To debug a backend error, identify the affected request in structured logs, follow its trace across services, inspect the failing span, and correlate that operation with its logs and service metrics. Logs provide event details; traces show the request’s path and relationships between operations. A trace narrows the search—it does not prove the underlying cause without supporting evidence from logs, span attributes, code, or metrics.
1. Bound the incident before searching
Start with what the report or alert actually gives you: approximate time in UTC, affected route or operation, environment, response status, and any request ID or trace ID. Search a narrow time window first; widen it if telemetry ingestion may be delayed or system clocks may differ. Time and resource context help distinguish entries from the relevant service, host, or workload. See OpenTelemetry’s logging data model and Amazon CloudWatch application traces.
Keep identifiers distinct: a request ID is an application or platform identifier, while a trace ID identifies a distributed trace. Either may be useful for searching, but do not assume they are interchangeable.
2. Find the relevant log entries
Filter on the fields your application actually emits: service, route or operation, severity, status, and time. A structured JSON log exposes values as fields that a logging backend can query; a plain text message may require broad text matching and is harder to filter precisely. Field names differ between applications and platforms, so use the schema in your own telemetry rather than assuming a universal naming convention. Google Cloud’s structured logging documentation is one platform-specific example.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the report includes a trace ID, search for it in the backend’s trace or log interface. If it does not, narrow by time, route, service, status, and any available request ID, then use matching timing and attributes to identify a likely request. Treat a time-only match cautiously when several requests could fit.
3. Follow the request through its trace
A trace represents a logical request across components. Its spans represent individual operations—such as handling an incoming request, calling another service, querying a database, or processing a queue message—and parent/child relationships show how those operations relate. Follow the trace from the incoming server operation through downstream work to find where it failed, stopped, or took unexpectedly long. OpenTelemetry explains these concepts in its traces overview.

Context propagation carries trace identity between processes and across network boundaries. OpenTelemetry’s default propagator uses W3C Trace Context, including the traceparent HTTP header; the tracestate header can carry vendor-specific values. The W3C Recommendation, published 23 November 2021, defines the standard format: W3C Trace Context. Propagation is an interoperability mechanism, not a guarantee that every library, proxy, queue, or service is instrumented. Confirm that each relevant boundary passes context through.
4. Inspect the suspicious span
For the span that appears to mark the failure or delay, check the operation name, service and resource, start and end timing, status, relevant attributes, and any recorded exception or event information. An Error status means an error was recorded for that operation; it does not by itself identify the business rule, code path, or dependency that caused it. Use the span as a lead, then inspect the corresponding log entries and code context.

- Failure location: Is the first error on the incoming request, a downstream service call, database operation, or another instrumented step?
- Timing: Does one operation account for an unexpected wait, or does the delay appear across several operations?
- Context: Do service/resource attributes and operation details match the affected route and environment?
- Error evidence: Is there an exception or event, and does a matching log entry provide details the span does not?
5. Correlate logs with the trace
Direct correlation works best when logs include trace context—and, where supported, the span ID—alongside a timestamp and service/resource information. OpenTelemetry describes log correlation using TraceId, SpanId, time, and resource context in its logging data model. A trace ID links a log to the request; a span ID can associate it with a particular operation.
Backend behavior is platform-specific. For example, Google Cloud documents a trace field in its LogEntry format and conditions involving matching trace values and timestamp ordering when grouping entries. Those are Google Cloud conventions, not universal field-name rules: Google Cloud: Correlate log entries.

If a legacy system log has no trace context or uses an inconsistent format, direct linking may not be possible. Where the application cannot change the record, enrich it with resource information at collection if feasible. Time-based matching can help, but should be treated as an approximation when multiple events share the same window.

Compare the request with service metrics such as request volume, latency, and error rates around the same period. One failed span may reflect a particular input or dependency problem; a simultaneous shift in service-level metrics can indicate a wider issue. CloudWatch documents viewing metrics alongside a trace in its application traces guide. Metrics add scope and timing evidence, but still need to be interpreted alongside the request’s logs and trace.

7. When the trace or matching logs are missing
Missing correlated telemetry does not necessarily mean the request did not occur. Check the telemetry path as well as the application failure:
- Confirm emission: Verify the affected service is configured to emit the relevant logs and spans.
- Check delivery: Confirm collectors and exporters are running and delivering data to the backend.
- Revisit the time range: Allow for ingestion delay, and account for possible clock differences.
- Verify identifiers and fields: Check that the searched ID matches the emitted trace context and that log field names match the backend’s expected schema.
- Check propagation at each hop: If a trace ends at a service boundary, inspect instrumentation and context propagation in the next service or intermediary.
- Assess instrumentation coverage: A trace with only a few broad spans may not include internal operations, database work, or queue processing.
CloudWatch’s application traces documentation and Google Cloud’s log correlation guidance describe platform-specific aspects of viewing and linking telemetry.
8. Keep diagnostic logging safe
Record enough context to investigate failures, but do not put passwords, access tokens, encryption keys, database connection strings, payment details, or sensitive personal information directly into logs. Sanitize, mask, hash, or encrypt values where appropriate, and restrict access to stored telemetry. OWASP’s Logging Cheat Sheet covers security and data-handling considerations.
