Start by reproducing the problem, then use Chrome DevTools to connect what you see to a Console error, a failed Network request, a browser-reported issue, or recorded performance activity. This gives you a practical path from symptom to evidence; it does not, by itself, determine the right server-side fix for every site.

Start with a reproducible symptom

Before changing code, establish what is broken and when. Record the page URL, the action that triggers the problem, the browser, and whether it happens on initial load or only after an interaction. If it occurs during page load, keep DevTools open and reload the page; reloading can reveal additional browser-detected issues.

  • Describe the visible symptom precisely: for example, “the product image is missing after refresh” or “the submit button does nothing after clicking.”
  • Note whether it occurs every time or intermittently, and whether it is limited to one page or browser.
  • Make one change at a time during diagnosis so you can tell whether the evidence or behavior changed.

Chrome DevTools is built into Chrome and includes tools for examining network activity and troubleshooting web applications. See Chrome DevTools.

Read Console errors and warnings

Open DevTools, select Console, and reproduce the problem. Both browser and site code can produce Console messages. An error is a useful lead, not proof that it is the only cause.

  1. Find the message that appears at the same time as the failure. Note its severity and wording.
  2. Use the source link or call stack attached to the message to locate the associated code.
  3. Check whether the message appears on page load or only after a specific action.
  4. Correlate the message with Network activity before deciding on a fix; a script error may be downstream of a failed resource or response.

Chrome’s guidance describes Console messages, their severity, and how source links and call stacks help locate associated code: Browser errors logged to the console.

Inspect failed or slow requests in Network

Select Network in DevTools and reload the page or repeat the action. The panel records page network activity and lets you inspect response codes and resource details. Look for the request associated with the missing image, script, stylesheet, or API response, then compare its status and loading details with the visible symptom and Console message.

  • Request appears slow: inspect its loading details and compare it with other page activity. A slow request may be one part of a broader performance problem.
  • API response differs from expectations: record the request and response details available in DevTools, then follow the evidence into the code or service that owns that response.

Chrome’s guide explains how to inspect page network activity and resources: Inspect network activity.

Use Issues for browser-detected problems

Open the Issues panel and expand any reported item. Read the explanation and follow links to affected resources instead of treating a warning as a generic failure. Documented issue families include cookies, mixed content, CORS, stylesheet loading, and Content Security Policy. The exact issues shown can vary as Chrome’s supported detections evolve.

Lighthouse A broad audit and a baseline for a page Review the audit findings and use a repeatable run to evaluate changes.
Performance In-depth performance debugging Record a trace and inspect recorded main-thread and network activity for work associated with the delay.

Compare runs under consistent conditions, including the same page and browser state and the same throttling setup. That makes before-and-after results more useful than comparing runs made under different conditions.

  1. Run Lighthouse to establish an initial audit and baseline.
  2. If the page remains slow or the audit does not explain the delay, record a Performance trace while reproducing the slow experience.
  3. Inspect the recorded main-thread and network activity, then make a focused change.
  4. Repeat the measurements under the same conditions and compare the result with the baseline.

Chrome recommends Performance for detailed performance investigation; Lighthouse provides a broader audit. See Lighthouse: Optimize website speed and web.dev’s overview of web performance.

If your debugging task needs a shareable screenshot of the page, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. The example below saves a WebP response; consult the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

When browser evidence points beyond the browser

If DevTools shows an upstream response, missing deployed resource, or other issue that appears to belong to the server or hosting environment, carry the evidence into that system’s documentation or support workflow. Include the page URL, timestamp, request status, and relevant browser error. Browser tools can help identify where to investigate, but the correct server-side commands and remedies depend on the site’s platform and application stack.

Common troubleshooting branches

  • A JavaScript interaction fails: reproduce the action, locate the matching Console message, and follow its source link or call stack. Check whether the error is present on load or begins only after the action.
  • An image, script, stylesheet, or API response is missing: locate its request in Network and inspect the response status and resource details. For a 404, verify the requested path and the resource’s deployment or configuration.
  • The Issues panel reports a browser warning: expand the item, read its contextual explanation, and inspect the linked affected resource. Available issue categories can differ by Chrome version.
  • A page is slow but the cause is unclear: establish a Lighthouse baseline, then record a Performance trace and inspect recorded main-thread and network activity. Keep the conditions consistent when comparing changes.
  • A Lighthouse audit errors: Chrome’s Lighthouse tutorial suggests trying a clean Incognito window with no other tabs open, since extensions can interfere. This tests the audit environment; it is not itself a website fix.
  • DevTools evidence suggests a server or hosting fault: preserve the URL, timestamp, request status, and browser error, then consult documentation for the system responsible for that response. Chrome DevTools guidance does not provide platform-specific server commands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do browser DevTools catch every website problem?

No. They expose browser-visible errors, requests, issues, and recorded activity, but they do not establish the right fix for every server-side or hosting problem.

Why should I repeat a performance measurement?

A consistent baseline and follow-up run make it easier to judge whether a change affected the page, rather than differences in browser state or throttling.
