Design the notes app around a durable copy on the user’s device: reading and editing should work locally, and synchronization should reconcile changes when a connection returns. Treat the landing page as a separate, static project: hand-authored HTML and CSS can be published without a bundler, but GitHub Pages’ branch-based publishing uses Jekyll by default, so a strict zero-build-tools setup must account for that behavior.
Start with the data contract, not the sync library
Before choosing a storage format or sync engine, decide what a note contains and what counts as a conflict. A plain-text note has different merge needs from a document made of formatted blocks, attachments, and metadata. Also decide whether the app is for one person using several devices or for multiple people editing together; those are different collaboration requirements.
Write down the rules for notes and deletion
- List the fields that can change independently, such as title, body, tags, and modified time.
- Decide whether formatting, attachments, or block-level editing are in scope.
- Define deletion behavior. If one device deletes a note while another offline device edits an older copy, decide whether deletion wins, the edit restores the note, or the app preserves both for review.
- Specify what users should see when two edits overlap: an automatic merge, version history, a choice between copies, or a documented deterministic rule.
These are product decisions rather than outcomes a sync library can make on your behalf. Make them explicit before implementation.
Make local use independent of the network
In a local-first design, the on-device copy is primary for ordinary reading and editing. The app should not wait for a server round trip before showing a note or accepting a change. Automerge’s official introduction describes independent offline edits followed by synchronization when a connection returns.

For a browser app, offline readiness has two distinct parts: the app’s interface resources must be available, and note data must be durably stored. Yjs documents an IndexedDB provider for persisting document updates; its offline guide also describes service workers as a way to persist the application shell, including HTML, JavaScript, and CSS. Caching the shell does not preserve note edits, and storing note data does not by itself make the interface load offline.
Design a visible save and sync state
Make the local save boundary clear to the user. For example, distinguish a change saved on this device from one synchronized to the account’s other devices. That distinction follows directly from the architecture: local editing can succeed while a remote update is still pending. If persistence fails, do not present the edit as safely saved; provide a useful error or recovery path rather than silently treating it as synced.

Plan for restart behavior as part of offline support. An edit that exists only in memory is not a dependable offline edit if the browser or app closes before synchronization.
Choose conflict behavior to match the content
Reconnection is a reconciliation problem: the client must determine what to do when its local state differs from the network’s state. Android Developers’ Build an offline-first app says, “If, when offline, the app writes data locally that is misaligned with the network data source, you must resolve the conflict before synchronization can happen.” Version metadata and an explicit policy are therefore part of the design, not an optional polish step.

Last-write-wins is one possible policy. Android’s offline-first guidance describes version metadata and last-write-wins as a common strategy. It can suit fields where the latest value is intended to replace the older one, but applying it to an entire freeform note body can discard a meaningful concurrent edit. That risk is a consequence of accepting one timestamped value over another, not a measured evaluation of this proposed app.
Compare the approaches by fit, not by an unsupported ranking

These are candidates, not a benchmark-based ranking. The cited documentation does not establish an apples-to-apples performance comparison or identify a winning library for an unspecified product. “Automatic merge” also does not mean every merged result matches user intent: Automerge specifically cautions that simultaneous edits to the same property may have no well-defined resolution.

Choose sync ownership after defining account needs
Automerge describes use with a centralized server, while Yjs describes network-agnostic transports. Those capabilities leave important product choices open: who owns the sync service, how devices authenticate, and what happens when a device returns after a long period offline. The cited sources do not provide a current cost or reliability comparison between operating a backend and using a hosted sync service, so decide from the app’s requirements rather than assumed savings.

- Edit a note on one device with no connection, then reconnect and verify the update reaches the other device.
- Edit different notes on two devices, then sync and confirm neither change is lost.
- Edit the same note body on two devices while offline; verify whether the app merges, keeps both versions, asks the user, or follows its stated deterministic rule.
- Delete a note on one device while editing it on another; check the behavior against the deletion rule.
- Make an offline change, restart the app before syncing, and verify whether the change remains available.
- Make synchronization fail once, then restore connectivity and confirm that retrying does not duplicate or discard changes.
- Reconnect an older device after a long interval and verify how its stale copy is reconciled.
Record the expected outcome for each case. A deterministic result is not necessarily a good result if it silently discards work; the important point is that the behavior is intentional and understandable.
Build the landing page as a separate static site
The marketing page does not need the app’s persistence or synchronization machinery. A small set of hand-authored HTML and CSS files—and plain JavaScript only if needed—can remain free of a framework and bundler. Keeping this page separate in purpose also avoids confusing a fast, static product introduction with the offline-capable application itself.
GitHub Docs says, “GitHub Pages publishes static files that you push to your repository.” It also documents branch publishing, with Jekyll used by default in that workflow. That default matters: a repository of plain files is not automatically a zero-build-tools deployment if the publishing path invokes Jekyll.
- Create the landing page from static files in the repository; do not add a build step unless the page actually needs one.
- Configure GitHub Pages to publish from a branch, following the current Pages settings and documentation for the repository.
- Account for the default Jekyll behavior using GitHub’s supported no-Jekyll path where appropriate.
- Confirm the published result and current behavior after configuration; do not assume that a static source folder alone disables Jekyll.
The no-build constraint applies to the landing-page publishing process. It does not remove the separate requirements of an offline notes app: a usable cached shell, durable local note storage, and logic to exchange and reconcile changes when a connection returns.
