To find out what a website is built with, start with a technology lookup such as Wappalyzer, then verify important results in Chrome DevTools. Check the returned HTML, response headers, scripts, stylesheets, cookies, JavaScript variables, and loaded resources. A detector can reveal public fingerprints, not a guaranteed inventory of every server-side component, so corroborate findings and record when you checked.
What website stack detection can tell you
Technology detection is fingerprinting: tools examine signals a website exposes to visitors and match them to known technologies. Wappalyzer says it inspects source code, HTTP headers, cookies, JavaScript variables, and other signals. Wappalyzer’s guide to detecting website technologies describes these methods.
A lookup may identify a content management system (CMS), ecommerce platform, frontend framework, analytics service, CDN, or other recognizable technology. It cannot reliably reveal every part of a site’s backend. A web server may omit or rewrite headers, scripts may be bundled or renamed, cookies can be customized or blocked, and several technologies may produce similar clues. Treat a result as a hypothesis supported by evidence—not as an authoritative bill of materials.
- Observed: a response header, cookie, script, or other signal you can point to directly.
- Inferred: a technology that likely explains one or more signals but is not explicitly confirmed.
Distinguishing the two is especially useful when documenting a competitor’s site, planning an integration, or assessing a migration.

Start with a technology lookup
- Open Wappalyzer’s website technology lookup and enter the site’s domain.
- Review the categories and detected products it returns, such as CMS, ecommerce, analytics, frameworks, or infrastructure.
- Note the exact site and the date you checked. If you need to investigate sites while browsing, Wappalyzer also offers a browser extension.
- Mark results as unverified until you can match them to evidence on the page.
A lookup is the quickest first pass, but its findings depend on detector signatures and how recently the service scanned the site. It may miss customized, hidden, newly introduced, or server-side components. For important conclusions, inspect the live page yourself.
Verify findings in Chrome DevTools
Chrome’s Network panel records requests while DevTools is open. It can display request headers, responses, cookies, initiators, and timing; its documentation explains the Network panel and the information available for an individual request.
- Open DevTools and capture a fresh load. In Chrome, open the page, open DevTools, select Network, and reload. Requests made before the panel was recording will not appear in that capture.
- Select the main document request. Identify the request for the page itself, usually the site’s domain and path, rather than an image or script request.
- Inspect the headers. In the request details, open Headers. Check response headers such as
serverandx-powered-by, plus cache, CDN, or platform-specific headers. These can suggest infrastructure or software, but may be absent, generic, or rewritten. - Read the response. Open Response to inspect the HTML returned for the document. Search for generator metadata, distinctive asset paths, framework markers, comments, script names, or configuration data. Chrome documents request-level response inspection in its Network panel reference.
- Check cookies and initiators. The request’s Cookies and Initiator tabs can provide context about cookie-based identifiers and which resource caused a request. A cookie name can be customized, so do not treat it alone as proof.
- Review loaded files. In Sources, inspect JavaScript, CSS, and other loaded resources. File names, directory paths, source maps, and third-party domains may point to frameworks, libraries, build systems, analytics, CDNs, or tag managers.
For a wider search, Chrome DevTools can search network headers and responses; use the Network panel’s search controls to look for a distinctive technology name or marker across captured requests.
Read the clues without overclaiming
| Evidence | What it may indicate | What can limit the conclusion |
|---|---|---|
| HTML and DOM | CMS generator tags, component classes, rendered framework traces, or configuration | Markup can be customized, generated at build time, or stripped of identifying details. |
| Response headers | Web server, CDN, cache, or platform clues | Headers can be omitted, normalized, or rewritten. |
| Scripts and asset URLs | Frontend frameworks, libraries, analytics, tag managers, build systems, and hosted services | Bundling, minification, renaming, or proxying can conceal the original tool or make a path ambiguous. |
| Cookies and JavaScript variables | Platform-specific identifiers or client-side libraries | Names may be customized; blocking, consent settings, or browser state may prevent them from appearing. |
| DNS and external domains | Hosting, email, CDN, or third-party service clues | A domain connection does not establish the complete application backend or who operates every component. |
| Lookup results | A fast summary based on known detection signatures | Coverage and freshness depend on signatures and scan timing; verify key results against current page evidence. |
Build a defensible stack inventory
For each technology you record, save the observation and how you reached the conclusion. A compact inventory might include the technology, category, visible signal, confidence, and check date. Avoid turning a single clue into a definitive claim about the site’s architecture.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- High confidence: at least two independent signals support the same identification, or a clear explicit marker is corroborated by another source.
- Medium confidence: one strong signal or multiple weaker clues point to the same technology.
- Low confidence: the conclusion rests on one ambiguous filename, header, cookie, or detector match.
Independence matters: two filenames from the same bundled script are not necessarily two separate confirmations. Stronger corroboration comes from different types of evidence—for example, a recognizable asset path and a matching cookie or HTML marker. Label client-side observations separately from server-side inferences, and record the date because websites can change through redesigns, migrations, and deployments.
Choose between manual inspection and a lookup tool
| Need | Best starting point | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Quick check of one domain | Technology lookup | Fast overview; verify important detections against the current page. |
| See the underlying evidence | Chrome DevTools | Direct inspection of requests, headers, responses, cookies, and loaded files; takes more manual effort. |
| Check sites while browsing | Wappalyzer browser extension | Convenient for one-off browsing; review what evidence supports a result. |
| Automate lookups or use API routes | Wappalyzer API | Wappalyzer documents API access; consult its current product information for availability and plan-dependent limits. |
Wappalyzer documents its API alongside its lookup and extension. Choose an approach based on whether you need a quick answer, evidence you can inspect, repeated or bulk checks, or programmatic output. No accuracy percentage or universal coverage guarantee is established for these methods.

If you need a screenshot to review a page’s visible interface alongside its technology clues, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It captures the rendered page; it does not identify the site’s underlying technology stack. A GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Troubleshooting common detection problems
No technologies appear in a lookup
Try the exact domain and a representative page, then inspect the live page in DevTools. A site may expose few known fingerprints, or its stack may be customized or concealed. An empty result does not prove that the site has no framework or CMS.
A header does not identify the platform
Headers such as server and x-powered-by may be hidden, generic, or rewritten by a CDN or proxy. Check the HTML, cookies, scripts, and asset paths before drawing a conclusion.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
A suspected script or framework is missing
Make sure DevTools was open before you reloaded. Inspect the main document and relevant script requests, then check the Sources panel. Bundling, minification, delayed loading, or third-party hosting can make filenames less recognizable.

The lookup and DevTools disagree
Record both results and their evidence, check that you inspected the same domain and page, and consider scan freshness or a recent site change. Treat the conflicting result as unresolved until a second independent signal supports one explanation.
Cookies or JavaScript markers do not show up
Consent choices, browser settings, extensions, and site configuration can affect client-side signals. Inspect the page in a normal, permitted browsing session and use other evidence rather than assuming the technology is absent.
The site uses several platforms or domains
Inspect the specific page and its requests. A storefront, blog, checkout, and embedded service may use different systems; a third-party domain may indicate an external service, not the site’s entire backend.

A detected stack is a snapshot of visible evidence at a particular time. It is useful for forming questions—what CMS might power the site, what analytics loads, or what assets are served—but it is not a substitute for the site owner’s documentation or access to its source code. For research notes, preserve the URL, date, observed signal, and whether each conclusion is observed or inferred.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I identify a website’s entire backend from its public page?
Usually not. Public fingerprints can reveal clues about technologies, but they do not guarantee a complete inventory of server-side components.
How many signals should support a high-confidence identification?
Use at least two independent signals where possible, and distinguish direct observations from inferences.
Does a missing detector result mean the website uses no CMS or framework?
No. A technology may be customized, concealed, or absent from the detector’s known signatures.
