To find out whether a page-load error is actually fatal, open Chrome DevTools before reloading, then check Console, Network, and Issues. Look for uncaught JavaScript exceptions and failed requests, but judge their severity by what stops working: a warning alone does not prove the page is unusable. If the cause is unclear, compare the page in another browser and check whether other sites load.
What counts as a fatal page-load error?
“Fatal” is a practical description, not a universal error category defined by Chrome DevTools. Treat a problem as fatal when it prevents the page’s main content from appearing or stops a feature the reader needs from working. A console message is evidence to investigate; its presence alone does not establish that the page is unusable.
Start with the visible consequence. Is the page blank, is important content missing, or does a required interaction fail? Then connect that symptom to the messages and requests recorded during the load. A warning or browser-detected issue that has no effect on the task may be worth fixing, but it is not necessarily a page-breaking failure.
Capture the page load in Chrome DevTools
- Record the symptom. Note the page URL, the browser, what you expected to see, and what actually happened.
- Open DevTools before reloading. In Chrome, open DevTools and select the Console or Network panel, then reload the page. The Network panel logs activity only while it is open, so opening it after the load will not show the requests from that earlier navigation. See Chrome’s Network panel guide.
- Preserve Console messages across navigation. In the Console, enable Preserve Log before reloading if you need to retain messages across page loads. Console messages are cleared on navigation by default. The option and current panel controls may look different across Chrome versions; see the Console features reference.
- Reload once with the evidence panels ready. Reproduce the problem under the same conditions, then note which Console messages and Network requests appear around the failure.
Read Console errors without overdiagnosing
In Console, look for uncaught JavaScript exceptions, browser-reported network errors, and CORS messages. Note the message, the affected file or URL, and whether it appears during the failing load. Chrome’s documentation shows that quite different problems can appear here: a missing file may produce a 404, while an uncaught TypeError can result from code trying to update a DOM node that is not present. Those clues lead to different investigation paths, not one generic fix. See the Console reference and JavaScript debugging guide.

- Uncaught exception: identify the script and the point in the load when the exception appears. Determine whether it prevents later code or a required interaction from running; do not assume every exception makes the whole page fatal.
- Failed request or missing resource: record the requested URL and status or browser message, then check whether it belongs to the missing content or broken feature.
- CORS message: note the affected request and the browser’s explanation. A CORS message identifies a browser-enforced cross-origin restriction to investigate; it is not, by itself, proof that all page content failed.
Use Console to find error clues, not to decide severity in isolation. The practical test is whether the user-visible failure can be tied to the message.
Use Network to find missing or failed resources
Keep the Network panel open during the reload. Check whether the requests expected for the broken content or feature were made, and inspect the relevant requests’ properties. Chrome describes this panel as a way to see whether resources are uploaded or downloaded and to inspect details such as headers, content, and size. Avoid treating every failed request as fatal: first establish whether the resource is needed for the part of the page that failed.
- Find the requests associated with the missing content or feature.
- Check whether an expected request is absent, or whether a request appears but fails.
- Inspect the relevant request’s available headers, content, and size to narrow down what happened.
- Compare that evidence with the Console message and the visible symptom.
If the Network panel was closed during page load, reload with it open before drawing conclusions. Its log is not a record of activity that occurred before the panel began recording.
Review browser-detected problems in Issues
Open the Issues panel to review problems Chrome has identified and the context and suggested fixes it provides. Issues can link affected resources to other DevTools panels, which helps connect a browser-detected issue to the relevant request or source. If you need to catch issues generated during loading, keep the panel available and reload. Chrome’s Issues guide notes: “Once you’re on the Issues panel, you might want to reload the page to catch even more issues, this time occurring during page load.”

An item in Issues still needs to be judged against the page’s actual failure. Use its context and affected-resource links to investigate; then check whether the main content or required feature is lost.
Decide whether the error is page-breaking
Use a simple impact test rather than the color, wording, or number of messages in DevTools:
- Main content missing or page blank: investigate errors and failed requests that occur during load and relate to the content that should have appeared.
- One required interaction fails: trace the relevant script or resource and determine whether the failure blocks that interaction.
- Page works despite a warning: record the warning if it matters, but do not label the page fatal without a user-visible consequence.
- Part of the page works: describe the failure precisely as degraded or partial, rather than saying the entire page is broken.
This is a practical severity test, not a formal Chrome classification. Describe what a user cannot do, then use the panels to identify evidence that could explain it.
Separate a website problem from a browser or network problem
When the page’s own messages do not make the cause clear, compare the scope of the failure. Does it affect one URL or multiple unrelated sites? Does the same URL fail only in Chrome, or in another browser too? Is the failure a JavaScript exception, a resource request problem, a browser-detected issue, or a general connection or loading error? These comparisons help narrow the layer involved, but they are diagnostic clues rather than a formal classification system.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
- Check other sites. If multiple unrelated sites have loading trouble, investigate the connection or browser environment as well as the original page. Google’s Chrome connection and loading guidance covers checking whether the issue is limited to a site and verifying the connection.
- Try the same page in another browser. If it loads there but not in Chrome, that comparison makes a Chrome-specific cause more plausible; if it fails in both, the website or a broader connection issue remains possible. This comparison does not prove the cause. See Google’s guidance on trying another browser when Chrome crashes or will not open.
- Compare the evidence with the scope. A single failed resource tied to one feature suggests a different path from a general connection error affecting several sites. Keep the observed symptom, browser, and request or exception together when reporting the issue.
Troubleshoot common diagnostic dead ends
The Network panel shows no requests
Likely cause: it was not open while the page loaded, or the page has not been reloaded since it was opened. Fix: open Network before reloading, reproduce the problem, and inspect the requests from that navigation.
Console messages disappear after reload
Likely cause: Console clears messages on navigation by default. Fix: enable Preserve Log before reproducing the issue.
There is an error, but the page appears to work
Likely cause: the message may be non-blocking or affect something other than the task you tested. Fix: identify the affected resource or code and check the main content and required interactions before calling the error fatal.
A resource request failed, but the missing feature is unclear
Likely cause: the request has not yet been connected to the visible symptom. Fix: inspect the request’s properties in Network, check related Console messages, and verify whether the affected resource serves the missing content or feature.

The same page behaves differently across browsers
Likely cause: the problem may depend on the browser, though a comparison alone cannot identify why. Fix: capture the failure and its DevTools evidence in the affected browser, then compare the visible result in the other browser. Report the difference instead of treating it as proof of a specific cause.
Chrome reports “Aw, Snap!” or “This webpage is not available”
These are Chrome Help’s literal descriptions of crash and loading experiences, not a diagnosis of the underlying cause. Follow Google’s connection and loading checks, including checking whether the issue affects other sites and verifying the connection. If Chrome itself crashes or will not open, use its separate crash troubleshooting guidance.
