There is no single international rule for gold or diamond jewellery. Check the customs requirements for every country you leave, enter, transit and return to: rules can depend on the item’s form, value, whether it is already yours or newly acquired, and whether it is personal or commercial. Declare it whenever the relevant authority requires it, and keep ownership or purchase records accessible.

First identify what you are carrying

Customs may treat a ring you have owned for years differently from a ring bought abroad, a gift, a gold bar or jewellery carried in quantity for business. Do not assume that wearing an item makes it exempt, or that a rule for gold automatically covers diamond jewellery.

  • Existing personal jewellery: It is already yours, but a country may still require a declaration or proof that you had it before travelling. This can matter when you return with it.
  • Newly purchased jewellery or a gift: It may count as goods acquired abroad and be subject to the destination’s allowance, declaration and tax rules.
  • Worn versus packed: Some customs rules distinguish bona fide personal worn jewellery from other items. Do not assume that treatment applies to unworn pieces.
  • Finished jewellery versus bullion or other gold products: Authorities may ask about gold products separately from general goods or personal effects.
  • Personal versus commercial quantity: Multiple pieces or goods carried for resale can require procedures beyond passenger allowances.

For diamond jewellery, check the rules for jewellery, precious stones and goods acquired abroad. Do not apply a gold-specific threshold to diamonds unless that country’s guidance says it covers them.

Check each leg of the itinerary

Look at both departure and arrival requirements, including any transit country and your return destination. A declaration made on one leg does not automatically satisfy another country’s rules. Use the official customs authority for each country and check the current form or declaration channel before travelling.

  1. List the countries where you will enter or leave customs control. Include your departure country, destination, transit stops where customs procedures apply, and return country.
  2. For each country, find the rule that matches the item. Check whether it concerns personal effects, newly acquired goods, gold products, precious metals or stones, cash and valuables, or commercial imports.
  3. Check both value and other conditions. A threshold may apply only to a named category, direction of travel, purity, weight, or type of goods.
  4. Use the required declaration form or channel and answer its questions accurately. If the instructions are unclear for your item, ask the customs authority before departure.
  5. Keep records available for inspection. Carry receipts or other existing ownership documents in an accessible place rather than packed in checked luggage.

What official country guidance illustrates

These examples show why one country’s rule cannot be treated as a worldwide jewellery allowance. Confirm the current instructions for your own itinerary.

Country or authority Published rule relevant to travellers What to take from it
Japan Customs Arriving passengers declare their belongings. The accompanied/unaccompanied articles form asks about gold bullion or gold products regardless of quantity, weight, value, or whether new or used. Separately, more than 1 kg of bullion at 90% or greater purity triggers an additional means-of-payment declaration. Gold beyond passenger-baggage clearance may require general import procedures. Do not treat the bullion threshold as an exemption from the gold-product question. The form question and the additional declaration are separate requirements.
Korea Customs High-priced articles, including jewellery and precious metals, should be declared before departure when they will be brought back into Korea. Items not declared may be subject to duties on return. Non-personal precious metals such as gold bars require a formal export declaration. A departure record may help establish that valuable jewellery was already yours before the return leg. Gold bars and other non-personal precious metals are not the same case as personal jewellery.
French Directorate General of Customs and Indirect Taxes Money, coins and gold above €10,000 must be declared when entering or leaving French territory. This is distinct from the rules for goods brought back from a trip, which may require declaration and duties or taxes above applicable thresholds. The guidance page was updated 2026-06-30. Do not read the €10,000 figure as a universal jewellery-value threshold. Check the separate rules for goods acquired abroad.
Dubai Customs / UAE Dubai Customs’ 2025 Services Guide says passengers must declare goods over AED 3,000; under that guide, personal belongings below AED 3,000 do not require declaration. It also says imported goods’ value should be declared with a supporting invoice. This is guidance from the 2025 Dubai guide, not a worldwide threshold. Verify the current requirement for your trip.
Sri Lanka Customs Bona fide personal worn jewellery, as determined by the Director General of Customs, is not subject to customs taxation. Other jewellery should be declared on arrival. Gold in forms other than bona fide personal jewellery requires declaration and a valid import control licence before arrival. The personal-worn treatment is specific and does not establish an exemption for unworn, newly purchased or bullion gold.
General Authority of Customs of Qatar On entry or exit, a declaration is required for cash, precious jewellery, precious metals or precious stones worth QAR 50,000 or more, or the equivalent. This threshold is stated in the authority’s guidance retrieved in 2026. The published rule expressly covers jewellery, metals and stones and applies in both directions of travel.

Keep evidence for jewellery you already own

For an item you plan to bring home, records can help explain its value and when you acquired it. France’s guidance says travellers should be able to present an invoice or receipt at a customs check involving goods brought back. Dubai Customs’ 2025 guide says an import declaration should include the goods’ value supported by an invoice.

Do not confuse declaration thresholds

A value threshold can refer to very different things: a requirement to declare cash or valuables, a passenger allowance for goods brought into a country, or a separate procedure for bullion. For example, France’s €10,000 rule concerns money, coins and gold, while its rules for goods brought back from abroad are a separate question. Japan’s additional declaration trigger is specifically more than 1 kg of bullion at 90% or greater purity, while Japan also asks arriving travellers about gold bullion or products of gold regardless of quantity, weight or value.

Likewise, a country’s treatment of bona fide worn personal jewellery does not establish how it treats unworn items, purchases, gifts, bullion or commercial quantities. Match the item and trip to the wording of the applicable customs guidance rather than relying on a threshold heard from another traveller.

When ordinary passenger procedures may not be enough

High-value goods or non-personal quantities may require more than answering a passenger declaration form. Japan Customs says gold beyond passenger-baggage clearance may need general import procedures. Korea Customs says non-personal precious metals such as gold bars require a formal export declaration. Sri Lanka Customs requires a valid import control licence before arrival for gold in forms other than bona fide personal jewellery. For such cases, seek instructions from the relevant customs authority before carrying the item.
