No single check proves that a bathroom is free of cameras. The most reliable approach is layered: a careful visual inspection first, optional light-based or radio-based tools second, and prompt escalation to the accommodation platform and local authorities if something looks wrong. Each layer catches different things, and each has blind spots, so treat a clean result as reassurance rather than proof.
Start with a visual inspection
A visual check is free, requires no equipment, and is the only method here that does not depend on a device transmitting or having a lens pointed in a particular direction. It is also the method most likely to flag a problem. A security consultant who testified at a 2026 U.S. House hearing said that hidden devices are often installed in addition to a legitimate object, so a duplicate or an oddly placed item deserves a second look even if it appears harmless. The same testimony lists smoke detectors, exit signs, chargers, power strips, and other everyday objects as common disguises. Those examples are reasons to examine an object more closely, not proof that it is a camera. The hearing transcript is the primary source for those remarks.
What to look for
- Duplicates: two smoke detectors, two clocks, or two hooks in a room where one would normally be enough.
- Unusual placement: an object aimed at the toilet, shower, sink, or changing area, or mounted where it has no obvious purpose.
- Newness or mismatch: a fixture whose paint, screws, or wear do not match the surrounding room.
- Power sources: a charger, adapter, or power strip that is plugged in but connected to nothing you use.
- Tiny openings: a pinhole in a smoke detector, tissue box, air vent cover, bathroom fan housing, or towel hook.
- Adjoining areas: check the room next door, a window or skylight with a view in, and any vent that opens into another space.
A simple light check
- Turn off the bathroom lights and close the door.
- Switch on your phone’s flashlight and move it slowly around the room, including the ceiling, vents, and mirror edges.
- Watch for small, unexpected reflections or glints, especially a bright dot that stays fixed as you move the light. Camera lenses often reflect light back toward the source.
- Repeat the check with the lights on, since some lenses reflect less in bright rooms.
A glint is a reason to investigate, not a confirmation. Many ordinary objects reflect light, and a camera with a dark or covered lens may not reflect anything at all.

Consumer detectors and what they can and cannot find
Dedicated lens detectors and radio-frequency (RF) detectors are sold to consumers as aids to the visual check. A 2022 academic paper on wireless spy-camera detection reports that existing commercial RF and lens detection methods can suffer from interference, poor accuracy, and usability problems. Those limits are the reason these tools should supplement a visual inspection rather than replace it. The table below compares the main approaches.

| Approach | What it looks for | Works best when | Known limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visual inspection | Suspicious, duplicated, or newly placed objects; lens openings | The device is in a visible spot and you know what to look for | Cannot prove a room is camera-free; well-disguised devices may look ordinary |
| Light check with a phone flashlight | Reflections from exposed camera lenses | The lens is uncovered and in line of sight | Misses covered or dark lenses; many harmless objects also reflect light |
| Dedicated lens detector | Lens reflections, typically with a specialized light or sensor | The lens is exposed and the device is in view | The 2022 paper reports interference, accuracy, and usability problems with existing commercial lens methods; no particular product was evaluated |
| RF detector | Radio signals from wireless devices | The device is powered and transmitting | The 2022 paper reports interference and accuracy problems with existing commercial RF methods; a device that is off or not transmitting may not register |
| Phone-based Wi-Fi traffic analysis (prototype) | Traffic patterns from certain wireless cameras on Wi-Fi | Not stated for everyday use; the evaluated system was a research prototype | Implemented on Android with custom firmware and tested on 20 types of wireless cameras; not a consumer app |
| Professional technical surveillance countermeasures (TSCM) sweep | Varies by provider and equipment | Not stated in the available sources | No provider, geography, or method was verified; no inspection guarantees that every device will be found |
Two points follow from the table. First, every instrument-based method depends on conditions the reader cannot fully control, such as whether a device is powered, transmitting, or uncovered. Second, a negative reading from any single tool does not establish that the room is clear.
What the 2022 study tested and what it showed
The most detailed public evidence on detection comes from a 2022 paper presented at the Annual Computer Security Applications Conference (ACSAC) and published by the Association for Computing Machinery. The authors describe a system called SCamF that analyzes encrypted Wi-Fi traffic to detect and locate certain wireless spy cameras. The paper’s own summary states: “We have implemented SCamF on Android smartphones and evaluated its performance on a real testbed across 20 types of wireless cameras.” The full paper is the primary source.
The reported results
The paper reports the following experimental values for SCamF on its testbed:

- 【Wide-Area Wireless Scan】Think your meeting is private? In larger meeting rooms or hotel spaces, scanning for hidden devices often takes time as you walk around until a signal becomes clear. As your camera detector spy camera finder, its extendable antenna helps steady RF pickup, giving a better sense of direction in wide areas. With adjustable sensitivity, you can avoid missing WiFi cameras. And for non-WiFi pin-hole cameras, the infrared scan reveals disguised tools like a prepared privacy pen.
- 【Infrared Scan】Ever wonder what’s watching you in a new hotel room? Tiny pin-hole cameras can hide in smoke detectors, clothing hooks, chargers, or fixtures you’d never notice. In a completely dark room, the infrared scan in this camera finder hidden camera detector makes hidden lenses reflect as a bright spot—revealing what the eye can’t see. Sweep mirrors, vents, picture frames, chargers, and wall fixtures; it also works as a hidden bug and camera detector to give you peace of mind before you settle in.
- 【Anti-Theft Alarm Mode】Don’t Let Danger Catch You Off Guard. While you’re asleep in a hotel room, hang this anti spy detector on the door handle—any attempt to open the door triggers an instant alert, waking you before someone gets close. And when you’re out and your luggage isn’t always in sight, attaching it to your suitcase adds protection; even slight movement sets off a loud alarm to alert you to theft. Paired with your hidden camera finder, it keeps you aware and protected wherever you go.
- 【Anti-GPS Tracking Scan】Is your car truly safe? GPS trackers can cling to your car with magnets and quietly send out your location. As your gps tracker detector, this device detects the magnetic fields where a tracker is attached and the signals its rf detector picks up when your location is shared. Sweep hiding spots—under seats, along bumpers, near the inside edge of tires. Before you drive, this spy camera detector helps you catch hidden trackers early and avoid someone following you.
- 【Pocket-Size & Long Battery Life】Every hotel room and office you enter should feel safe. With up to 25 hours of battery life and a true pocket-size build, this device stays ready all day—no hunting for outlets during trips or long workdays. Use it as your bug detector & camera finder, recording device detector, or privacy pen hidden camera detector. Slip it into your pocket for hidden camera detectors for travel, quick hotel scans, or fast checks of unfamiliar offices—giving you steady peace of mind wherever you go.
- 0.98 wireless-camera classification accuracy.
- 0.97 true positive rate for detecting spy cameras among devices classified as wireless cameras.
- A false-positive rate of 0 for non-camera devices.
- A false-positive rate of 0.031 for cameras that were not recording user activity.
These are results from one prototype on one testbed, and they are not product guarantees. They also describe wireless cameras that transmit over Wi-Fi, so they say nothing about wired cameras, cameras on other networks, or cameras that store footage locally and never transmit.
What the study does not show
The study does not show that an ordinary phone app, a flashlight, or a selfie camera will detect hidden cameras. It was built on custom firmware, and the evaluation covers only the device types in its testbed. Readers should treat it as evidence that network-based detection is possible under specific conditions, not as a method they can run tonight.
If you find a suspicious device
The main risk at this stage is damaging evidence or property, or escalating a situation you do not fully understand. The following sequence is practical guidance based on the points above, and the core instruction against damage comes from a U.S. security consultant’s testimony.

- Do not touch, unplug, or remove it unless immediate safety requires action. Testimony from security consultant Michael LaSorsa at the 2026 U.S. House hearing states: “I do not recommend that you damage or completely remove anybody’s personal property from a rented property.”
- Photograph it in place from several angles, including the surrounding room, so its location is clear.
- Note the room, the time, and what you noticed while the details are fresh.
- Leave the bathroom or accommodation if you feel unsafe or if you are unsure whether the device is recording.
- Report it to the accommodation platform, the host or property manager, and local police. Ask police how to preserve your photographs and notes.
Platform rules for rentals
Rental platforms set their own rules, and those rules apply regardless of what the law says in a given place. Canadian privacy regulators reported on March 13, 2024 that Airbnb’s revised global policy, effective April 30, 2024, prohibits indoor security cameras in all Airbnb listing types. The same statement says hosts must disclose decibel monitors and sets additional rules for outdoor cameras. The regulators’ statement is the primary source for these terms.
The regulators also said: “Where people live or stay, including rental accommodations, are places where we expect a high level of privacy.” The platform policy is the enforceable rule for Airbnb listings, but it does not describe every rental service, and it is not a statement of law.
Legal context and where it stops
In the United States, 18 U.S.C. § 1801 is a federal video-voyeurism provision. It covers intentional and knowing capture of defined private areas without consent, under circumstances where the person has a reasonable expectation of privacy, within the statute’s special maritime and territorial jurisdiction. The 2022 edition of the statute defines the private areas and privacy circumstances it covers. This section does not describe state, local, or international law, and it does not decide any particular case.
Rank #4
Readers outside the United States, or in a U.S. state with its own statutes, need to check the rules that apply where they are. The most useful first contact for a suspected recording is local police, who can explain which laws apply and what evidence to keep.
What the available figures do and do not show
No reliable prevalence rate for hidden cameras in bathrooms is established by the sources reviewed for this article. A legislator told the 2026 U.S. House hearing that Airbnb had received more than 35,000 surveillance-device reports by 2024. That is a statement made at a hearing, not an independently verified statistic, and it should not be read as a rate of hidden cameras in rentals. Reports to a platform also do not show how many devices were found, how many were confirmed, or how many were never reported.
When to consider a professional sweep
If the visual check raises concerns, or if you have reason to think a device is present and cannot be found, a professional TSCM inspection is an option. TSCM providers use specialized equipment to look for surveillance devices, and some combine several methods. The available sources do not establish which providers are reliable, how their methods compare, or what they cost, and no inspection can guarantee that every device will be found. A sweep is best understood as one more layer of screening, alongside reporting the device and involving police where a recording may exist.
