Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →When a Playwright screenshot snapshot fails, first inspect the expected, actual, and diff images, then reproduce the test in the environment that created the baseline. Next, control the page state and only adjust comparison tolerances if the remaining differences are understood. Update a baseline only when you have reviewed the image and confirmed the visual change is intentional.
Start with the failure images
Playwright provides expected, actual, and diff images for a failed screenshot assertion. Open all three before changing settings or regenerating a snapshot. Find the affected region and note the shape of the mismatch: a broad shift may point toward layout or viewport differences; text changes may involve fonts or rendering; thin edge differences may be antialiasing; and missing or moving content may reflect assets or page state. These patterns are clues, not proof of a particular cause.
Confirm the failure against the rendered page and the test inputs. A difference image tells you where pixels disagree, but not whether the page is wrong, the test is unstable, or the baseline is stale.
Reproduce the baseline’s rendering environment
Playwright cautions that screenshot output can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. For repeatable comparisons, run in the same environment that produced the accepted baseline. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.

Compare the failing run with the baseline context, including:
- Operating system and installed fonts.
- Browser engine and version, plus the Playwright version.
- Project configuration and whether the test runs headed or headless.
- Viewport, device scale, and other screenshot options.
- The snapshot name and the project that selected it.
Generated snapshot names include browser and platform information, or a configured project name. Different engines or platforms can have different text rendering and other pixel-level behavior, so teams that deliberately test multiple targets may need distinct baselines for each. Make sure the failing run is selecting the intended snapshot rather than comparing against a baseline from another execution context.
Keep CI and local runs aligned
Use a consistent CI image for visual tests where practical. If local output differs from CI, first reproduce the CI operating system, browser, fonts, project settings, and capture dimensions before treating the output as an application regression. If each platform is an intentional target, review and maintain its expected rendering separately.

Make the page state deterministic
toHaveScreenshot() waits for two consecutive page screenshots to match before comparing the final capture with the expectation. This helps with transient rendering, but it does not make changing application data deterministic. A clock, randomized content, live API response, rotating banner, or animation can still produce a different settled image on another run. The behavior is described in Playwright’s PageAssertions API.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Wait for the intended UI state. Ensure required data and assets are ready before the assertion, rather than relying on an arbitrary short delay.
- Fix changing inputs. Use deterministic fixtures or stub changing network responses when that fits the test’s purpose.
- Handle animation deliberately. Disable or finish animation when the test is not intended to verify it; consult the screenshot API’s animation option for the exact behavior in your Playwright version.
- Control the pointer. Hover effects visible at capture time are included. Move the mouse away from hover-sensitive elements or deliberately establish the hover state the test is meant to cover.
- Normalize only irrelevant variation. Playwright’s screenshot
stylePathoption applies a stylesheet during capture and can filter dynamic content. Do not hide a component or state the test exists to protect. - Check capture details. If the mismatch is a caret or a size discrepancy, inspect the screenshot options for caret handling and CSS-pixel versus device-pixel capture behavior.
Adjust comparison tolerance only after stabilizing inputs
Playwright Test uses pixelmatch for visual comparison. The screenshot assertion API’s threshold controls the accepted perceived color difference for corresponding pixels, using a YIQ color-space measure. The documented default is 0.2. The maxDiffPixels and maxDiffPixelRatio options instead limit the number or share of pixels allowed to differ. These options can be set on an assertion or in test configuration; see SnapshotAssertions.
Choose the narrowest tolerance that fits the test. A small tolerance may be reasonable when the environment is fixed and the remaining edge differences are understood. A large tolerance can let a meaningful visual regression pass. If a project uses a non-default threshold or pixel limit, document why so maintainers can distinguish a deliberate choice from accidental weakening.
Decide whether the image reflects an intended change
If the actual screenshot shows a defect, correct the application or test setup and rerun the assertion. If the UI change is intentional, review the resulting screenshot and update the expectation with:

npx playwright test --update-snapshots
Review and commit the changed snapshot files with the related code change. Do not regenerate expectations merely to silence a failure; the new image becomes the standard future runs are checked against.
Use these checks to narrow the cause
| What to compare | Why it matters | Useful next check |
|---|---|---|
| Browser engine and version | Different renderers can produce different pixels. | Confirm the same browser project and version generated the baseline. |
| Operating system and fonts | Text metrics and rasterization can vary. | Reproduce the baseline host and installed fonts. |
| Project, viewport, and device scale | The selected target and capture dimensions affect the image. | Check snapshot naming, project selection, and screenshot dimensions. |
| Execution mode and settings | Headed/headless mode and related settings can affect rendering. | Align the test run with the baseline’s mode and configuration. |
| Page state | Live data, animation, and pointer state can change between captures. | Use fixed inputs and establish the intended UI state before capture. |
| Assertion strictness | Per-pixel color sensitivity and aggregate pixel limits control different aspects of comparison. | Inspect threshold and pixel-count or ratio limits after fixing instability. |
| Baseline provenance | An unexplained expectation can conceal an unintended visual change. | Review who accepted it, the environment used, and whether the source change was intentional. |
Troubleshoot common mismatch patterns
Many elements shifted or the whole page differs
Check whether the expected project, viewport, device scale, browser, and operating system match the baseline context. Then inspect page readiness and any changing layout inputs. Avoid raising the pixel tolerance to mask a broad layout change.
Text differs while surrounding layout looks close
Check the installed fonts, operating system, browser version, and device scale. Text metrics and rasterization can vary across environments; reproduce the baseline environment before deciding that the change is harmless.

Only small edges or antialiased boundaries differ
First verify that the environment and page state are stable. If the remaining pixel variation is understood and immaterial to the test, consider a narrowly increased threshold or a small aggregate pixel allowance. Record the reason for the chosen tolerance.
Content appears, disappears, or moves between runs
Look for live API data, clocks, randomized content, rotating banners, or animations. Control the data and state, wait for required assets, and decide whether dynamic regions are in scope. Use screenshot styling only to normalize content the test is not meant to validate.
The wrong snapshot seems to be compared
Inspect the generated snapshot name and project selection. Browser/platform context or a configured project name forms part of the naming context, so a run targeting a different project may use a different expectation.
The test passes after tolerance is raised, but the diff still looks concerning
A passing assertion only means the configured comparison limits were met. Revisit the actual image and the assertion’s purpose; restore stricter limits if the setting could permit the regression you want to detect.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a passing screenshot assertion prove that every visual detail is correct?
No. It means the rendered image met the comparison settings for that assertion; inspect the image when a tolerance could conceal a meaningful change.
Can I use one snapshot for every browser and operating system?
Not necessarily. Rendering can differ by browser and platform, and Playwright’s snapshot naming includes browser/platform or project context.
