When go build fails on minified Go, start with the exact generated file and full diagnostic—not a new set of compiler flags. The compiler reports positions in its input unless generated code supplies Go //line directives. Those directives can make errors point to an original file and line, but they do not reconstruct minified source or fix invalid generated code.
First, preserve and reproduce the failure
Before editing the generated file or changing build options, save the exact input that failed and enough context to run the same build again. A different Go version, package selection, build tag, or target can change which files are compiled and what the error means.
- Keep the complete compiler output and the exact generated Go file.
- Record the Go version, original build command, target OS and architecture, and relevant build tags or environment.
- Include the generation step and, if available, the unminified input and the transformer’s mapping from generated text back to its source.
Run the same go build command against the same package and generated input. Read the entire diagnostic: if no source-position directive applies, its filename and line refer to the compiler’s selected input. With compact code, many expressions may share a line, so inspect the reported token and surrounding syntax rather than treating the line number as a precise explanation.
Identify which kind of failure you have
Use the diagnostic and exact input to decide where to look. Minification can make an error harder to locate; a faulty transformation can also produce genuinely invalid Go. Do not assume minification itself changed the program’s semantics.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Parse or syntax error: Inspect token boundaries and the generated syntax near the reported position. The transformation may have emitted invalid Go.
- Type-checking error: Check the names, types, and imports involved. Trace the generated expression back through the transformer’s mapping or deterministic output.
- Package or build-selection error: Confirm that the same package, files, target, and build constraints are being used. The command may be compiling a different file set than expected.
Choose how to map generated code to its source
If the transformation preserves a reliable mapping, use it to trace the failing generated token to the original input. Alternatively, if you control code generation, add Go //line directives so compiler diagnostics can report original source positions.
| Approach | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Keep a separate mapping or inspect the exact generated file | The transformation retains a deterministic mapping, or you do not control the generator. | Does not alter generated output, but locating the corresponding source depends on the mapping or generator output. |
Emit Go //line directives |
You control code generation and want diagnostics to identify original files and lines. | Requires valid directives in the right places. Useful column reporting also requires meaningful column values; directives do not restore the source text. |
Choose based on whether the generator is under your control, whether it can produce stable file-and-line mappings, whether column precision matters, and whether downstream tools can use the reported original paths.

Use //line directives correctly
Go’s compiler documentation explains that “Line directives typically appear in machine-generated code, so that compilers and debuggers will report positions in the original input to the generator.” The directive sets source positions for following code; it is not a complete source-map mechanism and does not prove a token-by-token correspondence.
Common forms include //line filename:line and //line filename:line:column. Block-comment forms such as /*line filename:line:column*/ are also recognized. Follow the syntax carefully:

- A
//linedirective must start at the beginning of a line, be followed by a space, and include a colon. - Line and column values must be valid positive integers. Invalid values produce errors.
- The compiler interprets trailing numeric fields from the right, which allows colons in filenames.
- Relative filenames are resolved relative to the directory containing the directive.
- If a directive omits the column, the reported column is unknown until another directive supplies one.
Emit each directive before the generated code it describes, and keep the filename and path policy consistent. Verify the generator’s first output line, transitions between original files, and regions where a column should be reported. Then rebuild and confirm that the reported position identifies the intended original location. For exact syntax and interpretation rules, see the Go compiler documentation.
Separate build diagnostics from debugger problems
A compiler error occurs during parsing, type-checking, or package building. Breakpoints, variable locations, and optimized stack frames are post-build debugging concerns; changing debugger-related flags will not make minified source readable or remap a build diagnostic.

The Go GDB guide documents go build -gcflags=all="-N -l" to disable optimizations that can complicate debugging. It also documents -ldflags=-w to omit DWARF debug information. The latter removes debug data; it is not a fix for build errors or a way to improve debugger visibility. See the Go GDB guide.
When the reported position still seems wrong
Reproduce the failure with the same Go toolchain, command, package selection, target, build constraints, and exact generated file before concluding that the compiler is at fault. If you are investigating compiler behavior, pass compiler flags through go build -gcflags=... and reduce the failure to a minimal example. The Go command documentation describes passing flags to the compiler with -gcflags.

Keep the original source and the generator-side mapping when several generated tokens correspond to compact output. A line directive can change the source position a diagnostic reports, but it cannot reverse minification, establish a precise correspondence on its own, or repair malformed output.
