To delete a sent message on Facebook Messenger for everyone, open the conversation, open the individual message’s options, choose Delete, and select Delete for everyone. On mobile, press and hold the message; on messenger.com, hover over it. Choose Delete for you only to remove your copy.

Messenger’s labels and icon placement can vary by app version. Some interfaces may still use Remove or Unsend, but the important distinction is whether the message is removed for everyone or only from your own view.

Key takeaways

  • Delete for everyone removes a sent message from the other participants’ normal Messenger chat views.
  • Delete for you removes only your copy; everyone else can still see the message.
  • Deleting a message cannot undo a recipient seeing it, copying it, taking a screenshot, or reading an already-viewed notification.
  • Deleting the whole chat affects your inbox only, while archiving merely hides the conversation and preserves its message history.
  • Messenger lets you edit a sent message for up to 15 minutes; edited messages can show edit history and may be edited up to 5 times.

How do you delete a sent message on Facebook Messenger?

To delete a sent message on Facebook Messenger for everyone, open the conversation, open the options for the individual message, choose Delete, and select Delete for everyone. On a phone or tablet, press and hold the message; on messenger.com, hover over it and open its options. Meta’s current instructions are documented in its Messenger Help Center.

Do not delete the entire conversation if your goal is to remove one message from both sides. Conversation deletion removes the chat from your own inbox, not from the other participant’s inbox.

How do you delete a Messenger message on an iPhone, iPad, or Android device?

On mobile, delete the individual sent message rather than the whole conversation:

  1. Open the Messenger app and open the relevant conversation.
  2. Find the message that you sent.
  3. Press and hold the message, or open the message’s options control.
  4. Choose Delete.
  5. Choose Delete for everyone to remove the message from the other participants’ normal chat views, or choose Delete for you to remove only your copy.

Messenger’s icons and the exact position of the options control can vary by app version and device. The action labels are more reliable than instructions such as “tap the three dots in the top-right corner.” Meta may also display Remove or Unsend in some places while its terminology changes. The underlying choice is whether to remove the message for everyone or only for yourself.

How do you delete a Messenger message on a computer?

On messenger.com, delete an individual sent message by opening the chat, hovering over the message, opening the message options, choosing Delete, and selecting Delete for you or Delete for everyone.

  1. Open Messenger and open the conversation.
  2. Hover over the message you sent.
  3. Click the message options control.
  4. Click Delete.
  5. Choose Delete for everyone or Delete for you.

If the options menu does not appear, move the pointer directly over the message and try the message-specific control again. Selecting the conversation’s general menu instead can expose chat-management options rather than the control for deleting one sent message.

What is the difference between Delete for everyone and Delete for you?

Delete for everyone removes the sent message from the other participants’ normal chat views, while Delete for you removes only your own view of the message. The two choices are not interchangeable.

Messenger action Who loses the normal chat view? What happens to the conversation? Best use
Delete for everyone Other participants, as well as you The selected sent message is removed from the applicable chat views You want the sent message removed from the conversation for all participants
Delete for you Only you Other participants retain their copies You no longer want to see your own copy
Delete the whole chat Only you The conversation is removed from your inbox; the other person’s copy remains You want to clear your own inbox, not retract one message
Archive No one loses the history The conversation is hidden from your chat list but its history remains You want to tidy your inbox without deleting messages
Edit No one loses the conversation The original message remains represented by a revised version and can expose edit history You want to correct wording instead of removing the message

Can someone still see a Messenger message after you delete it?

Yes. A recipient may have already seen the message before you deleted it. Meta states, People may have already seen your message before you deleted it. Deleting for everyone changes what normally appears in the chat; it does not erase something a person already read or retained.

  • A recipient may have read the message before deletion.
  • A screenshot or a copied version is not removed when the Messenger message is deleted.
  • A notification that was already viewed cannot be made unread or unseen by deleting the message.
  • A person may remember the message even after it disappears from the chat.

Meta also says that a downloaded copy of Facebook data can show that messages were deleted, but not what the deleted messages said. In a reported conversation, Meta may review deleted-message content when the report is made within 14 days of deletion, or within 6 hours for end-to-end encrypted chats. These rules do not make deleted content visible again to ordinary chat participants; they describe limited data and reporting situations documented by Meta in its Messenger Help Center.

Why can you only delete a Messenger message for yourself?

If Messenger offers only Delete for you, the account, message type, conversation state, or current app interface may not provide the everyone-removal option at that moment. Meta’s interface and labels can vary by platform and app version, so first confirm that you opened the options for the individual message you sent rather than the conversation menu.

Try these checks:

  1. Open the message-specific menu by pressing and holding the message on mobile or hovering over it on messenger.com.
  2. Look for Delete, Remove, or Unsend, because Meta has used all of these labels during terminology changes.
  3. Confirm that the message is yours. A participant cannot retract another person’s sent message from everyone’s chat view.
  4. Update or reopen Messenger and repeat the message-specific action if the menu appears incomplete.
  5. If only Delete for you remains available, do not assume that deleting the full chat will remove the other participant’s copy. It will not.

Because Meta’s help documentation and app controls can change, the safest instruction is to follow the exact choices Messenger presents after selecting the individual sent message. Meta’s documented sequence and current labels are covered in its official deletion instructions.

Should you edit a Messenger message instead of deleting it?

Edit a Messenger message when the message should remain in the conversation with corrected wording; delete it when the message should be removed from the applicable chat view. Editing and deletion produce different outcomes.

Meta says a sent Messenger message can be edited for up to 15 minutes after sending. Other participants can view the edit history, and each message can be edited up to 5 times. After the 15-minute editing period, the message can still be deleted, subject to the deletion choices Messenger provides. See Meta’s official Messenger editing guidance for the current feature details.

Goal Use Important consequence
Correct a typo or minor factual mistake Edit The revised message stays in the chat, and other participants may view its edit history
Remove the message from other participants’ normal chat views Delete for everyone The message may already have been seen, copied, captured, or remembered
Hide only your own copy Delete for you Other participants can still see their copies

Does deleting a Messenger chat delete the message for the other person?

No. Deleting a Messenger chat removes the conversation from your own inbox, but it does not delete the other person’s copy of the conversation. Meta documents chat deletion separately from message deletion in its Facebook Help Center instructions.

Use chat deletion only when you want to clear your own inbox. To retract a particular message, open that message’s options and choose Delete for everyone if Messenger provides that option.

Does archiving a Messenger conversation delete its messages?

No. Archiving hides a Messenger conversation from your chat list without deleting its message history. Archived conversations can remain available in Messenger, so archiving is an inbox-organizing action rather than a message-removal action. Meta explains the distinction in its official archiving guidance.

What happens if the deleted message contained forwarded content?

Deleting a Messenger message that forwards a Facebook post or other content does not delete the original post or content. The deletion applies to the message sent in the conversation, not to the source item that was forwarded.

What should you do immediately after sending the wrong message?

Open the individual sent message as soon as possible, choose Delete, and select Delete for everyone if that is the intended result. Acting quickly may reduce the chance that the recipient sees the message, but no deletion method guarantees that the message was never viewed.

After deletion, remember that forwarded originals, screenshots, copied text, previously viewed notifications, and a recipient’s memory are outside Messenger’s message-removal control. If the message contains sensitive information, consider what other accounts, files, links, or credentials may also need protection rather than relying on Messenger deletion alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can someone still see a Messenger message after you delete it?

Does deleting a Messenger chat delete it for the other person?

No. Deleting a Messenger chat removes the conversation from your own inbox only. The other participant’s copy remains; use the individual message’s Delete for everyone option when that option is available.

What is the difference between Delete for everyone and Delete for you on Messenger?

Delete for you removes the message only from your view, while Delete for everyone removes it from the other participants’ normal chat views. Messenger may display Remove or Unsend in some versions, but check the resulting choice carefully.

Can you edit a Messenger message instead of deleting it?

Yes. Meta says a sent Messenger message can be edited for up to 15 minutes, and other participants may view the edit history. Each message can be edited up to 5 times.

The Bottom Line

To remove a sent Messenger message from the other participants’ normal chat views, open the individual message, choose Delete, and select Delete for everyone. Delete for you, deleting the whole chat, and archiving affect only your own view or inbox. Deletion cannot undo a message that someone already saw, copied, or captured.
