Set a breakpoint immediately before the Selenium command or assertion you need to investigate, run the test in your IDE’s debug mode, and inspect the suspended test and browser state. A breakpoint helps reveal what happened at the failure boundary; it does not fix timing problems. If the test passes only when paused, investigate synchronization and rerun it without depending on the pause.
Set a breakpoint and step through the test
- Open the Selenium test in an IDE that supports your project’s programming language and test runner.
- Set a breakpoint on an executable line immediately before—or at—the WebDriver action or assertion you are investigating. Choose a line where the inputs and relevant state have not yet changed.
- Start the test with the IDE’s debug command, not its regular run command. The test should stop when it reaches the breakpoint.
- Inspect local variables, the call stack, the current test step, and the browser. Step over a WebDriver command to see what happens next; step into a helper or application method if its implementation matters; resume to continue execution.
- Identify the last command that completed and the next one that failed. Check the locator, the element’s presence and visibility, the active page or frame, and the values passed to the command.
Controls and menu names differ by IDE and language. JetBrains documents the breakpoint-and-debug-session workflow for Selenium tests in IntelliJ IDEA: Selenium support in IntelliJ IDEA. Selenium lists IDE options but does not prescribe one universal debugger: Selenium documentation.
Use the breakpoint to investigate timing
A browser application and its test can get out of sync: a test may issue a command before JavaScript has finished updating the page or before a dynamic element is ready. Selenium’s troubleshooting guidance calls poor synchronization its most common Selenium-related error source: Troubleshooting.
Navigation waiting for a page-load readyState does not guarantee that later JavaScript-driven changes are finished or that a particular element is present and displayed. This matters after actions that add elements or reveal hidden controls. When stopped, check what state the next command actually requires rather than assuming that the page’s initial load means the interaction is ready.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Wait for the condition the next action needs
Use an explicit wait for a specific condition, such as an element being present or visible. Explicit waits poll a condition until it succeeds or the timeout expires. Review the condition, timeout, and any ignored exceptions; a wait for presence alone does not establish visibility. See Selenium’s Waiting Strategies.
An implicit wait applies to element-location operations across the session; an explicit wait targets a particular condition. Selenium warns that combining them can make elapsed timeout behavior unpredictable, so keep the strategy clear rather than layering both types.

A fixed sleep can be a short-lived diagnostic experiment: if allowing more time changes the symptom, timing deserves investigation. It is brittle as a permanent fix because the necessary delay can vary. Replace it with a wait for the application state the next command depends on.
When a breakpoint changes the outcome
Debugger pauses change timing. If a flaky test succeeds only while paused, that is a clue to investigate synchronization, not evidence that the underlying test is fixed. Remove the breakpoint or run the test normally after changing the wait, then check whether the failure recurs. A breakpoint exposes execution state; it does not make browser behavior deterministic.

Separate test, browser, and driver problems
Compare browser behavior
If the same WebDriver operation behaves differently between browsers, compare that operation in multiple browsers. The comparison can help determine whether the issue is specific to the test or associated with a browser or driver. It does not, by itself, prove the cause.
Turn on Selenium diagnostic logging
When you need command-level detail, enable Selenium diagnostic logging using the configuration for your language binding. Selenium’s logging guide identifies Java FINE and Python DEBUG as levels for detailed debugging information: Logging. Configuration differs by binding, so use the corresponding instructions rather than assuming one setting works in every project.

Choose interactive debugging or unattended diagnostics
An IDE debug session is useful when you can reproduce a failure locally and inspect variables and browser state interactively. When a failure happens unattended or is difficult to reproduce, logs and explicit diagnostic output are more practical ways to capture evidence. These are complementary approaches, not a measured comparison: Selenium documents IDE and test-runner use as well as logging, but there is no universal IDE-versus-CI winner.
