If a PDF looks wrong after conversion in Go, first check whether your code is rendering a whole page or only decoding an embedded image. Those are different operations. And if the goal is redaction, a clean-looking image is not proof that the underlying content was removed.
First identify what your code is converting
Full-page rasterization interprets a PDF page and draws its text, vector graphics, images, and other supported content into a bitmap. Image-stream decoding instead reads an image already embedded in the PDF; it does not, by itself, establish that the entire page has been rendered.
This distinction matters when characters disappear or output seems incomplete. The pdfcpu API describes RenderImage as returning a reader for a decoded image stream, not as a complete page rasterizer. By contrast, Poppler documents page rendering to a QImage in its Qt API and provides a C++ page renderer. SalvioniDigitalSolutions/gopdf documents a RenderPage method for drawing a page to an image, alongside support it describes for text, vector drawing, shadings, masks, and raster images. These are documented capabilities, not independent comparisons of fidelity. pdfcpu API, Poppler Qt API, Poppler C++ API, SalvioniDigitalSolutions/gopdf.
Poppler’s cited interfaces are C++, so using them from a Go application entails a binding or process boundary; the API pages do not settle which integration is best for a particular deployment. Choose a page renderer when you need a whole-page bitmap. Choose image decoding when you specifically need an embedded image.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Debug the conversion in a repeatable order
- Confirm the input and page. Record which PDF file and page number your code is processing. Check the page bounds and whether the source page itself contains text, vector content, an embedded image, or a mixture.
- Confirm the operation. Determine whether the function renders a whole page or decodes an image stream. If you expect text and vector graphics in the output, an embedded-image decoder alone is not the right test.
- Set geometry explicitly. For the Poppler C++ renderer, inspect x- and y-resolution, crop coordinates and dimensions, and rotation. Its API exposes these as rendering parameters; unexpected scaling, clipping, or missing regions can result from geometry choices rather than a redaction step. Poppler C++ page renderer.
- Compare with a separate renderer when possible. Render the same page with another implementation and compare page bounds, rotation, text, and visible regions. A difference narrows the problem, but does not by itself show which renderer is correct for every PDF feature.
- Inspect the final saved PDF. Reopen the artifact produced by the redaction or conversion step. Check its rendered appearance and inspect text, image, and annotation content separately. Do not use only an in-memory view or a freshly drawn black rectangle as evidence of removal.
Use four redaction signals to find what remains
These are practical diagnostic surfaces, not an official standard or a guarantee of secure redaction. Different checks reveal different kinds of residual content.
1. Text and content signal
After saving, extract text or inspect the relevant content and see whether the supposedly removed words or glyphs remain. If they do, the redaction pass has not removed at least that text representation. If they do not, that only addresses text detectable by the check; sensitive material may still exist as image pixels or elsewhere in the document.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
2. Image-pixel signal
Inspect the rendered region and any relevant embedded image data. A word baked into a scanned page can remain visible even when text extraction finds nothing. SalvioniDigitalSolutions/gopdf describes redaction as addressing pixels in images as well as glyphs in content streams, treating them as distinct targets. SalvioniDigitalSolutions/gopdf project.
3. Annotation signal
Inspect annotations independently from the rendered page. A redaction-looking annotation or other overlay can cover content without removing it. The cited gopdf project describes annotation removal as part of its redaction behavior; that project-level description is not a universal guarantee about other tools or files. SalvioniDigitalSolutions/gopdf project.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
4. Saved-document signal
Run checks against the saved file, not just the document currently open in memory. Reopen it, render it, and repeat relevant extraction and structure checks. The gopdf project describes writing a fresh file and checking it, but those checks do not establish removal of every duplicate, attachment, metadata field, or prior revision. qpdf distinguishes structural transformations and debugging or testing from the meaning and correctness of page content: a structurally valid PDF can still render incorrectly or retain sensitive content. SalvioniDigitalSolutions/gopdf project, qpdf manual.
What a passing check can—and cannot—tell you
SalvioniDigitalSolutions/gopdf reports a sweep of 4,000 documents: it says 3,986 removals succeeded, with zero silent failures and zero damaged documents. The project says it attempted to remove a word from each document and used pdftotext to check whether the word remained. The source does not state a year, and this is a project-reported test rather than independent verification. It does not establish an industry-wide success rate or prove removal from image pixels, annotations, metadata, attachments, or prior revisions. SalvioniDigitalSolutions/gopdf project.

More broadly, passing text extraction, visual, and annotation checks gives useful evidence about those inspected surfaces; it is not proof that all copies of sensitive information are gone. Structural validation can help identify malformed files, but it cannot decide whether page content is semantically correct or a redaction is complete. The four signals are a debugging aid, not a substitute for a security review of the document and the tools used.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose an approach based on the output you need
| Approach | What the cited documentation establishes | Useful when | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Poppler Qt | Documents rendering a PDF page to QImage. |
You need page rasterization and can accommodate a C++ library integration. | The cited API page does not specify a Go integration path or establish deployment and licensing trade-offs. Source. |
| Poppler C++ page renderer | Documents page rendering with resolution and optional crop and rotation parameters. | You need explicit control over output geometry. | The cited API is C++; Go integration, deployment requirements, and licensing constraints need to be assessed for your project. Source. |
pdfcpu RenderImage |
Documents a reader for a decoded image stream. | You need to work with an image embedded in a PDF. | The cited function description does not establish full-page bitmap rendering. Source. |
SalvioniDigitalSolutions/gopdf RenderPage |
The project describes drawing a page to an image and documents redaction behavior. | You want to evaluate a Go project that reports both page rendering and redaction capabilities. | Project claims and tests should be reproduced against your PDFs and checked with a separate renderer or extractor; the cited material does not establish a universal winner. Source. |
For any candidate, test the PDF features in your actual document set, the resolution and geometry controls you require, Go integration and deployment, and how you will verify the final saved artifact. A visually clean conversion is not, on its own, evidence of secure redaction.
