When a shared link has the wrong title, no image, or stale text, debug the HTML response first—not the social app. Put one intentional set of Open Graph tags in the page’s <head>, use absolute canonical and image URLs, verify that a crawler can fetch them, then request a fresh scrape in the platform’s debugger. Differences between Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, Discord, X and WhatsApp usually come from their separate parsers, fallbacks or caches.
What a link preview actually reads
Open Graph (OG) metadata turns a web page into a structured object for sharing. The protocol documentation describes it this way: “The Open Graph protocol enables any web page to become a rich object in a social graph.” A crawler normally requests your URL, reads the initial HTML response, extracts metadata from the <head>, and stores the result for later shares.
That means a preview can be wrong even when the page looks correct in a browser. Client-side JavaScript may add tags too late, an image may be inaccessible to the crawler, or the platform may still be serving an older scrape.
Required Open Graph tags
Define exactly one intentional value for each required property. Keep these elements inside the document <head>:

Use absolute http or https URLs. The og:url value should identify the canonical page, while og:image should identify the actual file to fetch. Do not point both properties at a relative path or at a URL that requires a logged-in session.
Useful optional metadata
Optional properties give platforms better fallbacks and more predictable presentation:

1. Inspect the initial server response
View the server-rendered source, not only the post-JavaScript DOM. In a browser, use View Page Source and search for og:. From a shell, fetch the response and inspect the head:

If they appear only after a script runs, a crawler that does not execute that script will never see them. Server-side rendering or static generation is the dependable fix; client-side insertion alone is not.
2. Check for duplicates and malformed markup
There should be one deliberate value for each property. Remove duplicate tags emitted by a theme, SEO plugin and template at the same time. Check quotation marks, closing brackets, encoding and placement inside <head>. A tag outside the head, a misspelled property name, or an empty content attribute can make a parser ignore it.
3. Verify canonical identity
Compare the URL people share with og:url and your regular canonical link. Decide how trailing slashes, query strings, language paths and redirects should resolve, then emit that one canonical identity consistently. If og:url names another page, a platform may cache or display metadata from that page instead.
4. Test every asset as an anonymous crawler
Open the image and canonical URL without cookies or authentication. Follow redirects and check the final response. The image should return an image MIME type, not an HTML error page, login form or access-denied response. Avoid expiring signed URLs, hotlink protection that blocks social user agents, and robots or firewall rules that deny crawler requests. A file that loads in your browser is not necessarily fetchable by a social service.

5. Use the destination platform’s inspector
Run the URL through Facebook’s Object/Sharing Debugger and the relevant LinkedIn, X or other platform inspector. Record the parsed title, description, image and scrape time. These tools often expose the values the platform actually stored and provide a button or action to request a fresh fetch.
6. Compare services independently
Share the same URL to a private test location on each service and record the resulting title, description, image, crop and timestamp. If the raw HTML is correct but one service differs, treat it as that service’s parser, fallback or cache behavior rather than immediately changing valid metadata for every platform.
7. Republish and recheck
After correcting the smallest necessary set of tags, clear your site or CDN cache, request a fresh scrape in the platform tool, and test a new share. Existing posts can retain the old preview even after a successful refresh; a new post is the cleanest confirmation.

Different image rules
Services may choose different crops, aspect ratios, maximum dimensions or fallback images. Supplying width, height, MIME type and a secure URL improves their ability to select the intended asset, but it cannot force every card layout to be identical.

Different fallback order
One consumer may prefer OG description, another may use page text or a platform-specific description tag. Missing X card metadata, for example, can produce a different result from a service that reads OG only.
Independent caches
Each platform stores its own scrape. A corrected response does not invalidate an old object automatically, and a URL shared with tracking parameters may be cached as a separate identity. Use the platform debugger after publishing the fix and allow for the fact that an already published post may keep its original card.

Build a repeatable preview test
For important pages, keep a small test matrix containing the production URL, canonical URL, expected title, expected description, image URL, image MIME type and the date of the last scrape. Check the raw HTML after every template or CDN change. Then run the official inspector for each network where the page is promoted. Save screenshots of the parsed result if a team needs an audit trail, but treat the platform’s own parsed values as authoritative for that platform.

Usually not. You can refresh the platform’s stored scrape for future shares, but a post that already contains a preview may retain its original data.
Should every page use the same image?
No. Use a page-specific image when it clarifies the destination; use a consistent fallback only when a page has no suitable artwork.
