Nesting measures does not suspend DAX filter-context rules. When an outer and inner CALCULATE apply ordinary filters to the same column, the inner filter can replace the outer one. To diagnose the result, compare the exact columns each calculation filters, then decide whether the logic should replace, intersect, or remove those filters.
Why a nested measure can change the outer filter
Microsoft Learn explains that when the columns or tables being filtered are already in the filter context, CALCULATE overwrites those existing filters with its new filters to evaluate the expression. A referenced measure can contain its own CALCULATE, so the relevant filters may be inside the measure rather than visible at the point where you call it. Nesting does not make the inner calculation inherit every same-column condition as an additional restriction.
For example, the following schematic measures apply an ordinary filter to the same column:
-- Illustrative only: an ordinary filter can replace a prior filter on this column
Measure With Replacement =
CALCULATE ( [Base Measure], 'Product'[Color] = "Blue" )
If an outer calculation or the report context already filters 'Product'[Color], the Blue condition can take precedence for this evaluation. That may be correct when the inner measure is intended to force Blue, but not when it should further narrow the existing selection.

Trace the filters before changing the measure
- Find every relevant
CALCULATE. Include calls inside measures referenced by the formula, not just the outer expression. - List each filter argument by table and column. Mark filters that target the same column, and note any table-level filters.
- Record the report context. Include filters from the visual, slicers, and other relevant context. In Excel, PivotTable and PivotChart slicers can affect the subset evaluated by a measure.
- State the intended rule in plain language. Should the inner condition replace the outer one, narrow it further, or ignore selected filters?
This comparison matters because the visible symptom alone does not establish which behavior is right. Related-table filters and report selections can also affect the result, so a formula cannot be judged from its nesting alone.
Choose replacement, intersection, or removal by intent
| Intended behavior | Approach | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Let the inner condition take precedence on a filtered column | Use an ordinary filter argument in CALCULATE. |
The new filter can overwrite an existing filter on the same column. |
| Require both the existing selection and the new condition | Use KEEPFILTERS around the relevant filter argument. |
The conditions intersect. If they conflict, the result can contain no matching rows. |
| Ignore selected filters intentionally | Use REMOVEFILTERS on the narrowest intended column or table. |
Filters are cleared only within the specified scope. |
| Clear a table’s context except for named columns | Consider ALLEXCEPT with the columns that must remain filtered. |
Context filters on the table are removed except for filters on those named columns. |
These options are not interchangeable fixes. Choose based on the business rule and the scope of context you intend to change. Microsoft documents filter replacement and KEEPFILTERS in CALCULATE, and describes DAX filter functions including filter-removal options. For ALLEXCEPT‘s table scope, see Microsoft Learn’s ALLEXCEPT function.

Use KEEPFILTERS when the conditions should intersect
Here is an illustrative alternative using the same example:
-- Illustrative only: intersect Blue with the existing Color filter
Measure With Intersection =
CALCULATE ( [Base Measure], KEEPFILTERS ( 'Product'[Color] = "Blue" ) )
With KEEPFILTERS, the existing filter on 'Product'[Color] and the Blue condition both constrain the evaluation. If the existing selection excludes Blue, there may be no matching rows; KEEPFILTERS does not preserve the other selection as a separate result or make conflicting conditions compatible.

Remove context only when the measure should ignore it
Use REMOVEFILTERS when the intended calculation should disregard selected filters on specified columns or tables. Keep its scope as narrow as the rule allows: clearing one column is different from clearing a whole table. ALLEXCEPT serves a different purpose: it removes context filters from a table except for those on the columns you name. Consult Microsoft’s ALLEXCEPT documentation before using it, because its table-wide scope may remove more context than a single-column change.
Validate the behavior in the problem visual
After choosing the intended behavior, check the measure in the same visual and slicer selections where the issue occurs. Test both a selection that matches the inner condition and one that conflicts with it. This helps reveal whether the calculation is replacing a filter, intersecting it, or removing context as intended. Microsoft’s guidance on filtering data in DAX formulas is also relevant when examining the active context.

Without the actual measure, model relationships, visual filters, and expected result, no exact corrected formula can be determined. A Microsoft Fabric Community thread titled “filter overwriting behavior of CALCULATE” reflects this kind of reader question; Microsoft Learn’s function documentation is the appropriate reference for the rules.
