To deploy a PHP application with Deployer, create a recipe, configure an SSH-accessible host and deployment path, then run dep deploy. The official Deployer 8.x workflow also offers an optional provisioning task for new Ubuntu servers; it is not required when your web server is already configured.
Check your Deployer version and requirements
Deployer recipes are executable deployment instructions: they define hosts, tasks and any imported recipes. Before adopting commands or code from a guide, check which major version you have installed. Deployer’s 7.x-to-8.x upgrade notes require PHP 8.3 or later and Symfony 7.4+ or 8.0+ components. They also document API changes, including named arguments replacing the run() options array and changes to parameter names. See the Deployer 7.x to 8.x upgrade guide.
Install Deployer using the method documented for your chosen version. Then, from your application project, run dep init. The 8.x guide says initialization creates a recipe as either deploy.php or deploy.yaml. Review the generated file and adapt it to your application rather than assuming initialization has configured a production-ready deployment. See Deployer’s getting-started guide.
Choose whether to provision a server
Provisioning is an optional setup path for a new server, not a prerequisite for deploying with Deployer. The official provisioning example targets Ubuntu and uses dep provision; it requires SSH access. Do not assume that this recipe applies unchanged to other Linux distributions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The guide names Linode, DigitalOcean, Vultr, AWS and Google Cloud as examples of VPS providers. These are examples, not endorsements or a requirement to use a particular provider. If your web server is already configured, skip provisioning and configure the host in your recipe instead. Details are in Deployer’s setup guide.
Configure the deployment host
A host definition needs to identify the remote SSH user and the deployment path. For example, the official guide uses the remote_user and deploy_path settings. Adapt the values to your account and server; do not copy example values as if they were universal.

Keep private SSH key details in your local SSH configuration, not in a recipe committed with application code. The guide shows SSH identity configuration separately from the deployment recipe. Confirm that the account can connect to the server and access the target path before running a deployment.
Run a deployment safely
- Review the recipe: Check its host definitions, tasks, imported recipes and any commands that will run remotely.
- Select the intended host or hosts: Deployer runs tasks on the hosts selected by the recipe. If several hosts are selected, tasks run in parallel by default. Use
--limitwhen you need to constrain parallelism or target a smaller set of hosts; see Deployer’s basics guide. - Start the deployment: Run
dep deployfrom the project directory. The recipe determines which hosts receive the deployment and which tasks run.
Because a recipe can execute commands on remote machines, inspect the selected hosts and task sequence before running it against production. A successful command invocation is not, by itself, proof that the application is serving correctly; check the resulting site and your application’s health signals.

Understand releases and persistent files
The documented deployment layout separates versioned releases from persistent data. A releases directory holds release copies, a shared directory holds files that persist between releases, and a current symlink points to the active release. Configure the web server’s document root to the correct public directory for your application. In the guide’s Nginx example, that path is current/public; its Ubuntu provision recipe configures Caddy automatically. Web-server details depend on your environment, so verify the document root and server configuration rather than assuming either example matches your setup.
Deployer’s homepage describes its release switch as “Atomic symlink switching. Your users never see a broken state. If something goes wrong, rollback in one command.” This is Deployer’s product description, not an independently tested guarantee. Make sure you understand the release and rollback behavior of your own recipe before relying on it.

Add build and framework-specific tasks carefully
Many applications need extra steps, such as building assets or preparing writable directories. The getting-started guide demonstrates adding a build task after code update. Use hooks to place such work at the appropriate point in the task sequence, and verify what each task does before running it on a live server.
Framework recipes can provide a starting point, but their paths and task order are application-specific. Deployer’s Laravel recipe includes tasks for updating code, handling shared and writable paths, installing vendors, running migrations, publishing the release and cleaning up. It identifies .env and storage as shared paths and specifies writable directories; do not copy those settings blindly into a different framework or application. Inspect the Deployer framework and upgrade documentation and confirm your own application’s persistence, permissions and migration requirements.
