You can make an initial startup logo online at no cost with Canva or Adobe Express: define the idea, build a simple wordmark or symbol, test a few versions, and export a transparent PNG for web use. But free creation does not guarantee an exclusive design, trademark eligibility, or a scalable vector file. Check the exact asset terms and export options before making the logo your permanent brand mark.

Choose a free logo workflow

Canva and Adobe Express both document free logo-making workflows. Canva lets you start from a template or blank design, add text and icons, customize colors, and collaborate by sharing a link. Adobe Express asks for a business name and optional slogan, then guides you through a style and icon choice before customization and download. Features and free-tier limits can change, so confirm current download options in the tool before you begin.

Tool Documented workflow and exports Key trade-off
Canva Template-based or blank-canvas design, color and text customization, collaboration, and PNG export. Canva’s logo maker describes the workflow. Canva says reusable stock graphics and customizable templates are non-exclusive, which can limit their suitability for an exclusive trademark logo. See its trademark guidance.
Adobe Express Name and optional slogan, style and icon selection, customization, and PNG or JPG downloads, including transparent PNG variations. Its logo maker also recommends a square canvas for common uses such as profile images. Check the rights and terms for each asset you use, as well as current plan details. Adobe describes 1200 × 1200 px as a usual logo-template size, not a universal requirement.
Wix Logo Maker Wix lists a free low-resolution JPG sample; paid plans list high-resolution PNG, and some list SVG. Its logo plans specify plan exports. Wix says purchased logos include commercial-use rights, but it does not guarantee uniqueness or trademark registration. Review its ownership and trademark guidance.

Compare the download cost, file type and resolution, asset terms, editing and collaboration features, and whether the design works at small sizes and in print. Commercial-use permission is not the same as exclusive ownership or a guarantee that a mark can be registered.

Design the logo in a few deliberate passes

1. Define the idea before opening a template

Write down what the startup offers, who it serves, and the impression the logo should convey. A short list of descriptive words or a small mood board can help you choose type and imagery that fit the business rather than simply selecting the first attractive template. Adobe’s logo design advice recommends considering the business and industry, choosing suitable fonts, and keeping the design simple.

2. Start with a wordmark or simple symbol

Begin with the business name in a readable type treatment. Add a simple symbol only if it strengthens the idea. Test the name at a small size before adding detail or a tagline: if it becomes hard to read as a profile image, the design needs simplifying. Canva’s logo guide emphasizes simplicity, recognition, memorability, scalability, and versatility across online and print uses.

3. Customize, then make a small set of variants

Try a restrained color palette and one or two type treatments. Save a one-color version as well as a full-color version, and compare versions with and without a tagline. A square 1:1 canvas is useful for common placements such as profile images and business cards; Adobe identifies 1200 × 1200 px as a usual size for its logo templates, but that is platform guidance rather than a universal specification.

4. Export for the actual use

For a website or other digital placement, a transparent PNG is useful because it can sit over different backgrounds. Canva documents PNG export for web use, and Adobe offers PNG and JPG downloads, including transparent PNG variations. If you expect large-format printing or need artwork that can scale cleanly, check whether the plan provides SVG or another vector format before committing to the design. Wix lists SVG on some paid plans, while its free sample is a low-resolution JPG.

Check design rights before adopting the logo

The tool name alone does not determine what rights you have: the terms depend on the components used and the applicable license. Canva says its stock images and graphics are licensed non-exclusively and that reusable, customizable templates cannot be trademarked as exclusive logos. It says a logo made from scratch may use free fonts and basic shapes or lines, or you can upload an original design. Review Canva’s current trademark guidance for the specific elements in your design.

Wix says commercial rights are included with purchased logos, but it cannot guarantee that a logo is unique or that it can be registered as a trademark. Those are separate questions: permission to use a design commercially does not establish that no one else uses a similar mark or that a trademark office will register it. Wix explains this distinction in its ownership and trademarks guidance.

Search the name and mark before a major rollout

For a U.S. startup, the USPTO’s Trademark Basics resources explain how to search for similar marks and learn about the federal application process. The page, updated August 4, 2026, is a starting point—not clearance for a particular name or logo. If the mark will anchor a consequential launch, get advice from a trademark professional before investing heavily in signage, packaging, or a broader brand rollout.

What “free” does—and does not—cover

  • Creating a draft: Canva and Adobe Express document free online logo workflows.
  • Getting a usable web file: A transparent PNG can work for many digital placements, but check the current export options and plan limits.
  • Getting scalable artwork: Vector formats such as SVG are useful when a logo must scale for print; availability may depend on a paid plan.
  • Using it commercially: Check the license for every font, icon, graphic, and template in the design.
  • Owning an exclusive, registrable mark: A free download or commercial-use permission does not guarantee exclusivity or trademark eligibility.
