Use transparent image files for graphics, adapt the composition for vertical viewing if needed, then preview it at the size and on the devices your viewers will use.
1. Decide what the overlay needs to do
Start with the content viewers came to see: gameplay, a presentation, or the camera. Add only elements that help identify the stream or make it easier to follow, such as a webcam frame, a name bar, or a brief status label. Empty space does not need to be filled.
Write down the few elements you intend to include and rank them by importance. The main content should occupy the dominant area; decorative effects and labels should remain secondary.
2. Choose the canvas and viewing format
For common horizontal layouts, OBS recommends a 16:9 canvas, giving 1920×1080 and 1280×720 as examples in its Aspect Ratio Guide. These are examples, not a universal requirement: choose dimensions that match your intended output and production setup.

If you plan to stream vertically as well, make a portrait composition rather than assuming a horizontal scene will simply fit. Twitch’s dual-format guidance recommends adapting selected scenes, centering important visuals, considering safe zones, and testing on a mobile device. The available guidance does not establish exact safe-zone pixel measurements, so inspect the current platform interface instead of relying on a guessed margin.
3. Plan the visual hierarchy
Sketch where each element will sit before creating the graphics. Keep the center and other high-action areas clear. A camera frame, name bar, or social bar can sit near an edge if it remains legible and does not cover important content. Elgato describes social bars as commonly horizontal and notes that they can be placed at the top, bottom, or sides.

- Use a limited palette: choose a small set of colors that remains distinct from the game or presentation.
- Check contrast: text and icons should be easy to distinguish from both the overlay and the moving image behind them.
- Keep typography restrained: use readable labels rather than several competing type styles or effects.
- Account for the player: overlay graphics use viewer screen space and can conflict with player controls. Twitch’s design guidance concerns Twitch extensions specifically, but the screen-space warning is also useful when composing a stream scene.
4. Prepare the overlay assets
Use file formats that preserve the transparency your design needs. Elgato’s OBS overlay guidance recommends PNG for static transparent graphics and WEBM for animated graphics with transparency.
Choose a webcam frame shape to match the camera composition: widescreen, 4:3, vertical, or square. If the opening is not rectangular, use a mask so the camera image fits the intended shape without spilling across the frame. Avoid adding a frame that makes the camera harder to see.

5. Build and order the scene in OBS
- Create a scene: In OBS, add a scene for the layout you are designing. The OBS BRB screen tutorial demonstrates the basic image-and-text workflow.
- Add the background and content sources: Add your background or captured video/game source, then add the overlay image, text, and camera sources you need.
- Position and resize in the preview: Select each source and adjust it in the OBS preview. Check the canvas edges for clipping and make sure labels remain readable.
- Set the layer order: OBS displays sources higher in the source list in front of those below. Put backgrounds behind captured content, then place foreground frames and labels above the sources they should cover.
- Check the camera opening: Confirm the camera is visible within its frame and that the frame is not covering the game or presentation.
Do not use stretching as the default way to make a mismatched image fill the canvas. OBS warns that stretching can distort or blur an image. Scaling or cropping may preserve the image better, but cropping removes part of the source.
6. Preview the finished overlay in context
Inspect the complete scene rather than judging each graphic in a design app. Look for small text, weak contrast, accidental coverage of important action, and elements too close to the canvas edge. For vertical scenes, check the adapted layout on a mobile device and account for platform interface elements.

Before going live, YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement, choosing a stream quality your connection can reliably support, and monitoring stream health. These are general stream checks rather than an overlay-specific certification; they help reveal whether the composed scene remains readable and stable under realistic conditions.
