If you suspect an ammonia leak on a ship, raise the alarm, notify the bridge or responsible officer, evacuate by the vessel’s established route, and muster for accountability. Do not enter the affected space, attempt a rescue, or rely on smell to judge whether the air is safe. Follow the ship’s emergency plan, Safety Management System (SMS), and the master’s or incident commander’s instructions.

How do you detect an ammonia leak on a ship?

Use the vessel’s installed detection and alarm systems, follow the designated response procedure, and report signs of a possible release from a safe location. Ammonia’s sharp smell or irritation to the eyes and lungs is a reason to move away and report—not a reliable way to measure concentration, locate a leak, or confirm that an area is safe.

Detection arrangements depend on where and how ammonia is used. On ships covered by the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) interim ammonia-fuel guidelines, MSC.1/Circ.1687, gas detection is continuous and specified for locations where a leak could occur or vapour could collect. These include fuel-system spaces, secondary enclosures around fuel pipes, relevant machinery and fuel-preparation spaces, bunkering stations, and other relevant enclosed spaces. The guidance also addresses relevant airlocks, ventilation inlets, safe-haven inlets, and tank pressure-relief outlets. Detector locations and numbers should reflect the space’s layout, size, ventilation, and potential accumulation points.

The circular also addresses liquid leak detection in certain fuel spaces and at the lowest point of secondary enclosures around fuel piping. A gas detector is therefore not the only means of detecting a liquid release in covered fuel installations.

What are the ammonia alarm levels on a ship?

The figures below are not interchangeable: IMO’s values are alarm and safety-system triggers for ammonia-fuel installations within the circular’s scope; OSHA’s value is a hazard reference, not a shipboard alarm setting.

Concentration Meaning and scope
110 ppm Under IMO MSC.1/Circ.1687, an audible and visible alarm should activate at this ammonia-vapour concentration in covered ammonia-fuel installations. The circular calls for alarm indication on the bridge, at the continuously manned central control station, and inside and outside the detected space, with local visual indication at affected-space entrances.
220 ppm Under the same interim guideline and scope, the safety system should activate at this concentration, with actions specified in the circular’s table.
300 ppm OSHA identifies this as immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH). It is a hazard reference, not a universal ship alarm threshold.

IMO MSC.1/Circ.1687, dated 26 February 2025, is provisional, goal-based guidance for ships using ammonia as fuel outside the IGC Code scope. Its thresholds and design provisions should not be treated as universal rules for ammonia cargo or refrigeration systems. Check the vessel’s approved arrangements and procedures for the applicable alarm settings.

What should you do if you smell ammonia on a ship?

  1. Raise the alarm and report. Tell the bridge or responsible officer the suspected location and what you observed. Follow the muster list, emergency plan, and SMS; the master or incident commander directs the response.
  2. Move away and evacuate. Use the established escape route to the designated safe location. Keep others away from the suspected area and account for crew and passengers at muster. Do not approach to investigate by smell.
  3. Do not enter or attempt a rescue. Do not send an untrained or unprotected person into an affected enclosed or semi-enclosed space. Entry and rescue are for the designated, authorized response team, with suitable equipment, backup, and command control.
  4. Use only approved remote controls when directed. If the vessel’s approved procedure calls for remote shutdown or isolation, trained personnel should use the designated controls. Do not improvise valve operation or change ventilation: the correct action depends on the system and may affect gas movement, propulsion, or other safety functions.
  5. Follow the reporting chain. Notify external responders and authorities through the vessel’s established arrangements. Contacts and reporting duties depend on the ship, flag, location, and incident; there is no single contact list established for every case.

Can you enter a room with an ammonia leak?

Do not enter a suspected contaminated space unless you are part of the designated, trained, and authorized response team and have the equipment and backup required by the ship’s procedure. Smell, irritation, symptoms, or the absence of visible mist cannot establish that an atmosphere is safe.

OSHA’s ammonia emergency-response guidance calls for positive-pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) when exposure above the IDLH level is possible. It also describes incident-command controls such as identifying hazards, coordinating responders, selecting appropriate protective equipment, providing backup personnel, and limiting the number of responders. Rescue or leak isolation is not an ordinary crew task; follow the ship’s command structure and response plan.

What to do if someone has been exposed

  • Move to clean air only if it is safe to do so. Do not enter an unsafe atmosphere to reach an exposed person; summon the designated response team.
  • Flush skin or eyes immediately. OSHA advises generous clean water after ammonia contact. Its guidance specifies at least 15 minutes of eye irrigation. Seek medical assessment as appropriate and follow the ship’s medical guide and telemedical advice.
  • For inhalation exposure, get medical help. OSHA advises moving the person to uncontaminated air and obtaining medical help for severe exposure. Oxygen should be given only by someone trained and authorized; begin artificial respiration if the person is not breathing, following shipboard medical procedures and professional guidance.

Does the response depend on the source of the ammonia?

Yes. The applicable arrangements depend on whether ammonia is fuel, dangerous-goods cargo, or part of a refrigeration plant.

Possible source Applicable response basis
Ammonia fuel Use the ship’s approved arrangements and emergency plan. IMO MSC.1/Circ.1687 addresses system design, detection, alarms, and safety actions for covered ammonia-fuel installations.
Dangerous-goods cargo Use the ship’s emergency plan and relevant substance schedule under the IMDG Code and IMO Emergency Response Procedures for Ships Carrying Dangerous Goods (EmS) Guide. The response depends on ship type, quantity, packaging, and stowage.
Refrigeration system Follow the vessel’s equipment-specific SMS procedures and emergency plan. OSHA’s ammonia guidance provides general hazard and response principles, not a ship-specific refrigeration procedure.

Ammonia is corrosive to the skin, eyes, and lungs. OSHA gives an approximate flammable range of 15–28% by volume in air and warns of explosion risk in an enclosed space if a release encounters an ignition source. Do not enter or operate equipment in a suspected contaminated space.

Which instructions take precedence?

The ship’s muster arrangements, approved emergency plan and SMS, and directions from the master or incident commander govern the response. IMO’s EmS guidance concerns dangerous goods regulated under the IMDG Code; the ammonia-fuel circular applies to a different system and has a defined scope. A ship’s flag-state, company, equipment, and incident-specific procedures may add requirements. Use the approved vessel documents and responsible safety authority for the particular ship and incident.
