results
- The page-open callback reports a failure: the check never reached the page. Confirm the test URL is reachable from the environment running PhantomJS, and handle the callback status before evaluating page code.
checkValidityis missing: that executable does not expose the method on the tested control. Do not infer support from a WebKit version string; verify the deployed binary and decide whether to use a different validation strategy.- The method exists but the invalid value passes: inspect the control’s type, attribute, and assigned value in the page context. Confirm that the chosen value really violates that constraint, then isolate it in a minimal test like the sample before testing the full application.
- The method returns false but a flag is absent or false: record both observations. API exposure and individual validity-state reporting are distinct checks; do not silently treat one as proof of the other.
- The test says valid when the form should be invalid: verify the actual element and its attributes after the application has initialized. Check for differences such as an absent constraint, an altered input type, or a value different from the one intended for the test.
- The DOM test passes but no bubble appears: that is not a contradiction. The test established programmatic rejection, not interactive presentation. Exercise form submission or
reportValidity()in a test capable of observing the user-facing behavior. - Results differ between environments: compare the PhantomJS executable and page settings, then rerun the same isolated test. Do not assume all PhantomJS builds share the same QtWebKit behavior.
