Opening Playwright UI Mode does not create every snapshot automatically: the test containing the snapshot assertion must run. For a missing visual baseline, select and run the relevant test in UI Mode, or run npx playwright test --update-snapshots=missing. Then verify the assertion type, result, configured snapshot path, project and browser before deciding whether a file is truly missing.

First identify what kind of snapshot is missing

“Snapshot” can mean several different artifacts in Playwright. The fix depends on which assertion the test uses, so start with the assertion rather than searching the filesystem for a file named “snapshot.”

Assertion What it checks What to look for
expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() A visual screenshot of a page or element. An image baseline, normally stored in a test-specific snapshot directory. See Playwright visual comparisons.
toMatchAriaSnapshot() An accessibility-tree representation. An ARIA snapshot, not an image. Its generation and update workflow is documented under ARIA snapshots.
toMatchSnapshot() Text or another value being compared with a stored expectation. The expected value and its configured location; do not apply screenshot-only assumptions.

If the test uses a different assertion than you thought, an image-generation command may not address the problem. Confirm the assertion and the expected artifact format before continuing.

Run the test that owns the snapshot

Playwright UI Mode is an interface for exploring, selecting, running and debugging tests. Launch it with npx playwright test --ui, then select the specific test and project that contain the assertion and run that test. Merely opening the interface—or looking at a test without running it—does not execute the assertion that creates or checks its snapshot. Playwright describes the interface and its inspection features in the UI Mode documentation.

  1. From the project directory, run npx playwright test --ui.
  2. In UI Mode, choose the test containing the snapshot assertion and the intended project.
  3. Run the test. Inspect whether it passed, failed, timed out, or reported a missing expected snapshot.
  4. Open the run’s attachments and compare the expected, actual and diff images when available. Check the action timeline and metadata to confirm which test and environment ran.

UI Mode can help you inspect a run; it is not itself a command to regenerate all snapshot types. The relevant test assertion must execute.

Create missing visual baselines without refreshing everything

If the missing artifact is a visual baseline and the aim is to create only absent references, run:

npx playwright test --update-snapshots=missing

You can run that command from a terminal, or use UI Mode to inspect and run the test before updating. The explicit missing value matters: according to Playwright’s command-line documentation, a plain test run defaults to updating missing snapshots, while supplying the update flag without a value defaults to changed. The documented modes also include all and none. Check the command-line reference for the CLI behavior in the Playwright version installed in your project.

A first run with a missing visual baseline can report an error while writing the actual image. That does not necessarily mean the write failed: inspect the test result and locate the generated file. Treat the new image as a proposed reference, not as automatically approved truth. Review it against the intended UI state before committing it.

  • missing: Use when you intend to add absent references without refreshing existing ones.
  • changed: The documented default when the update flag is supplied without a value; it can update references that differ.
  • all: Refreshes every snapshot. Use only when that broad change is intended and you can review the resulting updates.
  • none: Use when snapshot updates should not be performed.

Find the expected file in the active project’s location

Visual baselines are normally stored in a directory based on the test filename, ending in -snapshots. A file name may also include browser or platform identifiers. The default is not guaranteed: a configured snapshotPathTemplate can change where Playwright writes or looks for snapshots. Check the active configuration and project if the test reports a generated image but you cannot find it where you expected.

Confirm that you are checking the snapshot directory associated with the test file that ran—not a similarly named directory for another test. Also check whether the run selected a different project than the one whose reference you expected. The TestProject reference documents project configuration, including snapshot path templates.

Use UI Mode to distinguish a missing file from a failed run

In the selected test’s result, inspect its attachments, expected/actual/diff images, action timeline and metadata. These details help answer different questions:

  • Did the assertion run? If the test never reached it, there may be no screenshot baseline to generate.
  • Did Playwright write an actual image? A missing baseline can be reported as an error even when the actual image was written.
  • Is the displayed comparison for the intended project and browser? A different selection can lead you to inspect the wrong reference.
  • Is the problem a mismatch instead of absence? If an expected image and a diff are present, investigate the rendering difference rather than treating the reference as nonexistent.

UI Mode provides evidence about the run; it cannot guarantee that every kind of snapshot has been generated. For accessibility snapshots, follow the separate ARIA snapshot workflow. Playwright documents patch files for reviewing and applying ARIA snapshot updates.

Check the rendering environment before accepting a new image

Screenshot output can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source and headless mode. A baseline created under one rendering environment may not match a run under another. Where practical, generate and compare images in the environment used to produce the reference. If the test is selecting the wrong browser or project, correct that selection before updating snapshots; otherwise, you may create a valid image for the wrong context.

Troubleshoot the common causes

The test did not execute

Symptom: UI Mode is open, but no new image appears. Cause: The test or the assertion was not run. Fix: Select the precise test and project, run it, and inspect its result and attachments.

The update mode is broader or narrower than intended

Symptom: Existing snapshots change, or an absent reference is not handled as expected. Cause: The update flag was omitted, given a different mode, or used without an explicit value. Fix: For missing visual references, use npx playwright test --update-snapshots=missing. Consult the CLI reference for the installed version before relying on defaults.

You are looking for the wrong artifact

Symptom: An image file never appears even though the test concerns a snapshot. Cause: The test may assert an ARIA tree or another value rather than a screenshot. Fix: Identify the assertion first and use the matching documentation and update workflow.

The snapshot is written somewhere else

Symptom: The test reports writing an actual image, but it is absent from the folder you checked. Cause: The test-specific -snapshots directory, project, platform naming, or configured snapshotPathTemplate differs from your assumption. Fix: Check the active config and project and inspect the locations associated with the test file.

The baseline and current run render differently

Symptom: An expected image exists, but the comparison fails. Cause: Browser, platform or other rendering-environment differences can affect output. Fix: Verify the selected project and browser, compare the UI Mode images and metadata, and use a consistent environment where practical.

Generation times out

Symptom: An ARIA snapshot operation times out before producing the expected result. Cause: Playwright waits up to the configured expect timeout for ARIA snapshot generation. Fix: Check the test’s timeout settings and adjust them if generation legitimately needs more time; see the ARIA snapshot documentation.

Review updates as code changes

A snapshot is a reference against which later test runs compare. Before committing a generated or changed reference, check that it represents the intended UI or accessibility state, and that it belongs to the right test and project. For ARIA snapshots, inspect the documented patch workflow before applying changes. This review catches accidental baseline updates that would otherwise make an unintended change appear expected.

ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API; it does not run Playwright’s snapshot assertions or replace a Playwright baseline. If your immediate need is a clean capture of a public page rather than a test reference, one GET request can return an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo website and API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
