For layout issues, use Responsive Design Mode; for a problem that only occurs on an iPhone or iPad, inspect the eligible page or app from your Mac. Safari’s Web Inspector is built in and is designed to inspect and debug HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
Enable the Develop menu and open Web Inspector
Safari hides its developer tools until you enable the developer features. The exact settings label or location can differ by Safari release, so if the path below does not match your version, look in Safari Settings or Preferences for the advanced or developer options, or consult Safari Help.
- Open Safari settings or preferences and enable features for web developers. Apple’s Develop menu documentation explains the setting for supported releases.
- Confirm that Develop appears in Safari’s menu bar.
- Open the page you want to investigate, then choose Develop > Show Web Inspector. This opens the inspector at its last-used tab.
- To go directly to the JavaScript prompt, choose Develop > Show JavaScript Console.
For a page you can load in Safari on your Mac, start with Web Inspector. For responsive layout problems, add Responsive Design Mode; for content running on another device or in an app, use the device-inspection workflow below.
Choose the panel that matches the problem
Apple documents Elements, Console, Sources, Network, Timelines, Storage, Graphics, Layers, and Audit in Web Inspector. Begin with the panel that can provide evidence for the symptom, then follow that evidence to the relevant page resource or code.

Storage, Graphics, Layers, and Audit are available for more specialized investigations. Use them when the problem calls for those views rather than treating every panel as a required step. Apple’s Web Inspector guide describes the available panels and their roles.
Debug a layout at the viewport where it fails
Responsive Design Mode lets you vary the viewport size and display pixel ratio. Use it to reproduce a breakpoint or density-related issue while keeping Web Inspector available to examine the affected element and its styles.

- Choose Develop > Enter Responsive Design Mode. Apple documents Control-Command-R as a shortcut; check Safari Help if it does not work with your keyboard or installed release.
- Set the width and height where the defect appears, including the narrow or short dimensions that trigger it.
- Account for the display pixel ratio when diagnosing a high-density display issue.
- With Web Inspector open, select the affected element and inspect its rendered structure and styles as you change the viewport.
- When the issue depends on device-specific behavior, verify it on the actual target device as well. Responsive Design Mode is a diagnostic preview, not a substitute for every real-device check.

Inspect a website on an iPhone or iPad from a Mac
Safari can expose eligible content from connected devices, simulators, and apps for inspection. What appears depends on the device, operating system, app, and configuration; a target that is not eligible or configured will not necessarily appear in the Develop menu.

- On the Mac, open Safari and choose Develop > Inspect Apps and Devices.
- Make the target content available: open the page in Safari on the device, run the relevant app or simulator, and connect or configure the target as needed.
- Select the eligible page or app content shown in the menu to inspect it in Web Inspector.
- If using a wired-paired device, Apple documents configuring network connection when the device and Mac are on the same network.
Service workers are listed separately because they are shared across webpages. Apple’s Inspect Apps and Devices documentation and Develop menu guide describe supported targets and configuration. For automated Safari testing rather than interactive diagnosis, Apple documents WebDriver as a separate route in its Safari Developer Features overview.

Troubleshoot when the tools or target do not appear
- Develop is missing: enable Safari’s web-developer features in settings or preferences, then check the menu bar again. The settings label can vary by release.
- The shortcut does nothing: use the menu path Develop > Enter Responsive Design Mode. The documented Control-Command-R shortcut may vary with the installed Safari release or keyboard configuration.
- The device or app is absent from Inspect Apps and Devices: confirm the target is eligible, running, connected, and configured for inspection. Device, OS, and app settings affect availability; for a network-configured wired-paired device, the Mac and device must be on the same network.
- A request appears to fail: examine it in Network, including status, response, and timing, before changing application code. A missing asset and a script error are different failure paths.
- A temporary style fix disappears: edits in Elements are diagnostic changes, not edits saved to the site’s source. Make the lasting change in the project’s CSS or other source and reload to verify it.
- A performance recording does not explain the slowdown: compare the recorded requests, script activity, layout, rendering, and memory work against the observed symptom. Do not treat a single spike or visual cue as a proven cause.
