Buy a new Pokémon game at launch if playing immediately, joining friends, or avoiding spoilers matters more to you than having a fuller picture before you pay. Wait for reviews if you want independent reporting on performance, content, difficulty, or whether a major gameplay change suits you. If you are torn, read reviews after release and buy then if they answer your questions.

Choose launch day if playing right away is part of the appeal

A launch purchase makes sense when the timing itself matters to you. You may want to start as soon as the game becomes available, play alongside friends or community events, or avoid story spoilers that can spread quickly after release. These are personal priorities, not guarantees that a launch purchase will be better value or that a game will sell out.

Before buying, check the official gameplay footage and descriptions. If the announced mechanics already sound appealing, you may feel comfortable accepting some uncertainty about how the finished game performs or how much content it offers.

Wait for reviews if you need specific answers first

Reviews can help with questions that official trailers and product pages do not settle: how the game runs on the hardware you own, how much content it contains, how difficult it is, whether technical problems affect play, and how a substantial change to the formula feels in practice.

#1 Best Overall
Pokémon Pokopia - Nintendo Switch 2
  • Shape the world and build a cozy new life with Pokémon as a Ditto transformed to look like a human.
  • Use other Pokémon’s moves, like Bulbasaur’s Leafage, to revitalize and navigate the world around you.
  • Meet and befriend more Pokémon as you help nature flourish.
  • Gather materials to create items and furniture, till the fields to grow delicious crops, build homes for the Pokémon you meet, and more—there’s so much to do!
  • Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.

Do not rely on a score alone. Check what the reviewer actually played and whether the coverage addresses your priorities.

  • Platform and edition: Confirm whether the review covers your console and the same edition you are considering.
  • Review date: Check when it was published; early reviews may have limited access to online features or may not reflect later updates.
  • Relevant criteria: Look for discussion of the mechanics, difficulty, performance, content, or edition differences that matter to you.
  • Reviewer perspective: A reviewer who prefers classic turn-based battles may judge a new combat system differently from a player looking for a fresh approach.

A review is useful evidence about a reviewer’s experience, not a guarantee that you will have the same one.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus - US Version
  • Action meets RPG in this new take on the Pokémon series
  • Study Pokémon behaviors, sneak up on them, and toss a well-aimed Poké Ball to catch them
  • Unleash moves in the speedy agile style or the powerful strong style in battles
  • Travel to the Hisui region—the Sinnoh of old—and build the region’s first Pokédex
  • Learn about the Mythical Pokémon Arceus, the key to this mysterious tale

Use Pokémon Legends: Z-A as an example of what to verify

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is already available, so it is an example of how to assess a release—not an upcoming game to preorder. The official Pokémon Legends: Z-A updates page announced on September 30, 2026, that a bundle including the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and Mega Dimension DLC will release on October 29, 2026.

Check whether the gameplay suits you

Official Nintendo and Pokémon materials describe Z-A’s battles as real-time: Trainers and Pokémon move during battle, and players consider move timing and area of effect. That is a meaningful change for someone who specifically wants the classic turn-based format. The Pokémon Company’s official press release describes the mechanics; watching or reading about them can help you decide whether you want to try them, while reviews can offer another perspective on how they play.

Pokémon FireRed Version Standard - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • Set off on a grand adventure to become the Pokémon League Champion—now on Nintendo Switch!
  • Celebrate 30 years of Pokémon with this Nintendo Switch version* of the Pokémon FireRed Version game originally released on the Game Boy Advance system!
  • Additional games and systems required for multiplayer mode. Sold separately. 2004 Pokémon. 1995-2004 Nintendo/Creatures Inc./GAME FREAK inc. Pokémon and Nintendo Switch are trademarks of Nintendo.

Match the review to the edition

Nintendo says the Switch 2 Edition offers improved performance, enhanced resolution, and smoother frame rates. These are official product claims, not independent comparative test results. A review of one version should not be treated as a test of another: for example, Hamish Hector’s TechRadar review covered the Switch 2 version in October 2025.

Compare what the listing includes

Nintendo’s Switch 2 Edition listing says Mega Dimension DLC is sold separately and requires the full game. The announced bundle combines the Switch 2 Edition and DLC, so compare the contents of the product you are considering rather than assuming every listing includes the same things.

Pokemon Shining Pearl - Nintendo Switch Shining Pearl Edition
  • Revisit the Sinnoh region from the original Pokémon Pearl Version game and set off to try and become the Champion of the Pokémon League
  • The Pokémon Shining Pearl game brings new life to this remade classic with added features
  • Explore the Grand Underground to dig up items and Pokémon Fossils, build a Secret Base, and more.
  • Test your style and rhythm in a Super Contest Show
  • A reimagined adventure, now for the Nintendo Switch system

Hector reported 25 hours of play and said he had not reached the credits when writing. He described the game as a fresh but recognizable mix, while identifying limited difficulty and a preference for classic Pokémon as possible reasons it might not suit some players. He also noted that online functionality was unavailable to test. Those are the views and conditions of this particular early review, not a consensus or a prediction about a future Pokémon game.

If you preorder digitally, know the cancellation cutoff

Nintendo’s preorder rules below apply to eligible Nintendo eShop digital preorders under its US support policy. They do not establish the terms for physical retailer orders, other countries, or other platforms.

  1. Payment timing: Nintendo says payment is processed no sooner than seven days before release.
  2. Cancellation window: You can cancel until payment is processed and the game is preloaded. This cutoff may arrive before reviews are available, so a preorder does not guarantee you can wait for reviews and still cancel.
  3. Preload and launch: Preloading downloads the full content; a small update may be needed at release. Preloaded software cannot be launched before release, and any required unlock update must be downloaded.
  4. Payment failure: A failed preorder payment can cancel the preorder.

See Nintendo’s US eShop Pre-Order and Pre-Load FAQ for the policy, and check the current terms that apply to your location and purchase.

A quick way to make the decision

  • Buy at launch if immediate access, shared play, or avoiding spoilers is worth the uncertainty for you, and the announced gameplay already appeals.
  • Wait for reviews if performance on your hardware, content, difficulty, technical issues, or a new mechanic could change your decision.
  • Take the middle course if neither timing clearly wins: wait until release, look for reviews that address your questions, then buy if the evidence makes the game feel like a good fit.
