Deploy Paperclip on an Oracle Cloud ARM Linux VPS by connecting the server to Coolify over SSH, then deploying Paperclip’s ARM64-compatible Docker setup with persistent storage and a Coolify-managed domain. Keep Paperclip’s default app port, 3100, off the public internet; route web traffic through Coolify’s reverse proxy instead.
Before you start
You need an Oracle Cloud Linux server with an ARM64 architecture, SSH access, a domain you can point to the server, and a Coolify instance. Paperclip’s Docker workflow is a better fit for Coolify than installing its runtime directly on the host: it avoids setting up Node.js and pnpm on the VPS and lets Coolify manage deployment through Docker.
For Coolify itself, the documented self-hosting minimum is 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM, and 10 GB of free disk space (Coolify server requirements). That is a platform minimum, not a sizing recommendation or workload guarantee for Paperclip, PostgreSQL, builds, or agents running on the same machine. Paperclip’s installation guide separately gives 1 vCPU and 2 GB RAM as a starting point for its VPS path; that figure is not a validated sizing recommendation for the combined Oracle ARM and Coolify setup (Paperclip installation guide).

Choose where Coolify and Paperclip will run
For a first deployment, Coolify and Paperclip can share one Oracle VM. This is simpler to administer, but both consume the same CPU, memory, and disk. Builds or agent activity can compete with the Coolify dashboard and Paperclip’s database.
For a more isolated production arrangement, Coolify can manage a remote deployment server, keeping the control plane separate from the machine running Paperclip. This adds setup and infrastructure complexity, but reduces resource contention between the dashboard and application workloads. Coolify documents deploying resources to a remote server as an option for production isolation (Coolify server introduction).

Connect the Oracle ARM server to Coolify
Coolify connects to the target server over SSH and runs Docker operations there. Oracle Linux images commonly have root SSH login disabled by default, and Oracle ARM instances have a firewall enabled by default. Coolify’s Oracle ARM instructions describe configuring root SSH key access or using a non-root account with passwordless sudo; the latter route is marked experimental in Coolify’s documentation (Coolify’s Oracle server guidance).
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm SSH access. From your Coolify host, ensure the server is reachable over SSH using the intended account and key. Follow Coolify’s current Oracle instructions for configuring root-key access or its experimental non-root, passwordless-sudo alternative.
- Review both firewall layers. Allow SSH and the inbound web traffic needed for your chosen Coolify proxy and domain setup in the Oracle network rules and the server firewall. The exact ingress rules depend on your topology; use Coolify’s current firewall requirements and Oracle’s network configuration rather than assuming that opening the Paperclip app port is necessary.
- Add the server in Coolify. In Coolify, add the Oracle VM as a server, enter the SSH connection details, and run its connection or validation check. Do not proceed until Coolify can connect and perform its Docker operations.
Deploy Paperclip with Docker
Paperclip’s official Docker guide provides a Compose quickstart with port 3100 as the default and configurable port and data directory. It also documents a fuller stack using PostgreSQL and persistent data (Paperclip Docker deployment guide). Its standard production Docker target publishes Linux AMD64 and ARM64 images, making the documented Docker workflow suitable for an ARM64 host; confirm that the image tag and Compose configuration you select still support ARM64.

- Create a Paperclip resource in Coolify. Select the Paperclip Docker or Compose deployment path and provide the project’s supported Compose configuration. Use the official Paperclip Docker instructions as the source for the current configuration rather than relying on an older copied example.
- Check the image architecture. Verify that the image and tag resolve to a Linux ARM64 image. A compatible multi-architecture tag is needed; an AMD64-only image will not run natively on the Oracle ARM server.
- Choose the deployment mode. Use the quickstart for a simpler setup, or the documented PostgreSQL-backed stack when you want the full database arrangement. Keep the selected Compose services and their environment settings consistent with Paperclip’s current instructions.
- Configure persistent storage. Map Paperclip’s configured data directory to persistent storage in Coolify. If using PostgreSQL, also persist its database data directory. Container filesystems are not a substitute for persistent volumes: without them, replacing or recreating containers can remove application or database data.
- Deploy and check the logs. Start the resource in Coolify and review the deployment and runtime logs for image-pull, architecture, database, or permission errors. Confirm Paperclip becomes healthy before configuring public access.
Configure a domain and keep port 3100 private
Do not expose Paperclip’s app port 3100 directly to the internet. Paperclip’s VPS instructions use a domain and HTTP/HTTPS for public web access while keeping the application behind a proxy (Paperclip VPS deployment guide). In a Coolify deployment, configure the domain and public routing through Coolify’s reverse proxy on the server hosting the Paperclip resource; do not copy the separate Nginx steps from Paperclip’s VPS walkthrough as if Coolify required them (Coolify proxy documentation).
- Point DNS to the workload server. Create the DNS record for the domain or subdomain you will use and direct it to the public address of the server running Paperclip.
- Set the domain in Coolify. Open the Paperclip resource’s domain or networking settings and configure its public domain and the application’s internal listening port, using the current Coolify UI labels and Paperclip configuration.
- Allow proxy traffic. Ensure Oracle network rules and the server firewall allow the HTTP/HTTPS traffic required by your Coolify proxy and certificate setup. Keep port 3100 private rather than adding a public ingress rule for it.
- Validate access. After DNS resolves and Coolify has configured routing and HTTPS, open the domain and confirm the Paperclip interface loads over HTTPS.
Secure credentials and plan for recovery
Configure model-provider credentials through Paperclip’s supported settings or Coolify’s secrets/environment configuration, as appropriate for the current deployment. Do not commit API keys to a public Compose file or expose them in a public repository. Paperclip’s installation materials discuss provider credentials, but provider availability and adapter support can change; confirm the current options in its documentation before choosing one.
Back up the persistent Paperclip data and, when applicable, PostgreSQL data. The Docker documentation identifies the data that should persist, but does not prescribe an Oracle-specific backup schedule or retention policy. Decide how often to back up, where to store backups outside the VM, and how to test restoring them before relying on the installation.

Quick Recap
Docker through Coolify or direct VPS installation?
| Consideration | Docker through Coolify | Direct VPS installation |
|---|---|---|
| Host setup | Uses Docker/Compose; avoids installing Node.js and pnpm directly on the host, according to Paperclip’s Docker guide (source). | Uses Paperclip’s direct installation path, which has Node.js and pnpm requirements (source). |
| Deployment management | Coolify connects over SSH and manages Docker operations on the server (source). | Follow Paperclip’s VPS installation instructions and manage the application using that workflow (source). |
| Public proxy | Configure the resource’s domain and use Coolify’s proxy on the workload server (source). | Paperclip’s VPS guide includes its own domain and Nginx-oriented setup (source). |
| Persistence | Configure persistent storage for Paperclip data and PostgreSQL data when using the full stack (source). | Follow the direct-install guide’s storage and service instructions (source). |
| Upgrade workflow | Deploy through Coolify using the current Paperclip Docker/Compose configuration; the cited Docker documentation does not state a universal upgrade schedule. | Use the direct-install workflow; the cited VPS documentation does not state a universal upgrade schedule. |
Troubleshoot common deployment failures
- Coolify cannot connect: verify the SSH key, username, SSH reachability, and Oracle and host firewall rules. If using the non-root route, check that passwordless sudo is configured as Coolify requires.
- Docker reports an image or platform error: check that the selected image tag includes Linux ARM64 support and that the resource is not pinned to an AMD64-only image.
- Paperclip is unreachable at its domain: check DNS, the domain configured in Coolify, proxy status, and HTTP/HTTPS ingress. Do not solve a proxy problem by exposing port 3100 publicly.
- Data disappears after redeployment: inspect the resource’s volume mappings and confirm they point to persistent storage for Paperclip and, if used, PostgreSQL.
- The VM runs out of resources: review memory, CPU, and disk use across Coolify, Paperclip, PostgreSQL, builds, and agents. Coolify’s minimum host specification does not guarantee adequate capacity for this combined workload.
